Today, in the beginning of the 21st century, we are truly seeing the tail end of the passing of virtually all of the world's large animals, herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores along with their habitats. Oh, there's "success stories" of species "bouncing back," but it's really just tiny zig-zags on their way down. The over-all trajectory for ALL large animals is DOWN. Soul species responsible? Homo sapiens, supposedly the most intelligent of all species!
Henry David Thoreau said in the 1850s --- as he was writing Civil Disobedience and doing civil disobedience, a one-man operation --- that he was born in "the nick of time." Perhaps for him, because he already saw what was coming... but in the 1830s to 1860s, most of the world's large, majestic animals were still in the hundreds of thousands, to millions in some cases. Except in Europe, where the Europeans pretty much wiped out 95% of the large few carnivores by the 1800s.
fact of the matter is they will be extinct in 10 years no matter what anyone does...yeah its a nice story, but in the end, this woman's work will all be in vein...the rate at which great apes are dying far exceeds the rate they are breeding/being rescued...does not take a genius to do the math...maybe then these bleeding hearts can focus on the children of these third world countries and not some animal...
@bowlskiforme You make a very good point. This woman spends on average $4000 a year on each of these animals, in a country where many children starve and have no medical or dental care at all.
Think humans destroying the environment stops with orangutan extinction and the destruction of Bornean rainforests? Its doesn't. If the environment dies, WE will die. There are countless organizations helping human children already. Human arrogance is astounding.
Nothing like human egocentrism, we are the only species arrogant enough to singlehandedly destory our own planet and have the selfishness and greed to demand we focus our own own needs fist.
The day the last wild orangutan dies, will be one of the blackest saddest day of my life. It should be so for everyone, but clearly it it is not.
Love of money and pressure for modern day human food ie: cheap ingridients which Palm Oil gives, is the main culprit.
There are many people doing all they can to save these wonderful creatures, but so long as this Genocide of the Gingers goes on at this rate, the fight seems doomed to fail. But we will never give up trying. Long live the orangutans!

it's sad to say but in fact that Indonesian people had no wellfare...a lots of children do not have any education...for getting food its difficult, then people do not think about education or about the nature
but Indonesian people do not interest in had a pet...mostly the demand for orangutans, comes from the other country
its difficult situation and dillematic Indonesian people...the goverment had really lesss action about this problems

I find it funny (more like pathetic) how many people are so enthusiastic about saving the “cute” animals like baby orangutans but when it comes to an animal that isn’t “cute” they could care less. It just goes to show how selfish and hypocritical these kinds of people are.
@mrcardio9r First of all, I can't think of any animals that aren't cute. All animals are beautiful. What animals exactly were you thinking of here?
And I'd like to know what you yourself do to help the animals that you don't view as cute? I always find it amazing how some people sit and criticise hard-working people for "not doing enough", when they do nothing themselves! I mean, how could you possibly call these caring people selfish? Stop complaining and get working yourself!!
@1980NewWave almost richest man in indonesia have illegal logging buisnies, they bribe police, governor, avoid to pay taxes, n killed who protest their illegal logging mafia... we cant do nothing here...can u help us???
ORANGUTANS are in top 25 most endangered species & if we do not stop this illegal hunting & pet trade, deforestation, they will become extinct.. Young orangutans are dependent on their mothers for survival and to obtain an infant for the pet trade it is necessary to kill the mother. It has been estimated that for every infant that survives the process of capture & transport, at least 3 others will have been lost, & each of these infants also represents the death of an adult female orangutan.
Perhaps what I should have said was that it is illegal to own orangutans. Orangutans are protected in Sumatra by legislation, which prohibits the owning, killing, or capture of orangutans. In practice, poachers still hunt them, mostly for the pet trade. In international law, orangutans are listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, prohibiting unlicensed trade due to the conservation status of the species in the wild.
Education is the key - alerting the rich pet buyers that it is wrong to order and buy these wild animals. Getting Govt to enforce laws against poaching, hunting and killing. Agreeing to safeguard and secure natural forest habitat for the animals and plants - not easy when you face greedy businesses but for the sake of our planet to reduce climate change/minimise extinction of key animals it is essential. Well done for promoting this work in your films -it should be essential viewing at school
now hold on, people have the right to own animals, just because you cant afford it, doesnt mean we shouldnt buy them? but i wouldnt buy them that way, their are breeders.
@abdulbade These are our closest cousins and you want to kill and keep them as pets? I'd rather let them go wild and be free. We share a common ancestor with these beautiful creatures. No god, no intervention, just us and them. leave them be
Killing the mother and snatching the baby is outright cruel. I think the people most to blame are those who buy these as pets. Borneo, Indonesia and the countries where these animals are found are mostly poor who will do anything to earn a good buck. The Western people have to discourage them from killing these creatures as a source of livelihood.
The video states, '1000 orangutans smuggled out of Indonesia every year.' How can that be? Most sources tell that there are only about 5,000 orangs left in the that country. If one discard males as a source for baby animals, that leaves only about 2500 apes with babies. Not all females have babies, so, cut that in half = 1250 animals with babies. There should already be no baby orangs left in the wild. Impossible. Just an observation, not criticism.
No there are about 45,000 left perhaps in Malaysia and Indonesia (data compiled in 2003 gave figures of 55,000 to 60,000). Some conservationists believe as many as 5000 orangutans die of unnatural causes every year. Many of these will be as a result of the illegal wildlife trade, many more from destruction of their habitat for palm oil and timber.
I don't like the plantation owners killing Orangs as pests, or local Borneans trying to sell them in the pet trade, but at least I can see where they are coming from. They are just trying to eek out a living for their families. My contempt is reserved for people in the Western world with more money than sense or compassion, who buy these animals as pets, knowing full well how many die in the process.
Your point is valid, but I have contempt for all parties involved in the mindless destruction of our planet. They can eke out a living doing something else...
I agree, and it should be part of any conservation effort to provide education and job opportunities to the local population, so that the deforestation/pet trade/poaching issue can be tackled at its roots. The way forward for mountain gorilla conservation has been to make eco tourism a huge industry for the local population, so they have a vested interest and pride in keeping the animals safe.
Excellent comment, that would be a perfect solution if it would work there. It's a tough job to actually solve the problem, but it must be solved nonetheless.
The tourist trade just isn't enough. Most people don't know that Indonesia is one of the most populated countries on the planet. Most of whom would not pay the $5000.00 to fly to a steaming, disease-ridden, dangerous place to have an ape piss on them from a tree. But, if you believe in your idea, hey, open a business. Prove me wrong.
As if they choose to have all those orphans needing 24/7 care! It's not a plea to get your money unsuspectingly - it's a genuine to save the guys from extinction. Perhaps if you looked at the severity of the problem you'd see it's not a mere scam for your money!
Abortion is freedom of individual choice - the orangs don't get a choice of being orphaned at a few weeks old or butchered, shot, burnt alive just through being in the way of man's greedy selfish so-called development! Once the rainforests are gone - we too will face the same plight of extinction as the lungs of the world will be gone!
Catsonmoon - I agree. Corporations are not doing enough. Cadbury, Thorntons, Mars all use palm oil in all of their chocolate, for instance. Green & Blacks and Divine do not use it. Companies like Lush do not use it in their soap and have donated money and a vehicle to such orangutan sanctuaries (they've called it the Orangu-van!).
It's all part of the insane belief that we can have 6.5 billion people on the planet--and keep a natural enviroment for all wildlife! We'd be better off ot domesticate some of them, and place them in good homes. We'd at least save the species.
These animals are beautiful, intelligent creatures that deserve to live free and live peacefully. Just as we need to support the innocent children of the world we need to protect the innocent animals. I cannot believe the ignorance and lack of care for another living creature!!!! People like you are why the worl is in the condition that it is. If anyone should be hunted the it is you ta2joe13!
Thank you and no hard feelings! 1 thumbs-up duly returned! :o) It just infuriates me the suffering that orangutans are enduring for man's so-called progression and Government corruption.
Ive heard that it is a rare and hard process. Becuase you have to be a/an Primate expert and its only at certinlotations in the USA where you can do it at. Although they seem to have the care of babie and it would be an extremly fun and loving job.
Thank goodness there are people like you who have such big hearts and rescue God's little helpless victims of such cruel inhumane practices. I wish the governments or someone would put an end to this and all animal abuse. How can anyone live with themselves who take part in such cruelty. Keep up your dedicated great work. Thanks for promoting this so it might bring you some help.
You say its "horrid" for people to kill orangutans YET you'd love to have one as a pet? You think an orangutan would benefit from you treating it like a human baby infant as your pet? And what happens when it grows up? Yeah I'm sure it'll do real well having grown up being pampered like a human baby infant with no fear of people, etc. Orangutans aren’t civilized human beings; they’re WILD animals and should be treated as such for their own well being.
You haven't seen what this organzation does, only the very youngest orangutans are taken care of this way. Older orangutans are placed in more wild settings with different, more distanced caretakers and eventually are placed on protected islands. Its the next best thing to living in the wild.
@loner1878 Actually I do know. This lady was an airline stewardess with no training whatever, she built a sanctuary for 150 animals and now has over 700 that are dependent on human care and has returned none to the wild. Because of the constant human contact the animals now carry diseases that wild animals have no immunity to so if she ever does release any of these the wild population will likely be destroyed. Although she has good intentions she is likely doing more harm than good.
So what have you done for Orangutans to surpass her? Her organization has saved hundreds of orangutans from certain death and yes they do release many orangutans captured on palm oil plantations to the wild. Only the youngest of orangutans are dependent on humans (no different than how they would be dependent on their mothers at those ages). The older ones are allowed more and more independence and less oversight by people.
@loner1878 Its understandable that you are confused. ALL of her animals are dependent on human care, they are ALL fed daily and NONE have been released back into the wild. By saving a few she will likely devastate what's left of the wild population. She has essentially become an animal hoarder. She pulls at the heart strings of well meaning people in order to perpetuate her role as savior of animals when in fact she does more harm than good in the long run. Rather sad but true.
No, you clearly don't get it. You would prefer the orangutans in her care be dead? I have seen them releasing recently captured orangutans back to the wild. The orphaned infants would die if left in the wild (oh yeah, you prefer that).The orangutans on her island sanctuaries find their own food in part, but the islands are not set to handle so many of them so supplemental food drops are necessary. And not a shred of evidence to support your exagerrations, I see.
@loner1878 Its understandable that you are misguided, TV shows are far more concerned about ratings than the cold hard truth. The islands are not able to sustain the growing population because they never release any into the wild. As any other informed biologist will tell you this project is guaranteeing that the wild population will not survive.
What TV show? Lone hopes to begin wild releases when the orangutans are prepared and she can find safe land for them. I see more of your exagerrated claims and no substance to them. I suppose you oppose zoos as well?
The oldest learn to fend for themselves on island sanctuaries. And her island sancutaries may be the only place orangutans can survive the extinction they are faced with. Where is your evidence for all the orangutans having human diseases?
my life will be over the day these wonderful creatures are extinct

@YourRayOfTheSun You can try the Great Ape Trust donations. I don`t know if they go to orangutans, but they go to great apes.

i think a healthy orang population is necessary; may need them for medicinal testing in the future as they best mimic human dna
blabberaol 2 years ago
Wake up! It's the 21st century! They have a right to live and survive as they do .. not for human convenience of medical testing!

Palm oil manfacture is the reason this catastrophe is happening. The Orangutan recovery program is what's important here.

Does anyone know where to go to volunteer for organisations like this?
420Sabbath 3 years ago 10
Ive heard that it is a rare and hard process. Becuase you have to be a/an Primate expert and its only at certinlotations in the USA where you can do it at. Although they seem to have the care of babie and it would be an extremly fun and loving job.

Thank goodness there are people like you who have such big hearts and rescue God's little helpless victims of such cruel inhumane practices. I wish the governments or someone would put an end to this and all animal abuse. How can anyone live with themselves who take part in such cruelty. Keep up your dedicated great work. Thanks for promoting this so it might bring you some help.

@lilratscal soo true!!!! im now obssesd with orangutan (babyzz)
its horridwhat they doo!! but im so happy ppl r rescuing these beutiful creatures if only i could have one xxxxx
TheDoggielover95 1 year ago
@TheDoggielover95
Orangutans aren’t civilized human beings; they’re WILD animals and should be treated as such for their own well being.
mrcardio9r 1 year ago 3
@mrcardio9r The way these women baby these things they will never survive in the wild again. They are dooming them to a life of captivity.
chad11950 1 year ago
@chad11950
You haven't seen what this organzation does, only the very youngest orangutans are taken care of this way. Older orangutans are placed in more wild settings with different, more distanced caretakers and eventually are placed on protected islands. Its the next best thing to living in the wild.
loner1878 1 year ago
@loner1878 Actually I do know. This lady was an airline stewardess with no training whatever, she built a sanctuary for 150 animals and now has over 700 that are dependent on human care and has returned none to the wild. Because of the constant human contact the animals now carry diseases that wild animals have no immunity to so if she ever does release any of these the wild population will likely be destroyed. Although she has good intentions she is likely doing more harm than good.
chad11950 1 year ago
@chad11950
The older ones are allowed more and more independence and less oversight by people.
loner1878 1 year ago
@loner1878 Its understandable that you are confused. ALL of her animals are dependent on human care, they are ALL fed daily and NONE have been released back into the wild. By saving a few she will likely devastate what's left of the wild population. She has essentially become an animal hoarder. She pulls at the heart strings of well meaning people in order to perpetuate her role as savior of animals when in fact she does more harm than good in the long run. Rather sad but true.
chad11950 1 year ago
@chad11950
And not a shred of evidence to support your exagerrations, I see.
loner1878 1 year ago
@loner1878 Its understandable that you are misguided, TV shows are far more concerned about ratings than the cold hard truth. The islands are not able to sustain the growing population because they never release any into the wild. As any other informed biologist will tell you this project is guaranteeing that the wild population will not survive.
chad11950 1 year ago
@chad11950
What TV show? Lone hopes to begin wild releases when the orangutans are prepared and she can find safe land for them. I see more of your exagerrated claims and no substance to them. I suppose you oppose zoos as well?
loner1878 1 year ago
@chad11950
(continued)
The oldest learn to fend for themselves on island sanctuaries. And her island sancutaries may be the only place orangutans can survive the extinction they are faced with. Where is your evidence for all the orangutans having human diseases?
loner1878 1 year ago
@lilratscal As long as humans exist there will always be cruelty to animals.

@Pieter15 As long as life exists there will be cruelty to animals. Quit acting like humans are the only ones that do it because we ar not.
