wow! it was only 10 to 20 seconds really???? it felt like it was forever, of course i was only like 5 years old at the time in Van Nuys, off of victory and woodman. Man!, that was scary. Till this day i remember this.
Of all the bad memories this quake gave me, one thing i will always remember is looking up at the sky as i left my house, i couldnt believe how many stars you could see when the power gets cut in the entire city. I was 14 at the time, lived on corbin ave and saticoy st, about 3/4 mile west of the epicenter.
My grate aunt was there she was in bed in a 10-story apartment story. She said she was on the fifth floor when she woke to the shaking. Then she screamed out as four floor when out from under her putting her on the ground floor she had never scrabbled out of some where so fast of been more scared. Even the riot of 1992 where not as scary as this day.
i remember that quake like yesterday. i woke up because of loud rumble and next thing i know my bedroom was being slammed, hard and then yanked back n forth in jerk-like motion. it was bad.
i remember this earthquake, and the many aftershocks that followed. all the lights went out then turned back on i think the next day. it was really scary.
Yup I was. It was 4:30 in the morning I believe. I was asleep and all of a sudden I hear a loud rumble and the floor and my bed shaking (sounds wrong XD LOL) I woke up unaware of what was going on until my mother came in and grabbed me out of the room and took me into my grams room. I had no clue what was going on till she explained it to me but still it was very frightening and ever since that day I have had a earthquake phobia. Every time there is one I freak out. But oh well. Can't stop it..
6? I feel old! I was a senior in high school, went to school in the valley. Our school was damaged and we were out for about a month. The most frightening thing was waking up in pitch black darkness, not knowing the status of your family as you hear your home crash and break apart around you. A horrible experience that we'll have again. We're having a lot of little quakes in LA again and in Santa Monica, which, we did for many weeks prior to Northridge.
This was a very scarey time. You dont realize the power of God until you go thru an earthquake like that. The ground continued to shake for months after that. Seeing this makes me feel like it was yesterday. People were living in Balboa park because they were afraid to stay in their homes. I was lucky to be in Burbank and my apartment only had cosemtic damage.
yah i remember this quake, had a lot of aftershocks for a long time. i started watching tv under my table because every once in a while there's an aftershock lol

Too bad you didn't get video of all the highrises.
I got shots of all the bases of the highrises in beverly hills and hollywood before the owners painted them over. all were badly damaged.
