@wild50gunner: Perhaps in a "Farenheit 451" world where all books are memorized by one person and then passed on to one other person who memorizes the original verbatim, that would be true. Alas, it's not. I'll guarantee that you haven't memorized your favorite book, or likely even a passage from it, because you have it in text. As you note, a book is a tool for the transmission of information, but when you destroy a book, you block future transmissions of that information.

I grew up poor, and due to the pathetically substandard nature of modern American public schools (as demonstrated by this video) I am self taught. Before the internet, that meant books. Nearly every book I read growing up I got second hand. If the owner can't use them, they should sell them or give them away. I can't see destroying them as anything other than sloth or malevolence.
