  • How do u get that sounds from the track?

  • so they actually had a mandala pad in 96?

  • @APERFECTOOL1

I'm pretty sure the more expensive simmons drumpads back in the 80's could do this already. You'd be suprised what kind of electronic/midi technology they had in the late 80's.

  • Just distort the tablas

  • Doesnt the korg wave drum accomplish the same thing??

  • How much are these? And where could I buy one?

  • awesome!

  • i thought that was just something crazy they did in the studio. Thats a fucking drum pad??? I WANT ONE...HUNDRED!

  • distorted tablas

  • But... But... Adam must be involved somehow, it sounds distorted at the end... :p

  • @NoaOno Pretty sure that is Adam's feedback you hear at the end of the mandala thing and just before the riff starts.

  • @ShitMyCatsOnFire True :)

  • Yeah...yeah...pretty cool...pretty neat....;-)

  • I always wondered what that crazy sound was at the beginning of stinkfist

  • can u tell me how i can get this sound on my mandala do u download it somewhere? or do u make it yourself?

  • how do u get those to make that sound and where can i get some of those and what do you use to make those sounds?, built in stuff or computer software?

  • how do u get that sound on that kind of pad

  • how do u get that sound

  • You can just make the sounds yourself :\

They're just tablas with thick filters.

  • I thought that was a bass for the longest time. It could probably be done on bass. Just by muting the strings and certain frets and or harmonics an then slapping the muting string with overdrive and maybe an octave up. I'm gonna try that right now actually :)

  • I would think he wouldn't, considering he helped invent these things. I read about him and the scienist who created it and tested it for over 3-4 years before releasing it to the public. Very cool devices.

  • And than after that it becomes almost useless as a practical part of a drum kit, good for making little noises and stuff, its got a few tracking issues its more of a toy than anything...

  • i doubt the pros that play it would be playing it if it had any tracking issues. listen to any tool stuff, like almost every song on 10,000 Days, which uses mandalas and you'll know that danny carey definitely has no tracking errors with this technology.

  • @buddyboy2007 sure, it has nothing to do with endorsement on anyone's part...

  • @Taud depends on your creativity I guess :-)

  • Yeah totally, if you had the creativity of a 5 year old i could see it going places...

  • The problem seems to be that you can't see it going places.

  • i've always wondered how he made the fucking drum sound in reflection that sounds like its tuning up and down in the background. I thought it was a big ass pedal drum or something... NOW I KNOW!

  • wow thats cool. can u do the intension electronic drum sounds?

  • good god my drummer needs that

  • it is pretty good but the link in the description is messed up.

  • Amazing work!!!

  • fucking a!! :D

  • lol you're completely leaving out a second pattern on a completely different timing. but it does sound awfully similar..

  • Perfect copy man!!

  • jesus christ I always thought that that was a guitar effect from jones!!!

    Thats crazy!

  • yea thats what i thought too.....unless he took the sound effects from stinkfist and made them into sounds that hte mendela drum would put out.....or its the real thing

  • It could be still a guitar effect from Jones. The great thing about Mandala pads is that you can sample practically any musical note and alteration, store it, then set it up in your zones to play right off the pad.

Mandala Pads are insane, especially the 2.0, which instead of having a brain box, there is software for a computer, which acts as the brain box, and you just use a USB cable to plug the Mandala pad into your computer.

  • yea its defiinatly danny playing it on the mandala or his old simmons pads, but i agree the mandala pads are fuckin insanly amazing

  • when you do that, where does the sound come from

  • Speakers? Not sure what you're asking ToOiOGT22. The Mandala Pad, the 2.0 version, uses computer software instead of an independant brain box (seen in some of the older videos around the site), but both serve as the same function as a receiver/amplifier/etc. Obviously, all sound comes from the compression of air to create a wave, which is created by the speakers, which receives it's signal form the software, which is interpreting the location from the strike of the drumstick, which you hold.

  • same

  • nah he just does the feedback :]

  • @bobbieholbrook i think the last one it's a natural harmonic from the guitar

  • @bobbieholbrook haha I did too. Either a guitar or bass. Carzy when he hits the first note on the upbeat it plays the bass note.

  • Were they your samples (ie: did you record them or make them on a synth or something)? Or did you take them from the actual Tool tune? Just curious that was a real nice job, and I'm toying with getting a Mandala...

  • fucking awesome! i want one so bad...

im not even a drummer, lol!

it would be great to have a Mandala Pad set up on a stand next to my bass rig. or to just have on stage for other band mates to jam on throughout the set. i could really rip it up with one of these.

  • holy shit that was amazing! always wondered how he got that sound...

  • hell yeah! that was cool!!

  • thats sick how do you change the sounds like that while you are playing?

  • theres different sounds, its depends on where you hit it. you see that he hits it in different spots for each of the sounds

  • lucky guy, i want that purple mandala

  • wtf is this thing its sic...its also really expensive from what i gather thru the comments

  • it called a Mandala Drum Pad.

Google it. your right, this this is SIC!

  • lol AHHHH!!!!

  • Hey! That was awsome! Can you upload the samples and share them with us?

  • hell yeah!! that'll be niiice! xD

  • BAS ASS!

  • you are pro at life!!

  • agreed.

  • how much are these?

  • either 1000 or 3000 i think, one or the other

  • they're 300 bucks

  • the model 1s with a brain and pad is $999, but this is the USB version so it's only 350 and comes with a virtual brain instead of an actual box.

  • FHUCK!

  • where do you get one of those?

  • Im kinda new at this, is there a specific program he uses to synthesize?

  • He uses Native Instruments Battery and about 6 of the mandalas, a sequencer..etc..etc. Go to his own site, his kit is sickening.

  • I'm curious to know where Danny Carey get's his Mandala samples from. Are they already preset into the mandala or does he get them from somewhere else? Because the stinkfist intro is pretty fucking sick.

  • he maight synthesize them himself.

  • I think the stinkfist intro was originally tabla and a talking drum that had been distorted. I would guess he makes most of the samples himself.

  • Awesome. How many zones did you have the sounds assigned to?

I just got my Mandala not too long ago and haven't quite yet played with custom sounds just yet...

  • Its 4 zones

  • lol love the APC poster in the background.

  • Whaaaaaat! Thats SO COOL!

  • For sampling would you Logic or Pro Tools?

  • Both would probably work. I used Sony Soundforge.

  • awesome I want one of those

  • LOOOOOL. Atta Boy. Fuckin' Classy.

  • HOLLY MOLLY!!

  • so this is the USB version that cost 350 and not 1000$ right? (as i read the info once again) yessss it is.....DAMN NICE i want me one! i thought they were all going for like 1k!

  • dam that mandala drum is fucking sick

  • holy crap

  • thats awesome man, were do you get those samples and how do you get them no to the mandala program? id like to know how

  • I just ordered a mandala 2.0 and am wondering after watching a multitude of videos, is there any lag time from contact on the drum to response time through speakers? and if so, is there a calibration adjustment feature included in the software?

  • there is a definate lag between contact and sound, basically you need a good soundcard to run it through, I'm not sure of others but I use an Audigy F800 and in the mandala software, if you go into audio/pad setup and click on devices there's a list on which you can change the latency (lag) the standard setting is 50, i use 10, it has pretty much no lag and keeps sound quality

  • Thanks a lot man, was exactly what i was hoping for. How long did it take yours to arrive in the mail? It's been more than a week now and i'm getting itchy as hell.

  • Is there a definite lag in the original version, the one with the brain? Or is the lag there b/c youre using a computer?

  • haha you have a long wait ahead of you =P

at least i did, got to the UK in about 5 weeks i think.

  • Took me 3 and a half weeks but i got it finally. I bought an external audio interface to compensate for the lag and tweek'd it. It sounds absolutely awesome, the possibilities for samples are infinite. I love this toy.

  • lol, check the date's before you post man, i've had mine for months now. Although it's already losing it's sensitivity and i've barely used it at all, gonna have to contact synthestasia co.

  • Where did you guys get yours? They're not on musiciansfriend anymore and I don't know what other site has them.

  • Uhhh...Google "Mandala Drum". It's the first site that is listed...

  • thats badass. except mandalas are like a thousand fucking dollars.

  • This is version 2.0 They are only $350, but you have to run it through a computer.

  • so do you have te brain? or is that what makes it so xpensive

  • There is no brain for Mandala 2.0, your laptop or PC acts as the brain and the samples are triggered through MIDI.

  • eh there guys what forum are u talkin about i wouldnt mind getting those samples

  • how much did this one cost?

  • Thanks for the samples on the forum... Uploaded them to mine today and it sounds awesome.

  • that's cool. i want to do that when i get mine. how did you sample the track. i don't know much about this.

  • I already posted these samples on the forum, so you can just get them from there.

  • Which forum is this, I'd love to get my hands on them
