Pidgin is good, and so is Trillian. Both of those don't have the malware that AIM has. If you just want to use AIM, I would go with Trillian. If you want a crapload of different usernames for different services, I would go with Pidgin.

I've never used Miranda myself, though.

Freedesktop has a API for universal messaging. I think its name is Empaty. Or an application uses that API.

no way is xp more productive than osx workflow wise.. if people like the way a mac works and they want the functionality of a dock let him have it. why diss someone for wanting a mac desktop. Taskbar more effectve than dock.lol. no way. i dont want to have to run ANY background process like launchie. run 3 diff apps just to get teh functions you want. forget it.get a mac. you dont like the dock. kill it and dont use it.

The best I've found is Trillian. You can log in to AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, and MSN in one client. Very customizable and easy to use.

it turns out i was an idiot. haha. after using a couple addons, ive gotten miranda to do what i want and its waaaaay better than pidgin and is a lot faster and uses way less memory.

if miranda wasnt around, i would still be using pidgin and if that wasnt around i would go back to trillian. but i would never use the default aim client

I use Pidgin with Trillian sound files. Hate the pidgin sounds. For some reason drives me up a wall but luckily thats configurable. Have not tried Miranda and will have to give that a go. I miss Reboot!

the person in the chat who said that you can't install osx on a PC is dead wrong. i know of people who have successfully installed it on a PC. it just takes some tweaking from what i've been told.

OSX86. However, it's not supported by Apple, and not all hardware works with it. Sometimes you will have to patch the kernel. Which kind of sux. Not all processors are supported. A couple of old AMD/Intel processors will work, not all new 64bit ones.

During my time in FreeBSD I totally fell in love with Pidgin, its interface and to how little resources it needs to run multiple "clients" at the same time. Miranda is another wonderful alternative and I have used that one as well, but somehow found it a bit confusing. Both are definitely worth to take a look at.
