It's a concept of how you express yourself through movement, namely martial arts. JKD incompasses many diffrent styles. It flows from one to the next. You may be using Wing Chun and then flow into Western Boxing or whatever. It's not a system but a method. Bruce Lee died before he could truly complete JKD and bring it to it's full potential. Train Hard.
I have been doing some research, I have heard that jkd is concepts? Can anyone tell me if it is or isn't?? not sure? Really need some hlp with this one? I need to know why it is or isn't, email my you tube account if anyone can explain. Thank you
@unwawbl its very much a system, philosophy is a small part of it in my opinion. concepts are applied to other arts, but Bruce Lee didn't believe in styles, he understood that once you removed "style" there was only one way for the human body to move and strike efficiently, his research into human biomechanics, laws of physics and his experience in street fighting lead him to develop JKD.
F*ing WOW dude. I am DEFINATELY doing this. I was about to buy some resistance bands for this purpose. I think you just saved me 10 bucks. Thanks a lot.
Aww, alright, well I was thinking of doubling em up though. Too much resistance perhaps? I got two old innertubes in my bike I'm going to have to replace anyways so... But still, this was very innovative and I dig the creativity! :D
yo nice work on your low speed kicks, but i have been working on high kicks for some time now and i can say that they really add mass effect to who ever has a longer arm span than you do ... keep training your looking like another rampage jackson //respectfully
Great video very creative using the tire tubes for resistance! I use bands but your idea is just as good and probably cheaper! Again excellent thanks for sharing!
Yes isometrics are essential part of training aswell, do you know what plyometrics are? You cannot focus on one method alone, for several reasons, certain method will bring about different results some are much harder to track progression, somethings require you to mirror the actual movement you would be doing for real.
wait wait wait! those are "bad" isometrics, the ones you are talking about! not good for martial artists! If you wanna gain power AND not sacrifice speed, you have to do the MAXIMUM of strenght on a fixed position for about 10 to 12 secs, as i.e., if you stand inside a doorframe, your body at one side, and the arm pushing against the other side. It's not about holding a particular position for looong time. It's bad for speed!
True, better to hold in positions similar to the positions you need strength in, standing in the doorway isn't as good as pushing against a wall because you're more likely to find yourself in the latter position during a fight. Good one is standing infront of some monkey bars at chest height and try pulling down or pushing up.
Please take these in mind - All the Summit Martial Artists learn their Concepts, Methods, Skill, Psychology ..etc mainly through the natural, the universe, the nature of science, and your OWN WISDOM.
You are amazing. I hope u will open out your basic instinct completely.
Please try to face the coiled rubber tape and pull it with your punching hand. When the tape is full with potential energy, just relax your whole body's muscles, especially your forearm's. Your fist will be flying forward suddently, sometime even with your feet( moving forward with the rebound). This is like the shooting with BOW and ARROW. You know that all the things is in-balance. The muscles'force structure is having two side mainly. Just train one side is not enough. Just suggestion.
btw, i went for the skipping-rope method; where you put one arm behind your back; with the other out in the line that you are going to punch with [slightly straight for jabs . . . slightly bent for hooks. . . slightly up for upper-cuts etc.] and used a three-step method of contraction and relaxtion; three periods [ 1/3 . . . 2/3 . . . and over-contracted (shoulder pushed out)] for both going out with the punch and coming back . . . i held the each movement for 9 seconds contraction tren relaxed.
it is about the division and understanding of things in my opinion - there are general ideas on how one thing can be done [with the physics/knowledge of how things occur] you have already divided things into relaxtion and contractions: these are elements of a movement - whether it be dancing, fighting or music/anything really . . . can be divided into it's roots.
i have gone for piercing affect so far - to aim beyond the object i aim for; and to consider in my mind that i am one [continued].
i am impressed you have implemented the piercing idea too - with the sword being an extension of your body; mastery of the weapons is meant to be at one with you.
i was considering getting both a jian [a ye olde one] and a monk's spade; the jian for extension of my force; and the monk's spade to develop the abdominal/centre-force of my body . . . i.e. the ligaments/tendons and bone's ability to produce power around a central axis
[like how it would be when spinning/gripping a monk's spade with it's resistance against the air - usually not experienced] . . . but i want a fairly weighty monk's spade :'[ am having difficulty finding one . . .
good video larsson; but i worry to some degree - i used to do isometrics myself; but i came across and article from n.a.s.a. that at the molecular root of the muscle it weakens it . . . which i believe to be true: as when striking the punch-bag etc. i found that the muscles around my triceps bone [whatever it is called] tended to pull apart from the bone :| i felt that they contracted too much and nearly ripped off . . . yes, i did mass forearm work, which should have cushioned the initial blow
Hi. I just passed-by and study yrs. Please becareful as you made injuries to yr muscles already. The muscles contract itself because you don't give them time to relax. The muscles will step into growing old stage if you still keep mass exercise. Don't forget relaxation is one of the most important part in Martial Art's training. Hope helps! My friend.
thank you - i enjoyed your videos; and have subscribed to them; i have gone down the root now of internal and external [seperately at first; then combined] to deal with those prior issues . . . the internal training has helped immensly with my muscle-issue . . . particularly my shoulders; as i have been practising praying mantis forms.
Speed is best developed by activating white fast twitch fibers without any resistance whatsoever but rather from a static re-action to a single audial, tactile or visual stimuli. The crux is to get the whole muscle groups involved in the motion to suddenly recruit every fibre possible in an instant this in tern generates explosive speed and strenght in the muscles which creates raw power.
Plyometric recoil type training such as this stuff here can be usefull but inevitably it incumbers natural movement even retarding triceps functioning and uninterupted neurological pathway thickening. One simply needs to stand still and fire on the stimulus.
Good post JunDanJimi, but I would disagree as its already been proven to work in other sports very effectively. When firing on stimilus you training your response reaction time, you may increase in punching speed but the increase is much less than plyometric or resistance training.
Another example of methods also used in sports are those electronic devices that send impulses through the muscle, Bruce Lee used them himself.
I'm not concerned in other sports or sports at all for that matter, Self-Defence isn't sport, and my response reaction time to a stimulus, i.e, a dude trying to rip my head of is the whole point of JKD.
It is the explosion from static to potential rather than borrowing from momentum that really counts in Self-Defence. As I said plyometrics can be useful at times but it will never overshadow suddeness. God bless.
Your missing the point Jimi, obviously those examples are geared specifically to the sporting goal. You just have take the principle and apply it to the martial art goal. For example wearing weighted jacket whilst doing footwork, or using a trappling whilst throwing combinations are methods used in "sports" that will enhance your attributes as a martial arts. At the end of the day you need to be in better shape, stronger, faster and have more skill than the person infront of you.
I understand the point fully my friend and yes it's very true that being in good shape is a bonus but as you get older like me you will learn that the old bull fucks all the cows in the field whereas the young bull fucks only a few because he's impetuous. Putting a guy in hospital if necessary isn't about plyometrics or fancy footwork, it's about brutality, bottle and suddenness and if the fly boy wan'ts the old man then the fly boy will have to come. BEWARE OF THE OLD BULLS HORNS.
how do you actually build speed? because i read in one of the earlier comments that this does not improve your speed.
my repsonse: They are incorrect. Many atheletes use resistance methods to build speed and strength. Example sprinters running with a tractor tyre or paracute. You may of seen the famous photo of Muhammad Ali boxing underwater.
Do some research you will find many other methods for developing speed and strength.
Dont do Forums anymore, not been on here for a while either. No, my vid showed punching, kicking and hip rotator exercises with an inner tube, there are many more. You should get thicker tubes, maybe try throwing in some pause reps if you dont already.

Hi Chukspinna I learnt this from watching Pat Strong and reading some stuff on Jesse Glover. I remember you had a vid showing squats and kicking. Are you still a member of the TC board?
hi Zakki I do not have an instructor at the moment. At the time this video was recorded I had been training with a German instructor called Wilfred Seng.
larsonk22 i was wondering if you where ever going to mention the fact that you were taught this stuff form Tommy Carruthers. Nothing like credit were credit is due.
Please don't talk as if you know me or anything that Tommy has taught me. If you knew anything you would know that when asked I will tell you where I got these ideas from. On another note I never met Tommy until November 2007, this video clearly states when it was recorded, 17th of July!
im confused how you think isometrics give you speed. When isometrics is just static contrations. Speed requires dynamic contractions since its a movement.
this is nice man!!! I was wonderin if ur sifu knows of any jkd instructors in fort wayne indiana because I've been searching for a while now and I cant seem to find any. I appreciate ur help.-
Also iso-metrics are probably one of the best speed and fiber recruitment training processes. True iso-metrics! I would be glad to share my knowledge and experience should you be interested. Also very, very slow movements repeated over and over are very, very good at hard wiring your neural pathways. Tai chi is done very slowly for a reason. Try fighting a tai chi master and see if they are slow!
I notice you only push, a master showed me once his fist in front of a candle. He retracted it and the candle blew out. He told me it was better to be faster coming back as you can reload your punch to fire again quicker. Which makes sense. One shot rarely finishes the day. If you can punch-reload and again before your opponent, guess what? You'll hit him first.
lol...wah...nice..u can afford all tat ._." didt know u got 1 more video..improved speed! erm here sum tips..do push ups the heart is important..and err..do legs push up..jump then sit and Repeat..
I've improved my training since making this video, I also to plyometric exercises, sprinting, running with weights vest, weighted and non weighted pushups in addition to the weight training I do.
Inner tubes are very soft I don't get any soreness at all. I have some really tough resistance bands which I have to tie around my wrist because those really do hurt.
Speed is important but in my small view timing is a must! being able to time. When your opponent throws a technique then for you to counter it quickly can mean the difference between victory and defeat. It will also save you energy and you can get off out of a dangerous situation quickly.
Yes, the next stage for this type of training will be trying to hit a training partner with this restistance still on. Then i would progress onto defense, counter attacking, interception.
training slow to achieve speed is true in certain cases. 'cause in a way you relax the antagonistic muscles while performing the technique, thus eliminating its "braking" effect on the movement. but if i can recall correctly, bruce was quoted as saying that he did'nt know of anyone winning the 100-meter dash by just jogging each and every day.
Kata are performed slow to ingrain the correct movements into muscle memory so that they can be performed quickly and correctly. However this doesnt make you fast.
Yet i have always thought that when doing these kinds of excercises, you should always hit at least something, because if not, it will put terrible strain on your joints and muscles.
no entirely true, it depends on the weight or resistance you are using. To heavy you could injury yourself, too light you wont develop as quickly. Its all about progression.
I agree speed is nothing without the proper technique. However you cannot achieve speed by training slower, that goes against the principle of muscle memory. Training slow is good for mastering the proper technique. I train slowly when im training my techniques, but when it comes to weight and resistance everything is about gaining maximum power and speed.
how bout training slower....so the tension of the rubber doesn't stop...u achive speed by training slower..like doing a front kick not fast..but slow and keep ur balance thats garantee my friend....to achive speed u train slow....u lose the tension if u do it that way...
These drills are great for building strength but will do little for building speed or power. They will, in fact slow your techniques down. Muscles have memory and will reset to how fast you train them. Slower kicks and punches with the bands will make for slower kicks and punches without the bands. Simple kinesiology. These drills would work best if some really intense speed work is included.
That is probably what helps. Like I said, you have a good training technique for building strength. But you have to augment it with speed work to get the most out of it. For my sword work I use a bamboo rod for most of my katas because it's light weight allows me to move it around faster. My muscles remember this and are much faster when I use the sword itself in form competitions.
Sorry Edalb the hands on my hips, if you watch again I put both tubes ove my head and bring them down to my waist. I then concentrate on strengthening the power of my hip rotation.
Oh ok that's a really cool exercise. Hey I know another you can do is practise your backfist with the tubes (saw Pierre Hartmann do that). If you could let me know what tubes you have if you buy another box that would be great because I can't stretch the tubes I have too far.
Not sure, they were standard mountain bike as far as im aware. Im planning on getting somemore and attach them onto the other points on the window, so I will make sure to keep the box this time round.
Really cool training idea though. I've bought some two days ago but it didn't seem to be able to stretch as far as yours did so I thought maybe the resistance I have is very strong or maybe i'm just weak lol. By the way, what was that exercise you were doing with your hands at your hips?
good job :)

pretty good

I've improved my training since making this video, I also to plyometric exercises, sprinting, running with weights vest, weighted and non weighted pushups in addition to the weight training I do.

you should glue like a glove to it so you dont have to hold on to it and hurt your palm
nice though :D

Inner tubes are very soft I don't get any soreness at all. I have some really tough resistance bands which I have to tie around my wrist because those really do hurt.

Very nice workout

Speed is important but in my small view timing is a must! being able to time. When your opponent throws a technique then for you to counter it quickly can mean the difference between victory and defeat. It will also save you energy and you can get off out of a dangerous situation quickly.
Kalydosos 4 years ago
Yes, the next stage for this type of training will be trying to hit a training partner with this restistance still on. Then i would progress onto defense, counter attacking, interception.
larssonk22 4 years ago
Correct I agree!
Kalydosos 4 years ago
another thing is that by moving fast, you train dynamic balance. by moving slow you develop static balance.
just putting in my ten centavos worth!(which is not worth anything in our currency!)

hi, larsson.
training slow to achieve speed is true in certain cases. 'cause in a way you relax the antagonistic muscles while performing the technique, thus eliminating its "braking" effect on the movement. but if i can recall correctly, bruce was quoted as saying that he did'nt know of anyone winning the 100-meter dash by just jogging each and every day.
regards.
jasonjkd 4 years ago
thanks Jason, yeh makes sense.
Kata are performed slow to ingrain the correct movements into muscle memory so that they can be performed quickly and correctly. However this doesnt make you fast.
larssonk22 4 years ago
Be like the water, my friend ;)
Yet i have always thought that when doing these kinds of excercises, you should always hit at least something, because if not, it will put terrible strain on your joints and muscles.
cueballB 4 years ago
no entirely true, it depends on the weight or resistance you are using. To heavy you could injury yourself, too light you wont develop as quickly. Its all about progression.

nice man im doing it to....

hey great idea man im traing my self aswell.
sinjikiX 4 years ago
i respect wat u do...but wats speed if theres not much technique on it and not being accurate...peace man
tae0mo 4 years ago
I agree speed is nothing without the proper technique. However you cannot achieve speed by training slower, that goes against the principle of muscle memory. Training slow is good for mastering the proper technique. I train slowly when im training my techniques, but when it comes to weight and resistance everything is about gaining maximum power and speed.
larssonk22 4 years ago
how bout training slower....so the tension of the rubber doesn't stop...u achive speed by training slower..like doing a front kick not fast..but slow and keep ur balance thats garantee my friend....to achive speed u train slow....u lose the tension if u do it that way...
tae0mo 4 years ago
These drills are great for building strength but will do little for building speed or power. They will, in fact slow your techniques down. Muscles have memory and will reset to how fast you train them. Slower kicks and punches with the bands will make for slower kicks and punches without the bands. Simple kinesiology. These drills would work best if some really intense speed work is included.
Raving 4 years ago
I've had no such negative effects. I do however always finish with repeating everything over again with no resistence so perhaps that helps.
larssonk22 4 years ago
That is probably what helps. Like I said, you have a good training technique for building strength. But you have to augment it with speed work to get the most out of it. For my sword work I use a bamboo rod for most of my katas because it's light weight allows me to move it around faster. My muscles remember this and are much faster when I use the sword itself in form competitions.

great idea... I'm stealing it. :)

thats pretty neat. I remember having a similar setup at the boxing gym i used to train. I just hope that rig is secure =)

wow i might actually try this to get more power in my punches. all i do rite now is lift weights
navysealboy62 4 years ago
Sorry Edalb the hands on my hips, if you watch again I put both tubes ove my head and bring them down to my waist. I then concentrate on strengthening the power of my hip rotation.
larssonk22 4 years ago
Oh ok that's a really cool exercise. Hey I know another you can do is practise your backfist with the tubes (saw Pierre Hartmann do that). If you could let me know what tubes you have if you buy another box that would be great because I can't stretch the tubes I have too far.
Edalb123 4 years ago
what are the stats for yours?
larssonk22 4 years ago
26" puncture resistant tubing.
Edalb123 4 years ago
Hey Larsson, got any more of those amazing tubes yet? :)
Edalb123 4 years ago
Nevermind I got the proper tubing now for punching. Thanks anyways though.
Edalb123 4 years ago
nice vid ill have to give that a try
98supra 4 years ago
inner tube from a bicycle round your waist does the job if u cant tie it around a fixed object behind you
ps6251 4 years ago
How long is the tubing you're using and how tough is the resistance?
Edalb123 4 years ago
Not sure, they were standard mountain bike as far as im aware. Im planning on getting somemore and attach them onto the other points on the window, so I will make sure to keep the box this time round.
larssonk22 4 years ago
Really cool training idea though. I've bought some two days ago but it didn't seem to be able to stretch as far as yours did so I thought maybe the resistance I have is very strong or maybe i'm just weak lol. By the way, what was that exercise you were doing with your hands at your hips?
Edalb123 4 years ago
Its just developing the correct muscles for the movement, my brother can lift much more weights than me but he cant do those punching drills.
larssonk22 4 years ago
Clever.
