I love this song. Karen Gordon of Garden City Jazz sung this at my dad's, Tommie W. Gulley, Jr., funeral in Augusta, GA and it was so beautiful. I have loved this song and the meaning to those who love The Lord since hearing it for the first time during our dad home going service. Thanks again Karen.
This Song is much deeper than it appears on the surface. It is a true negro spiritual...when out of desperation and longing the negro just wanted to peace and solace...really has nothing to do with religion per se, more spiritual...HISTORY is where it's at! Get into it...

I told Jesus it would be alright if he changed my name. If my father turns me away now, if my mother turns me away, if my brother or my little sister, if they all turn me away, Lord, I told Jesus if would be alright if he changed my name.
can someone please tell me what this song means! i also know it by roberta flack as 'i told jesus' from her first album, and it doesn't make sense to me either. what???!!!!
....the song is a negro spiritual and it simply means that If you let jesus change your name- naming you a believer in his...the the world would be against you...and she is proclaiming it doesn't matter lord I am yours and Im not worried about what others think...pretty much im sure your found out by now sorry its so late
don't forget these songs were also code songs for slave communication to distract the slave/field master. dual meanings sometimes three and four different meanings too bad we don't have the total written 1st voice historical account for this genre of songs
@loaactnow in my opinion, the idea that all spirituals were used as code is wrong. And some songs like Steal Away that did include coded words/phrases were sometimes sung without those coded meanings. I agree with swest726's explanation about this song. Also, for the record, since someone asked this on a forum I visit, there's no Black Christian tradition of changing names like there is among some Black people who are Muslims & some afrocentric Black people.
Jesus told me that the world would be against me if he changed my name.
