To all those who are saying it hurts their backs. My guinea use to put himself on his back so I could tickle his belly. It's only bad when they're forced, which clearly this guinea pig isn't, and when they don't have something to support their backs, which this guinea pig does have.

If he hated it, he'd get up. My two don't like their stomachs touched, and they make sure I know it! I've been kicked several times while trying to cut their claws because I have to hold their feet, and they think I'm trying to touch their tummies.

His eyes aren't open wide, so he's pretty relaxed.

Im supprised it hasn't died. They dont like their stomachs being touched and they're more likely to die on their backs -.- He seems so "relaxed" because they cant turn over to bite you. If you want it relaxed then give him/her food and carmly stroke it and cuddle them.

@bazza19981 Sounds like you've got yours from a pet shop, accidental litter or mass producer. Good breeders and certainly showpeople will handle the babies from day 1 to health check em and weigh em every day. They also get some basic show training such as the beginnings of teaching them to stand still. Yours will take persistance and patience. Put them in a room-sized pen and sit in it with food away from you. Gradually put it down closer as they get used to you.

@GeordieTerrier There are other options besides the ones you mentioned. I got my guy from a shelter, his mother was dropped off after some irresponsible owner couldn't be bothered. He was born in the shelter and lived there for 5 months before my son and I found him. He is skittish, has never made a noise and doesnt eat fresh foods at all. Not what we were looking forward to but we love him still.

it is important to buy responsibly, Breeders, rescues and shelters are best ways to go

@Loverleezack I wouldn't want to wish to comment on shelter animals as I've never met any and temperament would vary alot. It would depend a lot on the environment of the previous home/mother's home and on the shelter environment. The shelter may only have given yours concentrate, that's usually why they ignore fresh food. Not everywhere knows that pregnant pigs should always have fresh food so when they give birth babies have summit to nibble safely.

@GeordieTerrier The shelter we got him from don't typically deal with small animals. I am fairly sre he was rarely handled and had never seen vitamin supplements or fresh food. He will come around eventually, I hope! We have convinced him timothy hay is yummy, but that took a while. My greatest wish is people will stop buying animals from pet stores and would be responsible pet owners. Then there wouldn't be any shelter shocked animals

@Loverleezack Some suggestions I can make from my brother's guinea pig. She came from an unknowing background (yes he had two, her sister died at 2 months of a genetic defect). We introduced her to fresh food by nibbling it first then offering her. Strawberries, celery, lemongrass and peppers she ate well. We had to peel grapes though cos she hated the bitter skins.

@guinguin10 to get em this way you have to handle them everyday starting a week or two after they were born, i dont like to pick up mine cause they dont like it, the father lets me stroke his back, ears, head and between the eyes, and the girls let me stroke their heads but only when they are busy eating. i made sure they have lots of rough stone to walk on so i dont have to cut their nails, the rough stone files them down for me.
