So...everyone knows that indie isn't really a style of music. It mostly refers to the fact that the band either has refused to or hasn't signed with a record label. They might make their own label / small label such as Park the Van for Dr. Dog. But now Dr. Dog is signing with Anti- records so their Indie status will be ...a little diminished.

That's actually inaccurate. That is to old definition, the mid-90's/Saddle Creek definition when the indie label was able to access a certain, broader audience than was previously possible without the aid of the internet and cable tv. Since the turn of the century, "Indie" has most certainly become a genre of it's own; a genre that includes such sub-categories as indie pop, indie rock, garage (which is not really "rock" anymore), shoegaze, industrial, and surely many others that I'm forgetting.

If thats the case what about real indie bands like modest mouse, dinosaur jr., built to spill, etc. who have an original sound? are they not indie? and it's all rock regardless of whether or not it's india. the beatles were a great orignial rock band, if your whole album is dedicated to sounding like the beatles, your making rock music

Even more than being a genre or style of music, "Indie" is an aesthetic. Though, I suppose that could be said about any musical variant. What Indie represents, and what its coordinate culture, The Hipsters, represent, is a reaction to the over-the-top-ness of the mid-90's alternative scene, and a return to a simpler, gentler form of music production. In fact, I find that the significance of the Indie sound is built more into the production than into the composition of a particular song.

/i sound this band live in 2005 and they were so cool and high energy. There new music is to beatlesque. If I want to listen to something that sounds like the beatles Ill just listen to the beatles and it'll be a thousand times better than any band trying to sound like them.
