Man what always disappointed me about this band live is Steve always bails out on the real high notes. He rarely was able to sing like he did on the albums.
For those of y'all asking about Robbie "Tambourine Man" Steinhardt, here's a video that better demonstrates his importance in Kansas: watch?v=5ZzLPf_zyKk
robbie should have played violin :( I mean during the 90s, when dave ragsdale was in kansas he played violin during carry on and it sounded awesome :)
@fraroc He played guitar even when Kerry was there for the "There's No Place Like Home" show in Topeka. Watch some of those videos. There are three guitarists at some points.
hegelec, if you knew anything, you'd know the Kansas sound was never successfully recaptured once Robbie left the band. Walsh is coked out of his mind in this video.....does that impress you?
at the 3:30 ish mark, where Robby comes away from the front of the stage.... he had just said hey to a 16 year old me.
The main things I remember about this show (my second ever concert) was the lighting not going right in the drum solo, and Robbie acknowledging my existence (heh) during Carry On!
this is awesome - wish more live video from the 76-78 shows would emerge - those shows were incredible - the 80 footage is closest I have seen, and that skips Monolith tour where we have only dubbed "live" shots
The guy walking around with the tambourine cracks me up. Did they pay this guy or was he just a friend that they let hang out on stage. Holy hair, mustaches and beards!!
Hair and beard guy is named Robbie Steinhardt. He was the violin player for the band, it just so happened that this song didn't have a violin part, but just about every other song did.
You're just being a funny guy aren't you! Ha Ha. No one who is a musician would even ask that question. Leave the comedy to the professionals and stick to your music!
"Hey Robby. Yeah there's really nothing for you to do in this song. You want to jump around like a maniac and shake a tambourine maybe? Will that make you feel better?"
Probably from ganging them into the mike when he jumps. When I saw them up close in Chicago around this time period, he was actually doing handstands on his keyboard while he played. LOL.
Steve was still in Kansas at least a year later when I saw them in Germany 1981. I think Steve left in late 81 or sometime in 82 for a year or two but has been with them ever since.
This is when Don Kirchner was telling Steve he would back him if he went solo. Steve went solo and things just did not happen the way he said they would. Phil Ehart has said if it was not for Don K. he would still be working at Sears.
Nice thing to say about a man who took all their publishing rights. But Phil says he gave them a 30 year career.
Great Voice!! Great Band!! Great Body!! Wow!

What I want to know is where the hell did they show this "Concert" Vid from Texas in 1980? They need to restore it and put it on DVD!

@fraroc Isn't Ragsdale back with them? If so, he's now playing rhythm guitar during this song.

@stalrunner yeah ragsdale is back, and he used to play just violin but now due to the absence of kerry, he plays guitar.

Look at that tambourine man. What did exactly he do in this band? Ran around and shoke the tamborine?
MrDerake 1 year ago
@MrDerake : Please read earlier comments before posting...
"Tambourine Man" is Robbie Steinhardt, the band's violinist and second lead vocalist of the band.

The laser light show before the band arrived was the best I've ever seen. This tour was fantastic. I still have the ticket stub today.

he is the original violinist of the band... he is the responsible of the recognizable sound of kansas....
despite this song is not the best example, of course....

yeah, he is a good violinist. But this vid cracks me up because he is running around with a tambourine trying still everyone's thunder. LOL.

That`s Robby Steinhardt! He`s the violinist in the band, and also took lead vocal on a number of songs (his voice is noticeably lower than Walsh`s).
Just so happens that this song had no violin part, and required a high tenor vocal on the verses. So they gave Robby a tambourine, lol.

Best live version of this song.
GrayLeader2184 3 years ago
Nope, the '76 video is better. Steve's winded and a little off on his intonation here. The vocals are not very well mixed either.
modmusik 3 years ago
Actually the 1976 version is not entirely live:
Steve's vocals were live, but the rest of the band was miming to the music from the album.
