I watched it again, and yahhh, the time passing when Hagman stopped and when he got hit is about a half a second. Witt was apparently committed to a shoulder check when Hagman put on the breaks. It's like touching the left shoulder of someone while they unexpectedly shift their body and you touch their right shoulder as a result, and... and.... and..... zzzzZZzzZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......

Witt has PLENTY of room to skate around Hagman. He has plenty of balance, and makes a concerted effort to stick his arm out.
When you avoid a collision, you either skate around him (which Witt had plenty of room and space to do) or you put your hands out...NOT stick your elbow out to the left in order to make contact!
You can see Witt raise his arms and throw his weight forward there, while Hagman reacts pretty much as if to an ordinary check attempt. But it's still hard to tell whether it was intentional, or whether Witt is such a slowpoke that he was aiming for center mass to center mass, but mistimed by a body's width. I'm not a great believer in accidents, though. In either case, the proper job for him in the stadium would be selling hotdogs rather than anything on the ice.

Witt has PLENTY of room to skate around Hagman. He has plenty of balance, and makes a concerted effort to stick his arm out.
When you avoid a collision, you either skate around him (which Witt had plenty of room and space to do) or you put your hands out...NOT stick your elbow out to the left in order to make contact!

You can see Witt raise his arms and throw his weight forward there, while Hagman reacts pretty much as if to an ordinary check attempt. But it's still hard to tell whether it was intentional, or whether Witt is such a slowpoke that he was aiming for center mass to center mass, but mistimed by a body's width. I'm not a great believer in accidents, though. In either case, the proper job for him in the stadium would be selling hotdogs rather than anything on the ice.
