Well TOO MUCH of a goofy face while playing is indeed silly. But facial expressions add life to the playing. It helps soothe the player and audience's emotions on the type of music they're hearing. I would rather choose an expressive player doing easy stuff rather than a fast-fingered player just standing still and looking at his hands.

The facial expressions are usually not for the sake of the audience. They are a result of a genuinely felt experience of what the player is playing.
