@Symphonyofflowers Sorry I was just making a rather silly joke as it is not the best bit of costume design I have seen. She carries it off well but honestly what was the designer thinking? Take an incredibly beautiful women and rap some tights round her face.
I got your joke, and agree, but what can you do ?? Apart from editing it in a Video Package !!
BTW, I've just come off my son's electric drum kit playing to this - it's awesome (I waited 30 years and for technology to come along to make me sound professional !!).
kate's cotumes/ dancing/ videos were really important and were relevant to her songs. the black strip across her nose represents the sphinx, she's singing as someone who is in love with egypt and only sees it for its treasures and neglects to realise all the poverty and suffering there. it's like she's a fangirl who can't see past her own nose... metaphorically ;p
@bacholerno2 I know this is an old comment, but I liked your analogy of the song... I like how you described it as an Egypt fangirl. Made me giggle, but it makes sense!
Both "Egypt", "Violin" and "The Wedding List" were written and recorded before this show was made. There is a demo version of "Violin" from 1976 and both "Violin" and "Egypt" were performed on her 1979 tour. This show was recorded in October 1979 and broadcast in December 1979. The versions of all those three songs are pretty similar to the album versions, so I guess the recordings were mostly finished when this show was made. But all the songs were recorded especially for the show.

Imogen heap must have copied absolutely everything about this woman.

I think Kate covered her nose wearing a hair-band to emulate the sphinx's look, since it hasn't its nose.

Fantastic but why didn't she wait until her nose bandages were off before she did this video. Had she had a nose job?
WillShakespeare2007 2 years ago
No, it's not a bandage. I guess it's supposed to represent a veil. Remember, the song is about Egypt.

Great song, great performance. the 70s were cool, pretty amazing this was a Christmas special.

Am I right in thinking that this is about someone's obsession with Egypt, despite the fact they've never been there?
Hence the contrast in video between the 'tourist' image of Egypt and the rather scabby reality?
I've no idea what's going on at the end, though!
arosegrowingold 2 years ago 2
arosegrowingold, I don't know, but I suspect you are right. After all, KTB always has something to say, and it's often not obvious at first sight.
I don't think anyone knows what's going on there!
