This film is just excellent! I somehow let it get by me when it first came out and only recently have discovered. Elina Lowensohn's performance is awesome, one of the best vampire performances ever. And Peter Fonda as a bicycle-riding Van Helsing is...well, wacky, just the kind of character one would expect from a film which appears to be so heavily influenced by David Lynch. This film has something for everyone...tributes to the old horror films, lesbian vampire action (yeah!), and humor.
This movie is a remake of an old horror film called "Dracula's Daughter" (1936) and the similarities are too striking to simply to be an influence. "Nadja" is a beautiful and highly recommended movie. It is suprising the movie is not more widely known. I discovered it by accident during my reading of reviews in a Leonard Maltin's movie book. His favorable review led me to the movie. I bought it and it has been one of favorite 1990's horror films since then.
Because we're cheapskates... silly. I just found it on amazon for $2.28, I'll buy it and post it and save the other cheapskates $2 just to illustrate just how cheap we truly are.
1994, was a great year, was the year of Pulp Fiction, the year of Dummy of Portishead(the song Roads apears in the film Nadja), was the year of Kurt Cobain´s dead...Bill Clinton became in president...Was a Year of Rupture...was a great year...I was 10
I saw this at the Angelica theatre in New York in 1995. I thought it was the most trippy, far-out film I'd ever seen. I think it's astonishing when you're watching something shot at night, but you can stil see all the buildings and streets.
It was ironic at the time, because if you walked around Manhattan at night you were bound to encounter some strange characters.
You know, being a Romanian vampire isn't such a bad thing, being one whose family is descendent from Vlad himself (no kidding). If you liked Nadja, you may also like Mike Figgis's "Hotel."
This 'indie' film with David Lynch influences (Executive Producer credit) is one of the most original and exceptionally textured vampire treatments ou there. Uses the Fischer-Price Pixelvision camera for certain scenes very effectively.

Damn this film is awesome, nearly made bad by its indie kid pretentiousness, but not enough too spoil it. Buy it now.
