In America at least, you cannot drive trains. You can operate them or "run" them. But no driving them. Also, it isn't a street level crossing, it's a grade crossing. It's a level crossing if it's in Europe. Nice vid though!
Very good video but, I have never seen !), a train drive directly through a Town and B), so many roads that end up having to cross the track in such short a distance!
Really worrying for how and why this sort of planing was actually allowed to be done.
@mrbluenun This is my hometown. New Albany, Indiana is an old city, founded in 1813. This is the old Monon mainline. It served several industries that were located within the city. The old Monon lines also street-run in Bedford and Lafayette. I do not know when that line was laid and exactly why it street runs, but considering railroad activity in this city dates to 1847 I assume they were no too worried about horses with wagons and buggies with the crossings.
@robertgift Obviously not. All of the intersecting streets had grade-crossing lights too, so they stopped when those came on. The train would have been moving no faster than 10-15 mph as well.
Just for the record: CSX just announced they are ceasing operations on this line. The line is a part of the old MONON Railroad line from Louisville to Chicago, and it looks looks like its days are numbered. At one point this line saw 20 to 30 trains per day, now it's about to fade into oblivion.
@trainman122 Correct, and over in Europe, street track would be called a tramway no matter what runs on it, whether streetcar or train. Also, "level crossing" is the European term for grade crossing.
In the first segment of the video, the train is going much slower and is much further away from the people and vehicles than it appears. The apparent closeness of objects to the train is an optical illusion caused by the camera's telephoto lens. However, it's still amazing they would continue to run trains down a street like that in this day and age. Fascinating stuff.
Only in New Albany. Im Surprised there isnt one death a week along 15th st. Everytime I'm down that way the signals are going off and there is no train comming. That has been goign on for 10+ years.
Have you ever called and reported it to the rail yard? If you have and they didnt do anything you can call to notify the police and even the NTSB or something and get that all fixed and maybe prevent something tragic from happening.
I am glad you liked the video. The kid at the 56 second mark is a nut and on this day we also saw him riding down the track without a care for the safety for himself or others, the good news is that a local officer put the kid in the back of his car and the bike in his trunk, n doubt he will be grounded. LOL
Thanks for the clarity there! Maybe you could give me a little better way of finding it on the google maps and I could mark it and link to it here so everyone else could see that. (thumbs up!)
Indeed there are, makes me wonder if there are as many in other places other then the US, as many countries are older and have less street crossings, makes you wonder is all.
There are many good reasons why there would be a crossing like this, so unless your from the area you have no basis of information to make an intelligent statement as such, please refrain from making pointless comments like this on my videos. Thank you very much!
Trains street running are SO COOL!!!! Someday I'd like to live in a place where trains street run. You even caught an ex southern pacific engine un patched! That's rare!
Well usually when a railroad owns engines from another railroad that they took over they usually repaint the engines into the railroad that they now belong to, give it new numbers, or list the new railroads innitials somewhere on it. So if you find an engine from a railroad that's no longer around and it still has the original railroad name, number, and doesn't show the new railroads innitials you've got an unpatched engine!
Awesome thanks for the info on that, your the only one to date that I know of that has used the term and then been able to explain what it means, lol odd as that seems a guy around here looked at an engine nand claimed it was unpatched and when I asked him what that ment he couldnt explain at all. lol.
Seymour, Indiana is just as crazy on the railroad I work for. We run through the middle in a North and South direction. People try to beat us, and we are only doing 20mph because of the CSX diamond there we cross.
Fun. Reminds me of my Amtrak train running right in the middle of the boulevard at New Iberia LA.

Very well done, interesting video!
Better, if possible, would be to video from a higher position, like a roof, because with telephoto it is not possible to discern distance.
The dog "playing chicken" may have been a block or two ahead of the train. Same with drivers continuing to cross.
A higher position would reveal that.

@robertgift Running a long/telaphoto type lens will fool us 3D people in a 2D video. We have no real way to judge distance.

@IMRROcom Height - looking down would allow one to perceive distance better.
