What happens if you reverse the holes to high on the outside and low on the inside. I expect the air entering would be preheated as the fire got hotter. The preheated air would gassify the wood improving efficiency.
I would kill to know who performed the song you played in this video. Only one bad thing...the music was so damned good, I couldn't concentrate on the instructions. Great video!
Great workmanship, bad science. It takes 5 times as much air to burn the Woodgas as to make it, so make top holes in this ratio. The tall flames above can in the video show not enough secondary air. Also, the pot holder can then hold pot an inch away from stove, not six inches as shown. Tom Reed, inventor of wood gas stoves about 1985.
thats very nice , good job man i love seeing that people still have a sense of ingenuity and improvisation, keep up the good work. also.. you know i gotta ask.. whats the song?
Very nice! I have watched a few videos of small woodgas stoves and not meaning to put anyone else down yours is by far the best. Thanks for posting its a very nice stove. Bandages for sale call Jim on ......
That is one of the most practical stoves I have ever seen you have to consider the weight of the fuel of the other guys stove and you very well are probably well under their stoves weght. I doubt you go in the bush with just one cooking method you probably carry some of those little white fuel cubes. Grat video.
The video is nice but but my goodness the music is rather much I would rather have the maker talk thru the step than listen to peruvian elevator music
@symaklon I look at the bright side of it, I hope that the burns were caused to cauterize the cuts! As for getting a finger hammered on well even I do that and I like the video but than again Im bias. LOL
@morgman77 Thank you! The stove works well, and its a tough li'l bugger too. two months on a trail and it was the only stove used and is ready to go again. Thanks for your input and for watching! Take care!
@19wael96 Anyone with an opinion may comment good or bad would prefer it to be constructive criticism but most of the time if is bad it is someone who is just hiding behind a User Name wanting to stir something up. I just take it with a grain of salt. Thank you for watching and hope it helped you gain an idea, take care.
@NCHiker1970 constructive criticism is an oxymoron like "peace force" but I was waiting for the gas part to get installed. I was wondering if it was compact when stowed away, no use if it doesn't pack down into a smaller space if I'm looking to bug out.
thank you soo much for making that vid.. i live in Ukriane i will build this one for poor people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i will try to use straw since we have a lot of it and its dry....
What is this music?? I keep watching these videos and they all have the same kind of music... It must be the whole nature thing. Although this sounds like the music out of Braveheart. Thanks for the video.
@jalfrado I did it this way because not all people have those type of can openers. Make it so everyone can build one of their own using common tools. But your right a side cutter may be safer.
Someting that helps for the step at 2:32 ( the straight cut around can) is to get some books stacked to the right height beside the can on a flat surface, hold the razor against the books and score the can by spinning it against the blade, this easily makes a perfect guide to cut the can better.
I'm lovin this idea, it's cheap and easy XP and works great.
Eventually, I want to add bells & whistles: insulation of the burn chamber to retain heat (possibly, but at this scale it might not matter)
Taller height of insulated burn/draft chimney above the secondary holes. Contain the heat released in secondary combustion and trap it to bring it straight to the working surface, without losing anything to surrounding air.
Pot skirt, to keep that energy close to the working surface longer.
This vid inspired me to try on a woodgas stove last summer. Sat at the river in the evening, a few beers and a can of soup(wich i emptied using my little alcohol stove ;)) and a smaller can i brought with me. Just a pincher for the holes, exactor knife and some pliers.
It was somewhat hard work on the cans with just this tools with me. But was really a pleasure making a working stove out of what most ppl just throw away.
@KoN312 You know that is something that makes these videos worth the time and effort. When people like yourself build one for yourself and make use of it. Thats the wonderful part of it all! Great job!!!!
Making stoves is a nice hobby and a good way of useful recycling. But if u do it outside like i did, ppl sometimes look weird and think u r crazy. Sitting on a stone and pinching holes into a can :) But who cares.. they should mind their own business.
By the way, I just received the CD of Celtic Flutes from which this videos song is from. The song is called "Cape Clear" and the entire album is just fantastic. Incidentally I just received a Flint striker that I purchased on eBay from a seller named buy2eze. The item description is:
NEW SWEDISH FIRE STEEL & US P-38 ~ 4 UR SURVIVIAL KIT. It is just amazing! I would put this against the heavier more expensive flint strikers and by far it is the best I've seen. I think it is a real find!
Glad your enjoying the CD! I too have ordered the fire steels off ebay for little to nothing and handed them out to my nephews and added them to thier survival kits after showing them how they are used.
@NCHiker1970 i want to go to my shed right now but its freezing ,i am building a wood buring stove from old gas bottles ,its 97% finished ive had it fired up but i am having problems with the flu as the one i was using was to smallbut great job you made of that little wood burner
@bryncomeaux Look at it this way...Insults, cussing, or racism are not what these videos are about. Videos I have made are mostly for DIY projects and none of those things are needed to teach folk. As for peaceful living...Im still working on that one, but Im getting closer to it. Take care and thank you for watching and commenting!
Brilliant job! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have to watch several times but I'll get it. I find the music distracting...in a good way though...I start daydreaming and forget that I am suppose to be paying attention :>) Great post!
I wouldn't go as far as brilliant, but thank you for the compliment anyhow! Good ideas deserve to be shared, Im here on youtube to learn and teach. turn down the volume an pay attention LOL would like to see your finished product. I found that tent stakes and wire wrapped around the stove to hold them in place make a better pot stand and stove stablizer and they aid in air flow if you lift the stove up on them. Good luck in your building process!
Beautiful video & beautiful stove! Nice metal work! Thanx for the Inspiration! Could be Andy Warhol Soup Cans! Free Heat from garbage! It doesn't get any better than this. Keep it simple, keep it small! All about the Hearth!
No better way to recycle then to experiment! I have field tested this and had great luck with it, I changed out the potstand and added tent stakes and wire wrapped around for a larger pot and had better luck cooking and boiling water! Thanks for the compliment and comment!
What I cannot pay tribute to my Celtic background? Personally this sort of music relaxes me after a bad day! Plus it is about some of the only music that does not get deleted by youtube!
Nice stove and wind screen. It's amazing how long soup and vegetable cans last. All of the wood stoves I've built have had hundreds of burns and are still functional with no structural problems. That includes my forced air stoves.
I have always had great luck with the vegetable cans and soup cans. I found that painting them allows longer life as well. Inside and out! First burn after painting is wise to just do a burn without cooking.
THanks for the compliment, as for the celtic flutes album I will have to dig it out to find out as the names are not on the albulm list here on my computer, I wil find out though and then let you know!
Sorry Buddy - been watching your videos and his regarding how to build one of these stoves (adapting it for use on a cruising sailboat for extending cruising along the Florida Emerald Coast). We go for 2+ week jaunts and have a grand time doing so. This type of stove that contains the fire is perfect for beach cooking as well as cooking from the cockpit stern rail while at anchor. The music would be great to play at dusk/dawn and have it echo across the water while at anchor. . . :-)
No problem. Would love to see your stove and how you use it. The Cruise sounds like a blast! Your right on with the music.... I had this music with me at the end of a hike watching the sun go down over the mountains while sitting atop a rock wall. That to me is true peace!

Thanks Hiram! So far I have done about 8 burns all around 45 minutes each and there has been no problems as of yet. I painted the inside and the outside as Josh recommended. We shall see if that helps out.
Thanks for sharing the stove build with us. I own about a dozen alcohol stoves that I bought and I also made three stoves myself. I've been watching videos about these wood stoves and this is by far the best homemade one.

Great minds think alike LOL! I had considered painting it. Someone once said to paint the inside with high temp paint... Not sure if I should. Thanks for the comment and compliment Josh!
I think I am going to go that route, One of my friends here wanted me to coat the outside of the burn chamber in JB Weld, but the painting idea sounds like a better way to go. Thanks Josh!
Really like the design and construction. Gonna have to try this version out. Thanks!

Try using a finer mesh screen in the middle, it will keep the flame inside the stove.

I'm not understanding the term 'wood gas' - is it because the stove resembles a gas stove or is there gas use involved?
kathberry8 1 year ago
@kathberry8 The gas part is in the smoke put off by the wood. It's unused volatiles within the burning process.

Thanks! The idea was to build one for solo hiking plus to show how easy these are to build.

Thanks Ed! I figure why show how to build a potstand when everyone has their own way of making one.

Cool stove,Have you tried a gas wick yet???
Do you think you could make a vid of this stove in use?
Well done 5/5

Thought about adding a wick but finding a smaller can is the problem, and I will make a video of it once I get the other camera back.

Can't wait to see that and maybe you could use the bottom of a budlite can for a wick if that's thin enough or maybe a thin deodorant can!!!

I am thinking about using a tomatoe paste can. Guess that means I will be having spaggetti here in the near future.

Now, after a burn or two, paint it with high temp stove paint. It should last a good number of burns. Sweet job, Drak! Peace.

Great minds think alike LOL! I had considered painting it. Someone once said to paint the inside with high temp paint... Not sure if I should. Thanks for the comment and compliment Josh!

I would take her apart and paint her inside and out. That, I think, would be the best idea for durability. Just an idea. Peace, Drak!

I think I am going to go that route, One of my friends here wanted me to coat the outside of the burn chamber in JB Weld, but the painting idea sounds like a better way to go. Thanks Josh!
