It has never been properly explained why johnny Owens corner never pulled him from this fight! They had chance after chance! After the first knockdown in round 9 it was obvious that he was never going to last the full 12 rounds! They could have pulled him in round 10, they didnt! And why they didnt throw the towel in after that first knockdown in 12 is really beyond belief! R.I.P Johnny Owen
Funny that they don't want the grave shown. 50 million people have walked past Elvis' grave while touring graceland.
I'm not trying to be mean but a fighter being victimized by a blood clot in the brain doesn't make someone a great man. He was a fine fighter and very courageous but i view his death as a freak reality of his sport not something reflective of his character as a man overall.
@shire2005 Perhaps you should take the time to research the man a bit before commenting. He was by all accounts a great person. If you read the book 'The Big If', it's very clear that he was a wonderful person.
my proudest moment was when johnny walked down those rusted steps to the ring and they were peltin him and pullin him and he didnt flinch.... like hes always done.. he was a brave.. brave boy...
Johnny Owen is up there with the greats........Unfort i am 24 and never saw him fight and really wish i could and also met him "Thank you very much to you fans for making this possible because without you i wouldnt be employed".....More boxers should say that, you are up there now with Jimmy Wilde, Freddie Welsh etc............RIP Johnny Owen wether i knew you or not you have saved alot of lives and are a genuine Legend...
Why didnt his corner throw the towel in when he went down for the first time in the 12th? It was obvious to everyone that Johnny was dead on his feet! It seems that Johnny had to continue fighting for many others and not himself. A very brave young man, a fantastic boxer! R.I.P
I have just been reading a book about Johnny Owen called The Big If which is a sad but inspiring read. Johnny Owen was such a dedicated athlete and a wonderful person, at christmas he used to buy presents for his gym mates children.
Verguenza sobre aquellos fans que arrojaron orine al gran CAMPEON de wales JOHNNY OWEN! Many times men can not reconized a true warrior, the bionic bantam deserved the whole world respect, he showed what the true champion is made, courage, honor, humility. Thanks Johnny for your display of tenacity, perseverance.
i dont think it was any1s fault it was just a tragedy also he had a paper thin skull that nobody knew cos in those days u didnt hav ta hav a brain scan to get a pro license that was introduced because of johnnys death. r.i.p johnny = legend
I was 10 when I saw this fight. Johnny Ower really were a great warrior. He lost his life ... and Lupe Pintor too. He weren´t the same boxer after this fight. He were really sorry about Owen´s destinity. Greetings and honour for great Owen from Mexico.
You Iam a boxing fan,but I never wtch this fight, but I remember watching about his death on the news. For what I can see on this video aside of being a boxer he was a good Man or a great Human being. thanks for this video.
So many people in the Mexican- American community know of this fight because the lose of Johnny also affected latinos. The pain was felt here as it was in Wales. I always think of what happened to Johnny whenever I pass by the Olympic auditorium. Mexicans have so much respect for Johnny not just for the great fighter that he was, but because he was so humble and good-hearted.
Its so sad because even though he was knocked down twice in the last two rds he didn`t look seriously hurt.I remember the news of him at that time. But it could of happened to his opponent as is the nature of the sport.
Johnny Owen lives in many boxing fans' minds and hearts in the sportmanship manner. Back then, it came in the news that some time before the fight, Lupe Pintor even expressed that Owen was too slim too fight him. He probably made the required weight but I wish his manager had listened to Pintor and had cancelled the fight. In Mexico, we regret the loss of such a fine person and a good boxer as Johnny Owen was. Many of us still mourn and cry when we remember the Great Johnny Owen.
What a great little fighter ! The fact that this man is still talked about today says it all really doesn't it ? R.I.P Johnny. You have your dad with you now...............Although , after watching the doco where he went and met Lupe Pintor and his family, I honestly beleive you were never apart!
I remember watching this on Faces of Death when I was 8 or 9 years old, I felt truly sorry for him that time but now I'm grown up and I having just watched this vid, no longer do I feel sorry but proud of Johnny. What a great man with such a great heart!
Johnny, if your reading this in some way, you've touched a lot of people, including me. Your memory will live on as a great Welsh fighter. Such a great example of the strong spirit of the Welsh people.
Well said jwebb. Johnny was a true fighting man with the heart of a lion. Johnny will always be remembered a true Welsh fighting hero that exempfied the tough spirit of the proud Welsh nation.

im sorry cdnpoppa where exactly does god come into this story? I admire Johnny Owen's heart and spirit but im getting a bit sick of religious people trying to wedge god into the equation. god does not work in mysterious ways it was just a tradgedy that happened and a mythical being in the sky played no part in it. People should look at Johns story and respect him for who he was ; a guy who gave 100% in everything he did
I really cannot say I agree with you there. Johnny WAS a religious man and it is only befitting that his eulogies are also in the same vein. Please keep your athiest opinions to yourself, they have no place here.
im sorry do you own these boards starryian007?,i have read Johnnys autobiography and Johnny was not an avid church-goer but quite simply an all round gentleman who respected the church but wasnt exactly a religious man like im guessing you are, stop bringing religions into this as your detracting from what a 1 in a million person Johnny was with you idiotic religious ramblings, this story is about Johnny not God
You're spot on mate.Just gettin to THAT round n I'm dreading turnin the pages even tho it's a magnificent book.Every boxer who died in the ring was special to someone but there's something bout John that makes me think he was too good for this world.Hope him and his Dad are together and I wish Lupe Pintor all the best.John was a silent warrior who went out on his sword like all true warriors do.If anyone wants to find out what a true gentleman he was they should read The Big If.R.I.P John Owens.
A monument was erected in honor of Owens and Lupe Pintor was there with this wife at the invitation of the Owens family... nice touch, a great boxer with a lot of heart...

Johnny Owen was the bravest fighter I have ever seen in my life. I was 12 years old when he had the Pintor fight and have never forgotten coming home from school every day and askng my Dad if there had been any news on his condition. My son Owen was named after him and whens hes old enough to understand I will tell him about the brave fighting man that he is named after.
That's so great to hear your son is named after Johnny. I think Johhny would have been very proud. It is a pity that there are not more people in the world with as much courage, dedication and heart as Johnny Owen had. I am sure your son will grow up with the same great qualities as Johnny.
i remember that fatal fight against Lupe Pintor i was like 9 years old i as a mexican believe that this is a beatiful tribute to a great fighter Johnny Owen rest in peace
im a boxer a id love 2 c the statue a vid of johnny first made me start .. and now im 25 and had 26 and 0 as a pro . it was the first ever fight i saw. RIP JOHNNY
I would prefer that images of John's grave are NOT shown here; I just think that YouTube is not an appropriate forum for this. If anyone wants to see images of John's grave I will put pics on my website (temporarily) for you to see. You can email me at adminATjohnnyowenDOTcomDOT for the link.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for posting such wonderful comments and for remembering John so fondly.
Thanks Gary for your help. If anyone has problems with the email address in Johnny`s brother`s message it`s because we had problems posting it here and had to alter it so it went through... PM me and I will send it to you.

i will be visiting his grave on the 23rd of this month , as i do every year, i could post some pictures on here if anyone would like to see them of the grave, or would that be disrespectful do you think? please share your views with me . thanks
I visit Johnny`s grave several times a year as he is very special to me, not for his fighting but for the man himself!. I have photos of his grave on my website with permission but I always remove identifying features... there are people who will seek to destroy or vandalise and if it was posted online it will be easy to recognise, Just my thoughts!. I will be visiting Johnny`s and Dick`s grave the saturday before Christmas as always.
more thoughts on your idea... it would be best to consult his family first out of respect, the grave after all is a sacred place for them to grieve both their loved ones, it`s not a publicity showpiece!
I have negative vibes about this and feel you should not do anything without first at least asking, I can contact his family and point them in the direction of this thread for you if neccessary!
yes please , i have no way of contacting his family . it was just for like people abroad who are fans who will never have the chance to visit the grave . thanks again
I contacted Johnny`s brother. Being a family friend I feel they would like to know, I would ask first if it was me.
I understand about people abroad but there are security risks. I hope you will wait and see what his family think, if you visit the grave often there will be other chances once you know how they feel about it. Johnny and his father are very special to me and I feel it`s a personal duty to help safeguard their final resting place, hope you understand.
Johnny`s brother asked me to add response, I will place it in a seperate reply because it is imporatnt and I don`t want it lost with mine! please respect his family`s wishes. Thanks
I wrote to Johnny's father who has sadly now passed away as a similar thing happened in my family. I received a lovely mail back from his brother. Johnny was/is the embodiement of sport. He was uniquely talented and gave Lupe an extremley tough fight. Lupe Pintor himself was a marvellous fighter.
Lupe Pintor is my uncle/2 cusin. He's a great fighter n Owens was 2..Lupe Pintor is my dads cuzin my dad met him but my brothers n i havent met him.. i hope in da the future i'll c him... my oldest brother n i r goin 2 be tha next Pintors...u'll c in tha future ima be n tha ring any1 who reads this jus watch 5 6 7 years from now.
I thought this guy was a bum and that Pintor would destroy him easily in 3 or 4 rounds. But as the fight went on he gained my respect. Heart of a lion!!
I can hardly type, for my eyes are watery, I remember as a child seeing this fight in T.V. learning later of Owen's death, the sight of his body shocking from what now we know was brain haemorraghe never did leave me, later in life destiny brought me to north Wales from my natal Mexico, until today I learned he is Welsh, twice hurt by that, for Wales and the Welsh proved magnificent people, a sincere condolescence to his parents and relatives
joe calzaghe, should do some sort of a benefit fight for johnnys family, maybe to give them the a bit of the financial help and support that johnny himself was trying to do.
also we must praise and thank god for giving us this great and special guy. i remember the fight and i remember the hollow feeling johnnys passing left me with so how his family must have suffered.
Very sad to see the way he went down and eventually died.I still remember the news coverage of his death. The ban boxing brigade weren`t around then and there wasn`t all the calls to get boxing banned.
Thanks for posting this video. I remember Johnny's tragic fight w/Pintor. It was big news here in the Southland (LA/OC). I was a big Pintor fan. It was on Channel 2 (CBS) and I was amped to see Pintor in action again. It turned out to be a real war. I was amazed that Pintor was having such difficulty with Owen. But oh that was so tragic. It gave me goose bumps to see Johnny fall again...so distinct...really sad. Great tribute though. God rest his soul.
Hi Kolst, Publicly it was a big sports story in 1980, and the video was put together by the family and friends of Johnny, it is the only actual footage of the fight that exist in the public domain, as the BBC refused to show the fight at the time, hopefully one day the whole fight will come out of the archives, with the blessing of the Owen family of course.
Good job Scouse. It never left me , that illfated day in 1980, I read the papers daily praying Johnny Owen would make it through, i REMEMBER it like it was yesterday, it was so Sad. But may his great name LIVE on, cheers from Johnny Sawers, 1981 Houston Texas Amatuer Bantamweight Champ, Via Scotland .
Until today, I'd never heard of this boxing death. I wonder why it didn't get the publicity of Duk Koo Kim. Thanks for putting this up, but the music drowns out the commentary and instead of eliciting sympathy or grief it hammers the viewer over the head with it. It's over the top.
i come from liverpool i onliy herad of jonny yesterday when i was in merther tydfil visiting a friend. i saw his statue such a sad sad story jonny the mach stick man you will never walk alone friend RIP
I recognise this film from the Johnny Owen website that was set up by Johnny's family. He was a tremendously tenacious and gifted fighter who was the victim of one of the sport's most tragic events. I'd recommend Jeff Murphy's biography about him. One of the best biographys I've ever read on any subject.
He suffered a brain haemorrage following a 12th round knockout defeat challenging for the WBC Bantamweight title against Lupe Pintor in 1980. He never regained consciousness and died of pneumonia in an LA hospital 46 days later. The surgeon who operated on him discovered that Johnny had an abnormally thick jaw bone but wafer thin skull tissue. As a reaction to his passing the British Boxing Board of Control introduced compulsory skull x-rays and CT scans.
Everyone has limits and they should of stopped the fight

Just to think recently Junior Witter gave up after 8 Rounds to Devon Alexander because of a minor shoulder injury.
But Johnny battled Pinter to the bitter end.
A true warrior.
Stirring yet tragic stuff.
Whats the music in the backround BTW
This would be ideal for a feature film.
With all the proceeds going to charity/Johnny family.

Really touching :)

That's so great to hear your son is named after Johnny. I think Johhny would have been very proud. It is a pity that there are not more people in the world with as much courage, dedication and heart as Johnny Owen had. I am sure your son will grow up with the same great qualities as Johnny.

Hi again
more thoughts on your idea... it would be best to consult his family first out of respect, the grave after all is a sacred place for them to grieve both their loved ones, it`s not a publicity showpiece!
I have negative vibes about this and feel you should not do anything without first at least asking, I can contact his family and point them in the direction of this thread for you if neccessary!
Best wishes
Karen
SpectrumsRainbow 4 years ago
yes please , i have no way of contacting his family . it was just for like people abroad who are fans who will never have the chance to visit the grave . thanks again
ritchie93 4 years ago
Hi
I contacted Johnny`s brother. Being a family friend I feel they would like to know, I would ask first if it was me.
I understand about people abroad but there are security risks. I hope you will wait and see what his family think, if you visit the grave often there will be other chances once you know how they feel about it. Johnny and his father are very special to me and I feel it`s a personal duty to help safeguard their final resting place, hope you understand.

Gone but never forgotten.

HowardPorter 4 years ago
how did he die?
iiceman14 4 years ago
He suffered a brain haemorrage following a 12th round knockout defeat challenging for the WBC Bantamweight title against Lupe Pintor in 1980. He never regained consciousness and died of pneumonia in an LA hospital 46 days later. The surgeon who operated on him discovered that Johnny had an abnormally thick jaw bone but wafer thin skull tissue. As a reaction to his passing the British Boxing Board of Control introduced compulsory skull x-rays and CT scans.
