Thanks so much! I had a hard drive failure and went 15 days without putting the key in, installing software and updates the whole time. It wasn't until I went to put the key in for upgrade that I realized that since it was a new HD the OS would have no proof of my old vista install. Saved me days of configuration, man, thanks!
Thanks so much for this video. I had a hard drive mechanical fail and had to re-install to a new hard drive. I waited 15 days of getting software on there not thinking about the absence of an OS windows for it to update to, since it was a fresh new hd. Saved me at least 3 days of work! Thanks!
Excellent! You saved me 4 hours. My daughter has a Dell Notebook loaded with a Vista Pro infected with Virus and I deleted the partition and reformatted the disk including the DELL restore partition. I installed the Windows 7 upgrade and could not activate since the original Windows was not present.
Awesome, really, thanks so much. I can't believe MS are pulling this sort of tactic on the Win7 early adopters who upgraded. My HD died, got a new one and did a clean install. Was looking at having to delete current install, reload XP, then upgrade to Win7.... sigh.
First time I tried to activate, they refused to activate me on the phone.
Followed this video, rebooted, tried to activate online. Failed to do so, but this time I could activate over the phone!!
I've instal my vista 32 bits over with windows 764bits on my hard disk (custum advanced) !! but can i turn back to my old vista ? i've important files on it ! and when i look to my HDD ( c:) i see that is half full ... i want to format but windows say: you can't format you're HDD with windows on it ,...
@Citabria007 The upgrade disk allows you to perform an install on a clean drive, but the CD key won't let you activate it. This video shows you how to activate it anyway.
Thank you SO MUCH for this! I thought I was going to have to go through the hassle of reinstalling XP and installing 7 again! Saved my bacon. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I did a clean install of Windows 7 using the upgrade disk and got the error message when I tried to activate the key online. I followed your video and was able to successfully activate the key.
Question: I am building a new pc and I have a upgrade disk for windows 7. Can I use the upgrade disk and when it asks for the cd key use my vista software key from my other computer?
hey if i do this registry change to activate windows 7, do i need to have XP (what i now have) on my HDD or can i do this to activate windows on a *brand new* hdd?
i navigated to my OOBE folder in the registry, but there are no keys listed to in that folder. I have windows vista 32-bit (not pirated) I don't have a boot CD though because windows was installed when I bought my computer. What should I do? Also, can I install windows 7 64bit on a new clean partition with the upgrade CD?
I am using a Fujitsu Scaleo P with AMD 64 Athlon CPU and NVidia 8400 GS graphics card and got Windows XP SP3 OS installed and changed the logon screen, bootscreen visual style e.t.c. to Windows 7 theme with a transformation pack I found on the Internet.
What is better of the following two options? To have a computer with Windows XP SP3 with Windows 7 looks or have a computer with windows 7 ultimate installed? I guess most think Windows 7 is much better on looks and performance, but some of the visual effects take too much memory, about 60-70%. Those can be deleted, but Windows XP has the System Restore feature while Windows 7 does not have it on Home Edition and only at the advanced pack as far as what I have read at Microsoft website.
This may sound silly, but how do I get to this point in the install? I am installing on a bare drive. I am wondering how I should install from the upgrade disk. Do I do custom install? I have heard that I should not put in my product key when first prompted, but I don't know if I can get around it. I hope this question was worded logically enough for someone to understand. Thank you in advance.
Works perfectly!!!!!! idiots from bestbuy told me after the new hardrive was installed all i had to do was install my upgrade disc and wait the 30 days and then key in the product key......did not work but. ur directions worked beautifully!!!!! thanks
Will this work if I used the Windows 7 upgrade key previously and then reformatted that harddrive to use the upgrade media as a clean install disc? WIll it not let me use that key when it comes time to activate in on the reformatted drive after doing this trick in your video??? Thanks a bunch!
small question if u do this for having windows vista home premium currently installed and trying to get windows 7 professional is it the same concept or different
@MechaNintendoMast but with this, i did a clean install, 1 regedit and 1 cmd command and it works like full. sounds like alot better then a double install, alot less time too
@drewitt8 I understand, but I have people in my family who I wouldn't dare tell to use regedit. It safer to do a double install, for them so they won't possiblely mess anything up.
Ok, I booted from disc again since I could never find "activate windows" and it actually booted??? I also in my efforts tried the command prompt slmg /rearm (i think i spelled it right?) if that makes a diff ???
Hey um I was doing a full factory restore with windows vista and it crashed! Now windows vista starts up with nothing but a black screen and a mouse. Can I still upgrade to windows 7? Right now i'm using windows 7 enterprise trial and all the files from vista transfered over so would it work? And if it worked would I be able to do a "clean install"?
Fooling around in the registry will NOT "hose your machine". It could, at worst, make your machine unbootable (but certainly not with this tweak). And since the people you are talking to are installing an OS, all they'd have to do is re-install it. So, just back-up.
i get this message trying to upgrade 32 bit to 64 bit and for the last time my Computer IS compatible ive been asked that too many times i used 5 programs they all say yes but i cant even do a clean install it says this when i run setup The Version of this file is not compatible with the version if windows you are running. Check your computer's system info to see whether you need x86orx64 version of the program, and then contact the software publisher..!!
Thank You!!!!!!!!! Worked great I had vista 32 bit bought 64 bit in my Universities bookstore and worked like a charm it's soooo easy. I personally have two hardrives and keep all my files on one and put the os on the other so it makes it really easy to change up my operating system with I want
@zimdooga How many Universities do you got? Asking because "universities" is plural...not possessive, which means your university probably made a mistake accepting you, since you don't know how to write " my university's"....because, also "university" does NOT need to be capitalized...unless you were writing it as a proper name, like "Syracuse University". You're welcome.
Will this cause any negative side effects down the road with Windows Updates or anything like that? What happened with me is that I tried to upgrade Vista, but it wouldn't boot, so I formatted my computer and then installed Windows 7 upgrade edition, but now I can't activate it because there was no Windows OS on my hard drive.
By doing this I take it you get around the restriction where installing 7 over XP/Vista may invalidate the old CD-Key like Vista did? I'm building a new desktop with access to the upgrade version, but I'd rather not invalidate my XP if at all possible.
If I used the Upgrade disk and this method, however possibly unethical, would it allow me to retain my XP on my laptop and have 7 on my desktop, or does 7 installation include entering an XP Product key?
This wont do anything to your XP key. All this does is force windows to accept the cd key entered. At no point in the installation process does it require you to enter your xp cd key. Think of it like doing a full install and using an upgrade cd key. This method will wipe everything from your system as it starts with a clean install. This is only the activation portion of it.
@flipmode00 use timernuke it disables the activation so u dont have to activate it but u have windows 7 no trial ill gove the download link if u want pm back u want it
@anubis1055 Do you know of a method to upgrade from XP to 7 without losing any files and without external hardware? Except for a CD/mem stick at most?

You don't have to edit the registry
Do the clean install but don't activate yet.
When everythings done put the disk in again and do a upgrade install.
Now activate.
You'll fool windows since it'll see another os already on the hard drive.
MechaNintendoMast 1 year ago
@MechaNintendoMast This works, it's what I did - much easier than editing the registry
TobyMakins95 1 year ago
@MechaNintendoMast Except that defeats the whole, clean install is better...
drewitt8 1 year ago
@drewitt8
Yeah but it will save you a lot of money if you are will to do the trick. ( assuming you don't have a OS on your hard drive)
Besides, if you already have an OS on the hard drive and you do the clean install, you wouldn't need to do the trick with the upgrade disc anyway.
