The best thing I can offer is to do it MORE often so it does not pull on their skin. (Maybe while you are relaxing watching TV). I find if the wool is loose they do not mind and actually like a nice cheek rub. If it does get matted, I cut into the mat in several places, (making sure not to cut too deep) then spread the chunks apart and carefully loosen the hair. Brush their cheeks 2 times a week to keep the wool loose. G.

@Melleoneful : Under the wool they are not that big. They weigh 7 lbs at the most.

My Angora hates when I brush his face so I have to take him to get shaved when it starts to get matted.
DO you have a tip for me brushing his face (cheeks) his legs and the chest area??
