My dad used to catch turtles out of the creek and ponds. He never used gloves or any kind of lure or bait. He would stick his closed fist back in the mud and feel for the notches on the turtle's back. He knew if the notches ran a certain way which end the head was on. He would grab them behind the head. Turtle meat was considered a delicacy in our part of the country as were frog legs. Now, people pay outrageous prices for what we, in Eastern Ky, had for free. I say, "Go, Turtle Man, Go!"

The Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrickenys temminckii) status is under review according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Common Snapping Turtle, Chelydra serpentina, isn't on a protected or endangered species list. From what I've seen & read of the Turtle Man, he only hunts the Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) during the designated hunting season.
P.S. I think it's great he's able to do what he enjoys doing!
