This sounds like a couple of kids in a dorm playing to their computer compared to the Soulsavers version. Not bad but not as polished or professional.
Yeah. . .but in all fairness this is a song that resonates because of its lyrics; even though Soulsavers have a better arrangement -- arguably a stronger vocal -- you have to respect the original writer.
Like I said that is your opinion and I don't share it. It doesn't make either one of us wrong just different. Often I find covers less enjoyable but in this case the cover sounds better to me. Also I like a band that actually works on their music so it gets better. Many artists feel that their music gets better as they grow as artists. Is this wrong? Like I said opinions are only worthy to the ones that hold them otherwise they are just words.
thanks for letting me get a glimpse of what it is like driving over that bridge to one of the best songs ever written, I will probably never get a chance to get there in person in my worthless pissant life
@squarelogic I did myself a favor and listened to it and wasn't too impressed. I can appreciate covers, but Will's voice adds a quality to music that even Johnnie Cash had a problem capturing. It's a sort of naked honesty and soulful quality if that makes any sense. It's hard to put it into words. The version that you refer to is way too polished.
Polished ? Lanegan ! seriously Oldham's original is lovely and I agree about the " naked honesty " ( and that's a quality that Lanegan's work has too) For me Lanegan's version is , oh I don't know , more profound ? It speaks to me of depths of despair and an acceptance of despair.
That's your opinion, just like the above is mine. Lanegan's is way polished. If you don't get that, then I don't know what else to say. You are arguing about some shit that I said nothing about. I don't care why you like the cover of this song. I replied to let you know that I don't think Lanegan's is better at all.
I second that. While some people will be more into the original version, those unfamiliar with the original may very well like Soulsavers' version of it. It's darker and much more beautiful IMO. Got to give Soulsavers credit for turning it into their own thing...
Sounds like a A and a G to me, for the first verse, and after that a D somewhere, when he says "and behind you I have warned you"...but I'm only saying it by ear I could be wrong, and there are other notes along with the chords
Soul Savers does a lot of work with Will Oldham too. The cover of this is the B side to a Mark Lanegan penned song called Sunlight, sung by Will Oldham.

Not to mention Lanegan just oozes talent. Every song he sings turns to gold much like Johnny Cash IMHO.

You prefer music like this when it's polished & professional? Maybe you need to loosen up & listen again
JofusSunshyne 1 year ago 3
Why will it somehow become better? Sorry it's only an opinion not a slam and my opinion is worth as much as yours.
Gamesman001 1 year ago
The comment you made made it seem like you thought this one was inadequate, this one is greater in my opinion because it's raw.
The polished product doesn't make it better, it's music.

ha ha good band!

I'd love them to do two EPs. One of Lanegan doing Oldham and another of Oldham doing Lanegan tunes.
Why someone marked you down is anyone's guess, precious twit probably.
Soulsavers version of this is brilliant, much like their version of Sunlight. Covers as they should be.
