  • I'm a big hat guy and the hats these guys wear in this movie are the coolest ever. Especially the one the sax player is wearing. I need one of those. Where can I get one?

  • Who is the guitar player?

  • @Pickinbuddy The guitarist is Barney Kessel.

  • That's Illinois jaquet? I always thought he was fat!

  • owww is tenor mouthpiece otto link New York 11 XD ???

  • Big Sid Catlett to Papa Jo Jones - the best handing off a relay ever!

  • Illinois Jacquet is Amazing!!! so under rated

  • How skillfully Big Sid gets a bass drum kick in there as he is getting up and handing first one stick to Jo, then waits with the other. His set is tuned so carefully; what an artist!

  • Makes me want to yell!

    I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it: The world is blessed because of these guys.

  • Smoking!

  • awesome

  • 4:14 of happiness. It is too short.

    Please give us more...

  • @ooskarwild there was a 10 minute one but youtube took it down...

  • This is about the coolest thing I`ve ever seen! That last shot of Jo Jones is priceless!!

  • This isn't the version I know of 'Jammiin' the blues' which (famously?) begins with

    curling cigarette smoke and a close=up of Lester Young's big pork pie hat tilted down to fill the opening shot, Lester then slowly lifts his head to play fully featured.

    This image was used by Dexter Gordon on the 'Ballads,' compilation.Baffled.

  • Whoa! This is brilliant in every aspect: Music, Dance, Film, production! It's inspiring.

    Thanks for this!! It made my day. I'm going to go practice my instruments AND try to learn a video editing tip or two.

  • I wish the player changes would always go this smoothly at the blues jam. Very cool switch.

  • Who are all these cats? Please.

  • mu buena rolita me encanta Y con un poco de verde

  • Wasn't this actually done in 1950, during the same time Charlie Parker, Ella, Hank Jones, Buddy Rich, Coleman Hawkins and others were filmed, instead of 1944?

  • @Streamline09

    My version has the credits. copyright 1944. By the way, you might want to look up "soundies". All the artist you mention were filmed for the soundies between 1940 and 1946, not the 50's

  • @Rincewind03060 Yes, you're correct. I checked and discovered that the same director, Gjon Mili, who did this film did the film I mentioned with Bird, et al six years later in 1950. Thanks.

  • Nice images!!!!

  • Barney's 1944 playing similar to Les Paul? Try Charlie Christian. Les dug him too.

  • Very nice!

    I would love to know to dance like that.

  • who are all the musicians?

  • Lester Young - Tenor Sax;

    Red Callender - Bass;

    Harry "Sweets" Edison - Trumpet;

    Marlowe Morris - Piano;

    Sid Catlett and Jo Jones (Not Philly Joe Jones) - Drums;

    Barney Kessel - Guitar;

    John Simmons - Bass:

    Illinois Jacquet - Tenor Sax;

    Marie Bryant - Vocals;

    outstanding cast!

  • Im hearing kessel's guitar style as being very similar to that of les paul. its incredible

  • May those guys all rest in peace wherever they all may be

  • @saanzacs heave

  • 3:22 the drummer looks so robotic

  • WONDERFUL there is nobody around today who can play even half this GOOD !!!! when did it start to go so wrong ?? ThANKS for posting this video

  • When we stopped being as dedicated as they were, is my best guess :)

  • Yeah! Great! Quel vitesse, quelle légèreté de l'improvisation (feinte?)- c'est enthousiasmant, inspirant... superbe!

  • Dweeda du da du dot dot dwee dot dwe bop bow!

  • That's interesting to know, thanks for posting it.

    I have postcards and letters from Barney.

    He was a super guy.

    RIP Barney.

  • My old mate Barney Kessell was on guitar in this film.

    1 year after I was born!

    LOL

    Barry Watson.

    Westerham, Kent.

    ( Harmonica)

  • Wikipedia and some other sources claim that Barney was shown only in silhouette and that his hands were stained with berry juice on the closeups to conceal that he is white. Apparently it was still considered controversial in 1944 to have a mixed-race band.

  • Why don't any musicians play this kind of stuff anymore? You never hear those notes being played anymore.

  • That thar video is great! Thank you kindly fer postin' this. Y'all are a creit to the internet. All the best - Judd Jugmonger (Jugmonger videos)

  • Does anyone know what kind of chords the piano player is playing. Very simple, but sounds amazing. What kind of progressions is he doing? Regards, Lewis

  • its a 145 chord progression

    a blues progression

    hence "jammin the blues"

  • Yeah, thats obvious. But if it was in C, hes not just playing C, F and G. Hes playing other chords. Hes stabbing in some jazz chordy things, I can't work out what kind of chords they are. What are they?

  • Was that Tal Farlow on guitar?

    Great Video

  • Barney Kessel the man with lightning for fingertips =).

  • Thanks I really appreciate. Barney Kessel played the guitar of Julie London's "Cry Me a River" still heard in the lounges when Martinis were dry and not flavored with Chocolate and Pomegranate! This is a great video. The dancing is impressive. Did you ever see the tap scene in "Stormy Weather" with those two brothers who were the greatest tap dancers in the world Their name escapes me. But his clip is priceless. How many gems like this are out there waiting to be discovered.

  • So many my friend, check out the tune "St.Louis Blues" by Bessie Smith, or even "Blue Yodel" with Louis "Pops" Armstrong and Johnny Cash...Jazz is really the crowning gem of American culture.

  • this is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hej

  • Wow this is top notch and American made :"]

  • Prez showed them all how how it was done..he could do 50 chourses and never repeat himself...so cool.. so laid back.. so original!

  • This unfortunately is not the entire original, which I have saved on TiVo, it comes on occasionally on TCM, watch for it, it is a phenomenal film that I keep watching over and over.

  • Fantastic musicianship. The dancing wasn't bad either! I recognise Harry Sweets Edison on trumpet and Lester Young on sax, but who is the other tenor player?

  • Yep - just WHO is the other tenor player???

    OK, he's not The Pres, but he's one cool cat!!

  • hi synthjazz - I've just found out that the other tenor player is Illinois Jacquet.

  • kessell is the man right in there with a Gibson ES150 a rareclip and fantastic

  • ES-150?!?!? Blonde, with flame maple sides and double parallelogram markers?! I don't think so. You gotta to go school, jack! It's an ES-300, second version.
