I played this - played it so much that a terrain feature was named after my character. Max I ever saw were 70 users at the same time - not bad. It was largely hack and slash, but with some good PvP fun with some well known evil players and some genuine politics. Completely playable at 300 baud, but you preferred 1200 when team battling a dragon or drake. Good nerdy fun.
its incredible how Cracked comments are full of respectable and/or funny gentlemen, but the Youtube comments about Cracked links are full of dumb "HERR DERR CRACKED LOL" stop being such attention whores, people
I played this game in the mid 80's and what you may not realize is that we were paying $6 an hour for the privilege. I had one monthly Compuserve bill of over $1000. Why did we do it? It was the only game mp game there was before Ultima Online
@Deeelon9 you dont get it this was made and realeased in like 1985.back then, well, lets just say, their IoK,is our 3D HD TV.yeah,it was pretty amazing back then.but of course NOW its going to be crud.as that is why it costed 12$ per hour to play.yes bandwith was expensive those days but it was probably worth it anyways.lol dont even know what bandwith is just got that from mmohut.
@FireWhisp My real love was MegaWars, but it changed when the pricing structure changed. When it was expensive, I had doctors, lawyers, businessmen, showbiz types... all powerful and driven. GREAT team!
@FireWhisp Actually, it did, indeed, allow "powergaming". I was a sysop in the GAMERS forum, and there was MUCH discussion of whether to take advantage of various bugs that allowed you to get a supercharacter quite easily. (I did have one such character... and in fact, I sold it to a fellow player for $35 real money!
A friend and I used to play this game regularly for about 5 years. It was a lot of fun if you had one of the player-supplied interfaces and could put up with the lag.
No, if you played at 300 baud it was'only' 6 dollars per hour. And the way compuserve was set up the time 300 baud was sufficient to play the game and still do well. It was a great game--I miss playing it sometimes.
@dodgydogman $12 was for faster games. I became Empress of the Galaxy around 1983, and spent over $5000 in one month (there were two of us, on two computers, two phone lines, playing just about round the clock.)
As you can see the guy playing it was a lot older because you could easily run up a multi thousand dollar bill in a month or two of getting your character up there. It used pretty much classic AD&D rules and had different quests and story lines and the community was great. This was back in the day og 'phreaking' and carding so we would hack accounts and play like hell and when we were discovered we would 'destroy the town'. All wow is is a big pretty graphic interface, but its quests suck.
This was really the fist mmorpg and it was on CompuServe. I was 15 or so when I discovered it but couldn't really play because check this out - it was $6 an hour at 300 baud and $12 an hour at 1200 baud!
They stole this from WoW.

@patrick7900 You will have to put the video settings all the way down but even if you do that you will still get plenty lag. :(
