  • What the name of the piece?

  • @MonomeTechnology That's improvisation. he's making it up on the spot

  • I play mallets and school and I wish we had a vibraphone >:o

I mainly play on glock, but sometimes I play on the xylophone. :P

  • You rock dude!

  • too bad he's a total prick

  • I wonder why his Burton grip technique is so perfect

  • Someone said it sounds like elevator music. Fair enough – but who cares, this is just great harmony, great playing, and a great sound. Forget about the associations and just enjoy the music. On with the show …

  • Burton = crossgrip = Burton... duh

  • Oh it is crossgrip.. I'm trippin

  • Vibes - crossgrip = hard

  • I'm a fetus and I like this

  • this guy is intense

  • Wow! That is a truly special talent - Wonderful music!

  • Gosh this is great music... oh, and just to add to the argument against tall32guy.. I'm 15.

  • NOBODY can play the vibes like Mr.Burton.. He's absolutly amazing!!!!!

  • omg elevator music

  • someone's been practicing his scales

  • I love playing mallets but honestly vibraphone solos sound like elevator music alot...

  • Got a question for any young viewers (as in 25 or younger) of this: do you like the sound of the vibraphone or does it remind you of "old time jazz/big band music", which you don't like? LOL

  • @tall32guy i'm under 25, but what's wrong with old-time jazz/ big band music?

  • @Briksil Because a lot of young people hear music they consider "old" like from the 80's, 70s, etc, and call it "retarded", dumb, or whatever. I'm was checking to see just how commonplace my assumption with that is. hehe

  • @tall32guy i play the vibraphone so...

  • @muffinzized Awesome!!! :)

  • @tall32guy ya its preaty fun im in high school band and im on vibes

  • @tall32guy I'm 18 XP. But It just relaxes me X) Who doesn't like old time jazz O.o?

  • @tall32guy : Well i'm 17 and i love both the sound of the vibes and oldtime jazz/big band music. I doubt many people would look up this video who didnt.

  • Sounds like a casino song in Pokemon.

  • This guy went HAM!

  • Respect

  • He sure is a vibist! (Scrabble teaches me so much)

  • LOOK AT ALL THE CREDENTIALS AND PLAQUES, THIS DUDE OWNS YOUR SOUL.

  • Next year I'm gonna be doin stuff similar to this. But obviously I won't be THIS talented at it

  • Whore.

    It's a compliment.

  • This makes me want to play Transport Tycoon

  • At berklee 1411 boylston office!!! I remember that!!

  • haha i saw my friend hold the mallets like that one time. i thought it was a joke.

  • @Nateisbored Haha!

  • Four Sticks!

  • wow! beautiful!!!!

  • Back in the 80's, Gary Burton had his office in the basement of Berklee College. I once sat outside his door and, unknown to him, listened to him practice for about an hour. Mesmerizing. One of the greatest memories of my life in music.

  • @CribNotes That's pretty inspiring and great to hear someone recognizes even after all this time. Doesn't matter who you are; you (like Gary Burton on the vibraphone here) are what make this world amazing!

  • WOW!

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i didn't know george mcfly was so good at vibes!

  • Great music; It's simple, yet at the same time, calming, relaxing and catchy.

  • Elevator music at its best.<3

  • 11 drummers watched this

  • I wish my dentist was this cool

  • Was this improvised? That would make it even more impressive. But yeah, Gary Burton is epic.

  • Dude, you rock!

  • He is kind of like a god for me ; d

  • dude is a G!

  • @cyrilsnare G sharp, I think.

  • Totally SICK!!!!!

  • Burton RULES!

  • This is how good you can get at improv when you know your theory well, kids!

  • Sick guy!

  • this guy is a bomb he is a master of this instrument, i love his music and his style simply unique!

  • god damn if gary can play

  • that is one classy instrument.

  • is the arrangement of those keys similar to a piano keyboard?

  • I was the first vibraphone player at my school. I wish I could be this good!

  • i wish i could have him follow me around and play everywhere i go

  • @TheNickperrin You mean like on a digital music player such as an iPod or Sony Walkman? ;p

  • @SibSpi no i mean like have him on a cart with a vibraphone and play while someone pulls the cart around where i go.

  • The vibraphone is one of my favorite instruments.

  • This dude is effing amazing! :D I love playing 4 mallets...but I hate when people ask me what instrument I play and later on in the conversation, i find out that the only mallet instrument they're familiar with is xylophone. :/

  • @lithium1661 Ur lucky they know what a xylophone is. When i talk to people the only percussion they've heard of is the triangle...

Thats why I learn piano and french horn and just tell them about that.

However, after becoming the first real person to play the schools vibraphone in its life span, all musos at my school now know what a vibraphone is.

  • @frieddimsims

    Wanna cookie?

  • @chickenthug0 Yes pl0x.

  • Gary's song makes life worth living. For a few minutes. ;)

  • idk what it is about that first little tune, like the first 5 or 10 seconds, but it sounds so darn familiar...sick tune either way. gary, you are a boss. im not a mallet player, im a drummer, but i play mallets too every now n then

  • Amei!

  • Burton grip *cough* *cough* That's Gary Burton *cough* *cough* of the Burton grip *cough*

In case some people don't know... *cough*

  • Don't know who Gary Burton is, but that is some awesome Vibes playing!

  • Wie cool ist das denn....Give it away Gary.....

  • Chick Corea & Gary Burton albums are brilliant

  • Haha I like how he's in an office which randomly has a vibraphone :-D

  • Who....The....HELL...hit the dislike button. has to be 10 stone deaf folks. (and by that I mean sTONE deaf)

  • Guitars are for queers. Vibraphones are for pimps.

  • @sollidsnake1

    are you an idiot?

  • @dpope61 ummm no, i dedicate my life to the vibraphone

  • @sollidsnake1 you're an idiot

  • @sollidsnake1 If you can do it, you should thank Gary Burton then...

  • .......Speechless

  • how could there be 10 dislikes?

  • THE GOD OF VIBES WOOT

  • Comment removed

  • Sure, but can he play "Those Endearing Young Charms" without blowing up?

  • Ever hear of irony?

  • @TheophagousMonkey That really didn't sound ironic...

Anyway. Irony is a hard thing to express on the interwebs.

  • @mrmadman86 Aside from the usual, misconstrued definition, irony is just another word for sarcasm.

  • @jakethepianist And why is that relevant to this discussion?

  • @mrmadman86 Quote:

    "That really didn't sound ironic..."

    It was sarcasm.

  • @jakethepianist Well, the same goes for sarcasm. When you don't know the guy, can't hear him, can't see him, statements like that could easily be misunderstood if it's not VERY obvious that it's irony or sarcasm.

  • @mrmadman86 As proves your point, I misinterpreted your comment. I assumed that you were saying the equivalent of, "What? That's not irony!". Sorry. XP

  • Rushing like a freshman. This is an incredibly solipsistic solo.

  • @TheophagousMonkey then you truly can never grasp the concept of jazz

  • @TheophagousMonkey What did you find solipsistic about it?

  • Amazing..sounds so laid back and cool, but many years of excellent went into what this man does.

  • epic pure epic dude it would be an honor if u would tell us your seceret.

  • He's got skills.

  • name of the solo or is this just improv?

  • haha i play the vibraphone inna my school band but i aint gunna be this good.. i want to learn

  • OH YEAH!

  • we saw him live in Cologne the other day, he was amazing :)

  • Loved it!

  • Businessman by day.... VIBE SOLOIST BY NIGHT.

  • @birdeeboo Not exactly, he's been nominated for 15 grammy's and has one 6. I'd say being a vibraphonist qualifies as being his full time job.

  • @birdeeboo hahahahahahahha! this post is twice as funny whilst listning to the music

  • @birdeeboo Give him a Glock and he's FBI. Amazing player!

  • @birdeeboo is he really?

  • is that mr. rogers???

  • @309EVT Mr.Rogers is hotter.

  • I have a question that I'm really curious to know the answer to, to all the young people here (younger than 23): do you think the vibraphone is an "old-sounding" instrument that reminds you of 50's and 60's stuff, and therefore is something you don't like? I know it's an odd question; I am just curious to know. :)

  • @tall32guy Im 15

I absolutely freaking love the Vibraphone and am learning A Vision in a Dream, and will soon be getting Green Lake.

    Gary Burtons a beast.

  • @tall32guy I like it...but I don't dislike any instrument in particular, and mine isn't the 'popular' opinion. (I also like accordion, organ and Hammond organ)

  • This is the one and only mother of all vibraphone-players :)

  • Guess not, but he is the mother of all vibraphone-players. Not just any office-rat :)

  • This is the best sounding instrument in the whole world in my opinion. My God, this guy is a master.

  • i'm just now getting used to his grip instead of stevens as a vibe player i think for vibes it is more beneficial

  • love playing with four mallets other than the fact it destroys my hands

  • A genius at work

  • I am a jazz kind of a guy and Gary helped me understand it when I was first intoduced to it when Gary did a workshop at Pensacola Jr College and I went to hear him talk about music. He is a really bright guy. I have never listed to jazz in the samy way since.

    Thanks Gary!

  • Great vibes!

  • this is so cool!!!!!!!!!

  • a relax time in the office xD

  • Imagine this guy being the dean of your conservatory (Berklee)! Totally cool, and a great collaborator with other musicians to boot. Arguably the greatest vibes man ever. This looks like he's set up in his office. Sure beats having a desk there!

  • Is he a god? Or does he just practice alot..

  • ah-mazing!

    ... i didn't think that was even possible =3

  • I'd give up the piano anyDAY for the vibraphone..!

  • have a duel with joe locke!!

  • I must be getting old- I think people using the word "gangsta" to describe things they like are idiots.

    What a wonderful world!

  • Is this what all decent chaps do in their spare time? nice.

  • THATS GANGSTA!!! AHAHAH

  • thats sickkk!!

  • nice job!

  • pretty amazing!

  • Brilliant fluidity! Incidentally, with all due respect you can hear some of this great style in a video game (shocking, eh?) Look up "Mario Vs. Donkey Kong" Odd comparison, but it brings a smile to my face seeing this musical essence as far reaching as that medium!

  • dammit this man is so good

  • Gary Burton is gangsta.

  • great!! great!!! it's awesome!!

  • God has arrived.

  • If I had an ice cream van, it would sound like that.

  • Vibraphone is the ultimate chill instrument

  • Awsom.....I can't say anything more...

  • If I could do that I'd never leave the house.

  • YESS!!!

    Vibetastic

  • @MrLlamaPro

    4) and of course the sound is completely different, and there's no sustain pedal on the xylophone

there are more differences, but you get the idea. the other mallet instruments are even more different.

getting a xylophone could definitely be a good idea, since it'll get you used to the mallet technique, making the switch to vibes easier.

  • @MrLlamaPro

despite their similarities as keyboard instruments, i honestly must say they're all completely different to play on.

    re: vibraphone vs. xylophone

    1) depending on mallet choice, xylophone keys rebound different

    2) vibraphone key width is typically larger than that of a xylophone, and usually the keys aren't as far apart

    3) xylophones' "black keys" are elevated, while on the vibraphone they're almost always not

  • if gary was any sicker he would need a doctor.
