  • Cactus just smoked on Friday night at the Magic Bag! McCarty's tone out of that Les Paul was searing. Where as Danny's tone from his Les Paul was just muddy sludge. How can your tone sound so lousy when you play a Les Paul through a Twin Reverb? Tells me he doesn't know much about his gear besides being a real average player. Bobby East was playing better licks on that acoustic.

  • By the way, the new Cactus album smokes. If you liked the old stuff, you're gonna love this album. Jim McCarty's guitar work on this album just blazes. Ya. I'll be there this Friday.

  • The Trash Brats were great! Ricky is a super nice guy. And how is Bootsy doing these days? As far as Alucard, you may not like the songs (I do. I always liked a lot of metal AND punk), but you have to admit that the kid can rip on the guitar. Those videos don't even do him real justice. Thinking of going to the Cactus show. Jim McCarty is another great guitar player.

  • Sonic's Rendezvous band was a great example of simple high energy original rock with GREAT guitar playing from Fred Smith. None of these local garage bands have a guitar player even close to being in that league. You want to see a current local band with excellent hard rock songs and a true guitar hero who plays his ass off, check out a band called Alucard. Type in Alucard shredcore here on youtube or check their myspace (Alucardrock). I have become a big fan after catching them locally.

  • I'll give you a little background here. Besides playing in two of the bands featured in this lameass and ten years too late movie, I've also played in recent bands with members of Coldcock, the Lovemasters and Trash Brats.

  • No Internet research here, just a real love for real rock and roll. I love Sonic's Rendevous, but I'm not going to dis them because they're not part of "my generation". I guess that's my only beef with your perspective is that any recent Detroit band is automatically shit because they got some undeserved press.

  • Wow! I just checked out Alucard, and that was some of the most godawful newrock/emo/sloppy metal, I've ever heard. I guess we must just have dissimilar tastes. I'm just into rock and roll, man. Not Hardcore meets post grunge new metal slop freakouts. I agree with you on the Romantics new stuff though.

  • Oh, and I also agree with you that Bobby East is fucking awesome.

  • Maybe we could argue/agree at the Cactus reunion. You goin'?

  • The thing is these bands like the Muggs and Hard Lessons lack any originality with their three chord garage sound. Simplicity can be great AND original if you have talent. Elvis Hitler is a perfect example. An older band like The Reruns is another example of simple songs with great hooks and melodies, where as a band like the Muggs flat out rip off exact riffs from bands like Led Zep. And, the Hentchmen probably could learn a few things from Ron Ashton.

  • I am guessing that you did a little internet research and actually haven't seen some of the older bands that you mention. If you had seen a band like the Reputations, you would know that Robert Gillespie could play circles around Danny Methric any day of the week. So could bobby East and Tom Morwatts. I agree about the Romantics. 61/49 is the best album they have ever done.

  • It's not a matter of jealousy. It's a fact. I have been around the Detroit music scene for decades. These bands suck. It was done better in the late 70s and early 80s. These bands are as unoriginal as it gets, and half of them can hardly play. Baron, you obviously don't know shit about past music scenes or the good bands that are around now.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot, the Ramrods played their instruments soooo much better than the Sights. Excuuuse me! Maybe the Hentchmen should take music lessons from Destroy All Monsters. If Danny Methric and Robert Gillespie had a guitar wank contest guess who I'd put my money on?

Nothing lasts forever, in twenty years about as many people will remember any of these bands as there are people who remember Coldcock now.

  • As far as "Originality", it's just rock and roll. I'm more than happy to see some guys bang out a I-IV-V with enthusiasm and everyone having a good time. Are the Romantics especially original? Not really, but they're fun.

I'm all for hearing about what bands you think are great around town right now, because I'm bored as fuck with everything I'm seeing.

  • A lot of people decide what kind of music they like in high school through their mid-twenties, and decide that everything that comes after is crap. That's a bad place to be. Don't let nostalgia keep you from enjoying rock and roll.

  • Don't worry, you're not missing anything. It's about this little click of the same shitty bands who tell each other how great they are but can't play for shit or come up with something original to save their lives. There's a whole different scene with a different bunch of venues that some really TALENTED bands play that never gets any press.

  • Waaaaah, Boo Hoo, cry me a fucking river. I'm soooo sorry your crappy metal band isn't getting enough press from playing at the I-Rock, or whatever the hell you're talking about.

  • It's also pretty silly to get jealous over something that was pretty much done and over with five years ago.

  • I want to see this movie so bad but I am stuck here in Rhode Island.

  • The Dirtbombs. GOD, so sexy.
