We like and play Stevie Wonder, and Burt Bacharach's Music, because we have recorded some since 1970 -with our big respect : Maurice, Bernard & I, Michel = THE HOTVILL'S / PARIS

You should disable that stupid "likes/dislikes" section. (Go into edit mode and check out lower left corner.) Whoever put dislike on this great performance is an absolute idiot who does not deserve to even be viewing the imortals of pop music
I'm a big fan of Soul music, but many Burt Bacharach compositions have always chilled me to the bone (in a good way!), particularly the early collaborations with Dionne Warwick - and "Any Day Now" by Chuck Jackson.
I come back to this, after a year, and I'm totally gassed by the duet: Stevie's performance, and Burt's appreciation of it. This, for me, is on a par with Wonder/Bennett, Armstrong/Cash, and Brown/Pavarotti
Yeah I love that video of Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett doing 'For once in my life". Loved the Way Stevie quoted the line "I left my heart" (from 'I left my heart in San Francisco') on his Harmonica solo.
Imagine a TV show featuring a Stevie Wonder instrumental of a Burt Bacharach song. You wouldn't see this much talent in a whole week of prime time nowadays.
@aYsDigital It's really not. It's a 16-hole 280 Hohner chromatic. Most chromatic players have at least one 16 in their arsenal (I have several). Stevie plays different (more expensive) 16's today. But there are much bigger (and different) harmonicas. Chords - triple the size of the one he's using...and bass harmonicas which are also wider.
Standard chromatics are 10, 12 and 16, although there are now 14's available for those who find the 16 superfluous and 10 far too small for jazz. :)
It's so rare when a video showcases not only one talent, but two, and those two being in full bloom. It's a tribute to an amazing melody and its amazing interpreter.
I LOVE HIM HE IS THE GREAREST, I CAN'T FAULT HIM. HE MAKES THE HAIR TINGLE IN MY KNECK. I LOVE HIM. \WATCHING HIM DOING THIS SONG MAKES ME WISH FOR BETTER THINGS.
Shindig used to come on every week on NBC TV . Along with "Hullabaloo" I think on ABC, these were trend setters! Burt Bacharach? do your homework...he is a genius composer and had MANY hits - with Dionne Warwick among many others,. OMG...I hope I can make my sper Chomatic "sing" similara to how Stevie does.
I hate stevie wonder who the hell does he think he is??!!...f*#@#* guy took all the talent in the f%$#@ Universe and left me with nothin!!...LOL....God Bless You Stevie. The day he leaves this planet...I'm checking out too!!....it will be too much of a loss.
Thank you God for sending ur prime musical messengers to ease the hate hurt and anger in this world! Peace and Blessings :-)
who are these guys, lol.....when stevie was new to me i could not stop listening. his voice and musical talent are so rare. he even jams on the drums. if there are angels among us he is one for sure.
This actually was shown in the US as a Burt Bacharach Special called Opus: 3.. It was an interesting and presented as if Burt had met Beethoven (Peter Ustinov) and could introduce him to "today's" music. It included Bette Midler, Stevie and Gilbert O Sullivan.
@travisrules14 Yep me too. Bought a Hohner CX-12 Jazz in Oct 1998 and had a lesson with Philip Achille to sort out the basics. I can now play the main solo and most of the outro solo from 'Isn't she lovely' and the solo from the Eurhythmics' 'There must be an angel' which I learnt from a video on YouTube
@pabslondon just got a super chromonica 270, learning to play some of my jazz charts (i play jazz guitar and bass), so awesome! this is next (well, after some- no- lots of practice)
@travisrules14 Opps In my reply I said 1998 that should be 2008!
I find that Miles Davis stuff translates well onto harmonica. Ive learnt his version of 'Time after time' and the next thing I look at will be his version of 'If I were a bell'
@pabslondon np, i only picked mine up only two months ago, but i am learning more kinda duke ellington stuff, like "it don't mean a thing", (i play that as a feature in my combo!). I also want to learn some toots thiemans stuff, like val passar and bluesette.
@theemusic92 Hmmm... for me only the physical side. I had problems with getting a note on a couple of the lower holes but practice makes perfect. I already played Guitar and bass for 20 yrs before Harmonica so I already had the theory side down.
I use a technique called 'U Tongue where I roll my tongue and direct air to the specific hole in questions. I think Stevie uses 'Pucker'. For more info on Chromatic harmonicas and playing check out the slidemeister website
@theemusic92 chromatic isn't difficult to learn, but as with any musical instrument, difficult to master, depending. Too many think of harmonicas as toys when they're as valid an instrument as any other. Give a listen to Toots or any of Stevie's playing and you can hear brilliance. There are harmonica groups all around the US (and overseas). Go to slidemeister dot com (a web site for all things chromatic), where you'll find tons of players, info, help. :)
Wow........I've loved this classic Burt Bacharach song. From the first time I heard it in the late 60's. And I love the incomparable Stevie Wonder. Like someone else said how could any true lover of music not get chills, goosebump's. When they listen to Stevie's virtuoso performance. Thanks for sharing pabslondon. amory0115.
To me, Stevie is the greatest American musician of all time. And he's one of the greatest human beings the world has ever known. God Bless Him. He's divinely inspired!
i play Diatonic Harmonica, but i got say Stevie Wonder"s tone on the Chromatic is sensational, you can"t teach it, its a feeling you have or you don"t, i suppose it"s what you Yanks call soul... Brilliant!
I saw Stevie Wonder 2 days ago and I can't stop talking about it! I want to shout this from the highest mountain all day long!!! I LOVE STEVIE WONDER!!!!
@pngaia Your 'Who was the white guy' is astonishing since the heading of the video states: STEVIE WONDER & BURT BACHARACH. If you don't know who he is, do a google search. Oscar winner & songwriter of many huge 60's/70's/80's hits with Hal David including ALFIE, Bacharach is alive and well. His career has spanned 60 decades now. 'As of 2006, Bacharach had written 70 Top 40 hits in the US, and 52 Top 40 hits in the UK '. His years-long collaboration with Dionne Warwick alone is legendary.
Epochal. And Bachrach/David got their start in the late '50's, early '60's writing what I believe was state of the art r'n'b at the time ("Any Day Now," "Baby It's You," "Don't Make Me Over"), so one can only imagine what he thought the first time he heard Wonder, the Motown house arrangers, and the Funk Bros. rhythm section, present their version of this, his masterpiece.
Look at his face: He's been (aesthetically) immortalized, and he knows it.
I'm sure he loved this version. After all, the man knew music, but the reason he's above 98% of songwriters is that it was just another nice version of one of his songs. After you've had Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield record several of your songs, been covered by The Beatles, and just accomplished what he did in general, there's no room to become even more immortal. Something as great as this was normal for him.
I can't dispute your observation... but I can't imagine ever being so matter-of-course accepting of numerous great interpretations of my material that I wouldn't be especially flabbergasted by this one, sitting right there in front of him.
Not that this isn't a great version, but when I wrote this it struck me that Bacharach seems like the kind of guy who'd like any version of his songs and feel flattered that he was being covered, even after all his success. The man is a class act in many ways. Beyond that, I can't imagine what it felt like to have people like Stevie, Dionne and Dusty record his songs.
Burt Bacharach is sitting there looking at Stevie like "Oh my God this guy's incredible, I think I like his version better than my own." No seriously, thank God for these two brillant composers and artist who graciously shared their talents for all the world to enjoy. Truly amazing!!
Now, If you had Paul McCartney sitting there with them, you would have the three best song writers of all time! But I have to put Stevie just a hair above the others.
I actually won the oppurtunity to sing live with this "Legend"(Stevie wonder).Something i will cherish and never ever forget for the rest of my life!! If you would like to view it? Look up JOHN PEREIRA SINGING WITH "STEVIE WONDER"..You truly are a wonder:)
yes , this rare performance(and moment in time) is frighteningly delicious....but i'll tell you one thing.....there's a whole lot more o' stevie in it than there is o' jesus....shit...do you really think jesus could blow like that...ain't no way man....sorry ...this is pure stevie...a rare chromatic glimpse into soulville...lol
I think it's kind of hard to do it any justice without the lyrics (see the song in it's full glory on Bacharach's compilation album with Ronald Isley "Here I Am") but I think Stevie Wonder did an excellent job playing it, even though I'd love to hear him sing it. Hell, it impressed Bacharach so that's enough for me.
The creepy white guy has contributed quite a lot to pop music and earned a bit of respect in his lengthy career. Perhaps Bacharach might not come off as so creepy if you revisited some of his other brilliant compositions.
Stunning live performance. Originally released on an LP in 1968 under the pseudonym of Eivets Rednow - work it out yourself - to showcase Stevie's virtuoso instrumental talents.
despues de esto... puedo morir tranquilo!

Not that this isn't a great version, but when I wrote this it struck me that Bacharach seems like the kind of guy who'd like any version of his songs and feel flattered that he was being covered, even after all his success. The man is a class act in many ways. Beyond that, I can't imagine what it felt like to have people like Stevie, Dionne and Dusty record his songs.

man, that was beautiful. I wonder if he's ever done just a harmonica jazz album? If not, he should do one.

Back in 1968 under the alias "Eviets Rednow" which is Stevie Wonder backwards. It included this song!
HowieP 2 years ago
Yes, he did an album under the name "Eivets Rednow". It's a harmonica jazz album, and it features a version of "Alfie". It's hard to find.

UniversalBread 2 years ago
The creepy white guy has contributed quite a lot to pop music and earned a bit of respect in his lengthy career. Perhaps Bacharach might not come off as so creepy if you revisited some of his other brilliant compositions.

Stunning live performance. Originally released on an LP in 1968 under the pseudonym of Eivets Rednow - work it out yourself - to showcase Stevie's virtuoso instrumental talents.
