I was lucky to see Phantom in Toronto several times in the early 90's --met Colm Wilkinson and had my picture taken with him -- I had sung Christine in excerpts with a tenor for performances with a local orchestra. It was hard to sit in the theatre as I kept singing along! I remember singing a few bars of "Phantom" with Colm when I met him and he was so gracious -told me to leave my name with his assistant! I was returning to the States the next day. But Crawford was the best Phantom IMO.
Can somebody please explain how All I Ask Of You has a major 9th in it? As to what I'm playing I'm not getting it. Although I doubt Lloyd Webber is wrong!
Ps. Doesn't On My Own have Major 9th? Is he not familiar with Les Mis?!
I like how Colm Wilkinson was the "first" phantom. Then later went and starred in the Canadian production. He sounded much better in that than in this one lol
"But why give you flowers, they only last for hours" ??????? This is a great glimpse into the creative process, even the masters don't get it right the first time. Thanks for posting the series, had no idea it existed.....
I love how Jonathan Allen calls Maria Bjonson a "crazy genius" because in a way you kind of have to be crazy to work in show business.....and it's a good kind of crazy!!!
Don't want to see the characters and their story butchered for future generations?
Then be appalled to know that in Lloyd Webber's unwelcome sequel, entitled LOVE NEVER DIES, which is based on a flop novella by Frederick Forsyth, the Phantom no longer composes opera but trashy vaudeville while not being a bartender, Christine sleeps around, Meg becomes a topless dancer who murders Christine and Raoul becomes an alcoholic and wife abuser.
to be honest, i believe that sarah and webber were perfect for each other, in one of the later in this series, a critic says " Sarah only got the role because of the fact she was webbers wife, shes not that pretty of a voice, and shes not attractive." SARAH IS MY DREAMGIRL! she is so hot!
Who sings 'I could bring you flowers..' in the very early version of All I ask of you. It can't be Steve Barton..as least I think not. I really like this guys voice though
I truly believe Andrew's love for Sarah was one of the biggest reasons why Phantom was so successful. I'm not sure if Andrew Lloyd Webber found an inspiration as captivating while writing Love Never Dies, that's why I'm worried about it. But I'll still make sure to catch it when it opens on Broadway
Yeah, your right! The moment I saw these vids, I reliezed that Webber wasn't doing the sequel for love! There's nothing really big to drive him on. Hopefully he has really good ideas!
odds are they are from the 1929 print made with some sound and slightly different camera angles from different shooting takes. the original 1925 print is of much poorer quality byt is still great to watch.
I can't believe Colm Wilkinson was the first stand-in for the Phantom! That is absolutely amazing. He has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard.
Colm Wilkinson IS amazing. I love him as Valjean, but was even more impressed when I bought the Canadian version of Phantom of the Opera to discover that he played the Phantom in there! He has a very distinct voice and was much different from other Phantoms, but I loved it. It's because he's different that he's so amazing!
Oh, and his "Point of No Return" is drool worthy. Any time I listen to him sing it, I completely melt in my seat, hehe. ^_^
This is so incredible and I loved watching this so thanks so much!

Colm Wilkinson is the true ORIGINAL PHANTOM as he sang it in Sydmonton. He wasn't a 'Stand-in'. He couldn't get out of his Les Miserable role.

Actually Lon Chaney was the first( 1925). My only critique us the use of the name Erik, the phantoms real name.
