After a whole summer of wondering what's in the hatch, we get to see this, with the rousing Mama Cass song behind it. We have no idea what we're seeing, until the explosion at the end, when we realize what we've seen is a full three minutes of lovingly photographed "hatch porn...." I LOVED being "gotcha'd" by these writers! LOST is the ace. Not since M*A*S*H and The Muppet Show of my childhood was I as thoroughly entertained and challenged by a television show.
This opening was really great. You didn't know what was that hatch, and everything that Desmond did, every single step or movement, made you think more about the hatch and about that guy... Simply amazing, Lost.
I like how the show built up the mystery around the hatch so much, and then the instant this season starts, you're treated to this opulent tour of the inside of the hatch...and you don't even know that's what you're seeing!

@craigmebia i agree. the numbers were pretty much extraneous once season 3 started. something changed with the writers, perhaps it was because of the writers strike that occurred around then? whatever the reason, season 2 was perhaps my favorite season of any show EVER, but each subsequent season barely held a fraction of my interest as the one before. the numbers were fascinating and, in my opinion, were abandoned by the writers, with pseudo sci-fi and cliche-ridden dialogue put in its place.

I thought that he was some sort of badass assassin or something, like a middle-eastern or russian guy - power shakes, gives himself medications of some sort, heavy arsenal, elaborate mirror system - it made Desmond look ultra-menacing, like a spy/terrorist cell on the island.
I just love it when the explosion happens. the music is so intense, everything going on is done fast, it's the most epic season opener of any show ever
i wish the show ended halfway through season 5. god, the whole playing house with the dharma initiative was so fucking stupid. And so is all of Season 6. Good god is season 6 terrible entertainment.

So wish Lost wasn't finished... so much was left unanswered and they would still have large audiences if it came back.
This opening is good but I cant help but think it wuda been betta if they opened with the guys still at the top of the hatch, and it wasnt till the very end that we knew what was inside. What TreeLuv is trying to say but expecting everyone to use Dharma Mind Reading experimental techniques; is that they replicated this hatch shot in the Season 6 finale. If I'm not mistaken it's the scene where they pan down from the cave going to the light and you see Locke and Jack's face looking down.

This opening is good but I cant help but think it wuda been betta if they opened with the guys still at the top of the hatch, and it wasnt till the very end that we knew what was inside. Like the whole episode wuda been building up that tension, and they wudnt need that silly scene where Locke decides to take rope and go in himself. They all shuda gone in together

What TreeLuv is trying to say but expecting everyone to use Dharma Mind Reading experimental techniques; is that they replicated this hatch shot in the Season 6 finale. If I'm not mistaken it's the scene where they pan down from the cave going to the light and you see Locke and Jack's face looking down.
