I'm reading the book for the second time, and to be honest, this is not like I supposed the scene is like. I can see why Irwin was not so happy bout it.

In the book, he is horny as hell, turned on immediately by her, and she is a drug addict, has a dozen of lovers, I did not imagine her as a quiet person, she is a heavy drinker as him and their lifes are fast. The scene that would fit to modern life, not as this, dry quiet ambient.

Still, glad that there is a movie out there.

@pjubagoni You have to remember the era. Hollywood films were very restricted in what they were allowed to show, they even had guidelines for stage kisses. The indiscretions are portrayed symbolically, in the low cut black dress, the cabinet of liquor, the black lace. I think drug addiction might have been a little heavy for Hollywood in the 50's.

A re-make would probably follow the book far closer, but I can't imagine this film, or this scene, without Brando. <3

You have to read the original novel by Irwin Shaw. The character is an insane sex fiend and whore.

The scenes with Maximillian Schell's Killer Kaptain Hartenburg should be taught at West Point. Christian spends the whole of the story trying to live up to his example. Even as he's going bat-shit crazy.

Stephan Kanfer believes he was always trying to give an impressionistic version of an accent. I suppose what that really means is how Marlon thought the accent sounded to him and by implication, most Americans.
