This is why I look forward to memorial day weekend. Monaco, Indy and Coke 600 in Nascar. Same thing happened later that day with Dale Jr, he was supposed to win, except he ran out of fuel 500 feet short of the finish line. Best racing weekend I've seen.
@hamlinfanVA And both cars were sponsored by National Guard.. Kinda strange. Annnnnd both of their names have JR in it. J.R. Hildebrand & Dale JR. Weird.
Dan Wheldon didn't really die. God just wanted Speedway racing lessons.
unfortunately, that means that one of the best drivers in open-wheel motor racing has left this world, and has gone up to race with other former greats. Ayrton Senna, Jim Clark, Ronnie Peterson, Alberto Ascari, Jochen Rindt, and other great drivers who lost their lives doing what their hearts told them to do: race, and race to win.
I have a feeling JR will have a great future in the sport and win multiple races. He's young, hungry, and has a good team behind him. Who knows? Maybe JR can become the face of the series the way everyone hoped Dan would be. Rest in peace Dan. We miss you!
credit to Dan that was a stroke of luck winning at the Brickyard, but it doesnt matter how they come a win will always be a win! I remember watching the race live, and then the race at vegas, seems like there was no time inbetween! Dan was an inspiration and the reason I took my racing further, Gone forever but never forgotten!
I think that now Hildebrand, after the last race, meets a sense of his crash and giving the win to Dan with honey and hugs: It would be the last happiness in Dan´s life. RIP Dan Wheldon
It appears Speedway officials waited until Wheldon passed Hildebrand before turning on the yellow light. That gave the win to Wheldon, but the Yellow should have came on the instant Hildeband hit the wall, giving Hildebrand the victory.
Seems we had an issue with this yellow light thing a few years ago with Tracy.
@theslimkay he deserves it more then hildebrand, if u cant finish you dont deserve to win wheldon could have just set back and said oh well second place again in the last few laps, but kept trying and got close enoguh for hildebrand to make a mistake and he did and took the win
@xJoeRockBoyx I believe it was fate that set him up for what happened. Maybe if he hadn't won he wouldn't have been considered for the challenge at Vegas. It's really sad, he was a real inspiration. Maybe in his honor the other drivers will follow his lead and become the gentlemen that he was. He will be greatly missed.
When I have something really IMPORTANT to SAY, I will put ALL the important WORDS in capital letters SO that people understand WHAT I mean because they are too STUPID to realise otherwise
LOL, saddly it's true ... Point being, Indycar waved the flag late. this new 'Indycar' is all about selling itself. When it comes down to it, the rulebook and safety book get thrown out the window in order to create some kind of spectacle. Off the top of my head, Indy, Toronto, New Hampshire, The Texas Lottery, and most saddly the tragedy at Vegas were all results of that ideology from the braintrust at Indycar. The series is just plain poorly run and Barnhart should go to jail.
@AtomicMutant ...so what would have happened if the crashed car didnt make it to the finish line, would the cars still be sitting in single file behind it to this day?? ridiculous comment
You are COMPLETELY missing the point. The yellow SHOULD have come out and the race SHOULD have ended under yellow. Positions would have frozen and JR would have rolled across as winner. IF his car was to crippled to win, drivers WOULD have known to pass him. POINT BEING, they should have thrown the flag when wreck happened and figured it out afterwards. If JR hit the wall 100 feet from the finish line or 1000 feet from the finish line They STILL should have thrown the yellow, PERIOD
Let's say they DID throw yellow within a second of JRs crash. He'd have slowed substantially and Dan would have passed him anyway, with the arguement JR's car wasn't able to continue. He still may have won the race. They may have had to figure it out after the fact, but the race would have ended according to rules. On ovals for safety YOU THROW YELLOW ON A WRECK IMMEDIATELY. no second guessing, no waiting, positions freeze. end of story. Indycar WAITED to throw yellow, case closed
Ultimately, Indycar SHOULD have thrown yellow as soon as JR hit the wall. But Indycar CHOSE to hold it for about 9 seconds, until AFTER Wheldon passed. IF they followed their own rules, JR should have rolled over the finish first, as positions freeze on a yellow. But Indycar decided to manage this race, and "create" an exciting finish by letting Wheldon pass under yellow ... It's awful that the same series that 'managed' this 500 win, also created the conditions of his death with pack racing.
@AtomicMutant Yes because it would'be been so much better in IndyCar's view for a British driver to win the race rather than an American hero sponsored by the National Guard which is the very thing that this series needs in order to boost up its audience; for sure IndyCar has the worst management ever. The person in charge of the button is not on race control but rather in the flag stand, and you could see in the video he was scrambling. By the time he pushed the button Wheldon was past by 2 sec
Wheldon was WAY behind JR when he hit. JR hit the wall, and Dan passed him under green, yes ... POINT BEING the yellow SHOULD have been thrown within a second or so of JR's wreck (it's not like Indycar could miss that wreck) but Indycar WAITED until AFTER Dan passed. JR hits the wall @37 secs, Yellow comes out at 45 secs (you see it) Wheldon was BEHIND when JR hit the wall, and it took almost 9 secs for Yellow. It has nothing to do with WHO won the race, it's HOW the race was won.
NO, the INSTANT yellow comes out positions freeze. Unlike NASCAR there is no racing to the finish line under yellow. THAT'S the crux of the issue, Indycar once again didn't adhere to it's own rules (but what else is new.) "Amazing Race" they proclaimed, when it fact it was a managed finish. Made for good press, but analyze it objectively and it was a ruined race. I think Indycar just didn't want to have to deal with not having a clean and didn't want to finish under yellow.
With all respect to Dan, (RIP, you were one of the nicest guys in the series) this 500 was another fine example of a race 'managed' by Indycar ... it took 9 SECONDS for Indycar to throw the yellow, and IndyCar WAITED until AFTER Wheldon passed JR to throw the flag. SHOULD have thrown it the instant he hit and figured it out after. Completely managed event ... Ruined the race ... Indycar is it's own worst enemy, and it's horrible 'oval pack racing' philosophy killed Wheldon ... Shame on Indycar
@AtomicMutant Wheldon chose to get in the car and drive knowing the risks. IndyCar is a great sport and league. You could die at any race if the car wrecks the right way! Mike Conway the year before this could have died on the final lap at Indy if his car hit the catch fence the wrong way.
Oh sure, I understand the dangers, I've been watching Indycar (in all of it's various forms) for more than 25 years, so I am well aware of the dangers of the sport. My point was not that Wheldon was a poor driver, but that this win was a result of a managed race, and (god rest his soul) Wheldon's win is tainted by how Indycar manages the series ... Indycar USED to be a great sport, but now it's little more than an exhibition, and nowadays it's little more than a managed lottery.
I've been watching Indycar for over 25 years, stopped watching NASCAR about 10 years ago. Never used to watch F1 much (Indycar was my series for a very long time) but this year is the first time in my life that I would consider myself an F1 fan first, and an Indycar fan a distant second, Indycar has drastically slipped in my books. It's a shadow of the great series it used to be ... People just don't understand how GREAT Indycar USED to be. Now it's just junk.
@AtomicMutant No hard feelings. I understand it's different. I do miss the late 80's and early 90's of Indy Car. Just never give up on it. It has the chance of coming back and being strong again. It's nice to see Chevy and Lotus. We need Ford to get involved and other world class engines Ferrari would be amazing someday. It will be nice to have the Detroit Grand Prix back.
It's cool :) got that from your post ... Yer right, would be nice to see Indycar get back to where it should be, but it's a tough sled. They biggest problem with Indycar is, well, Indycar. If you watched it in the 80's and 90's you know how much different and how much more professional it was back then, no need to explain to you ... Hopefully the motors will help (thats the best news) We'll see. patiently waiting for 2012 ... 2011 can go back to the hell from where it came.
He will always be remembered as a great Champions for videos like this. Hildebran crashes and Wheldon sneaks in for the win - great driving!! Shame there was a much worse crash 4-5 months later...
This is the way we'll remember you champion...the drivers are modern time knights....Just want to say a thing, Indycar organization should think about the fact of rebuilding some oval track with the fan tribunes in the inside of it, in order to give getaways to the drivers. It would be expensive, but there is no amount of money more important than the life of the people...
I am sorry for Dan but the fault comes from safety rules, disability of engineers and organisers to prevent such things to happen. A F1 car driving double speed of Dan's car would incure nothing, to pilot's cabin. You are so far from F1. The safety there seems like racing with kit cars at 200km/h
Nearly 17 n half years ago, I sat and watched as Aryton Senna, crashed and suffered his life ending injuries. Today, I think I have seen my last ever motor racing (of any sort) death. This has been one death now to many. I have lost count over the last 17 n half years how many motor sports death's I have seen live or heard about later. But now, enough is enough. I am going to stop watching them all from now on!
R.I.P. Dan Wheldon! You will be more than sorely missed by everyone around the world
@ChrisMDSmith79 All of us who love this sport have said that at least once if not more times. I am older, and times like this brings back our darker memories of the sport we love. The first one I recall as a fan was Ronnie Peterson in F1. I was shaken by it badly. My father was a fan of Dale Earnhart, and felt the same when he left us. The loss of the likable kid in the glasses Greg Moore, and of course the great one Senna. The fans know the risks, but we love the sport, as do the drivers
The 2012 Indy 500 will have a difficult moment for me, because I know that at some point I'll irrationally expect the previous year's champion to come on to the grid and defend his crown. Just as difficult as 1996 was, when I expected Scott Brayton to take up his hard-won pole position... :-(
i watch all forms of motorsports and i hate it when people start bashing other forms of racing. Thats just shows ignorance. Its like the same thing as racism. I love watching F1, WRC, IRL, NASCAR and enjoy them all equally and respect the fact that it takes lots of skill and commitment to drive at any of these levels. They all are different disciplines of racing and comparing them is unfair.
@aaronkimi86 Don't worry about it. Clearly just a bunch of ignorant idiots, just like your average racist indeed. Plenty of motorsports fans out there that just get on with enjoying the show of driver, engine, wheels & fuel, regardless :)
Such a heart breaker for J.R. Hildebrand....then that same night Dale Jr. would lose the lead off the final corner on the final lap after running out of fuel...ohh the similarites of both inccidents to...both drivers have "JR" in their name, both were sponsored by National Guard & both lost the lead coming to take the checkards out of the final turn...wierd
i was at that race sitting in the middle close to the beginning of pit road. that was extremely exciting those last few laps, especially with that wreck.
An indycar is like an F1 car from the the mid 1990. It´s not hard to make a racecar just go fast in a strahigt line. A good racecar can run fast through corners aswell. For that you need effective aerodynamics which a modern F1 have. On a real racetrack an indycar is as fast as a gp2 car (both made by Dallara I think).
arguing about this is pointless, boys. F1 and indy are 2 different things, and not only for the nature of the tracks.. an F1 car is a completely different thing from an indycar. stop talking about this shit and comment about this poor guy xD
You know little about engines. Half of the RPM's of a F1 car doesnt mean the potential for more speed. It only means slow acceleration. Canada allows head to head comparison between F1 and Indy, because both series drive there on the same track. Sebastien Bourdais won pole position for the Indy event held there in 2009 with a time of 1:20.396, Jenson Button who won the pole for the F1 event held earlier in the year, set a time of 1:15.217. In a simulated 70-lap race, F1 wins by over 6 minutes.
@gahloot Let me get this right. Are you implying that Indycar engines are more sophisticated/more modern than F1 engines?! Indycars are OBSOLETE man. 880HP and 1350lbs driven by super alien hi-tech vs an ancient 650 HP and 1650lbs. 500 million dolar vs 20 milion dolar budget teams?! Indy is a piss weak series compared to F1. That's a fact. Now, you may continue living in your dream land, you may wake up. It's up to you.
@TBKJi1 The Indy cars are around 650 HP and 1650 lbs now, compared to
800+80=880 HP amd 1350 lbs for the F1s, which have vastly superior brakes and handling and higher revs. Indy cars don't have anywhere near the kind of lap time potential as an F1 car. As the cars are setup now, the Indy doesn't even have an oval advantage any more. The current F1s could easily adapt to big ovals, although back when the Indy cars were turbo V-8s with up to 1100 HP, THEY devoured ovals!
Copy/paste and search "F1 2010 Monaco Mark Webber Pole Lap' and then do your homework. Watch other videos, use Wiki, Hear the sound, feel the strain and skill required, educate, educate :) OMG, you Americans are indeed so narrow minded. Comparing your ancient indy cars and nascars to F1 is soooo stupid and uneducated!!!!! Watch the vid "Jeff Gordon drives F1 Car - Montoya drives 24" Jeff himself said it was the drive of a lifetime.
@jamatune22 Oh, You probably havent heard of William Shakespeare or Mike Jagger either. How come?! I leave that to you to figure out. Now, copy this:
"Jeff Gordon drives F1 Car - Montoya drives 24" and hit search (without exclamation marks, if you know what they are) LOL m8!
@gahloot Lift all the downforce of F1 car and it obliterates indycar. F1 car is super new tech ppl, indycars are ancient. Is it so difficult to accept?!!
It is also stupid to compare top speeds of F1 and Indy. F1 has similar top speed to indycar, a bit faster, BUT, bear in mind the top speed is measured with the car set up for road course. Imagine what the difference would be if the mechanics just tweaked the car for an oval by lifting all the downforce required for a street course?! Then imagine if they were given 1 day to tweak the engine.... :)
Indy is not serious. Letting Milka Dunno and alike drive?!!!! And this newly introduced system of lottery at the last race. It's CIRCUS! Comparing Indy to F1 is not even funny guys. I mean, i watch it for fun, since i am not interested in any other sport apart from onroad open-wheel moto sport, therefore not much to choose from :) I would realy realy love to see Will Power in F1. That man has talent. :)
Rest in peace Dan. A true British motorsport great. Here's to more Brits following in your hallowed slipstream and winning this magnificent race!

You will be more than sorely missed by everyone around the world
ChrisMDSmith79 4 months ago
@ChrisMDSmith79 All of us who love this sport have said that at least once if not more times. I am older, and times like this brings back our darker memories of the sport we love. The first one I recall as a fan was Ronnie Peterson in F1. I was shaken by it badly. My father was a fan of Dale Earnhart, and felt the same when he left us. The loss of the likable kid in the glasses Greg Moore, and of course the great one Senna. The fans know the risks, but we love the sport, as do the drivers
gurlsingerfan 4 months ago
@gurlsingerfan The first one I remember was Gilles Villeneuve. The first Champ Car death was Jeff Krosnoff (first year Champ Car was shown in the UK).
At the same time as Senna, you also lost the young young talented driver of Roland Ratzenberger.

@aaronkimi86 Ha! motorracism..
adamkent8 5 months ago

KrazyKcRacing31 7 months ago
i was at that race sitting in the middle close to the beginning of pit road. that was extremely exciting those last few laps, especially with that wreck.

An indycar is like an F1 car from the the mid 1990. It´s not hard to make a racecar just go fast in a strahigt line. A good racecar can run fast through corners aswell. For that you need effective aerodynamics which a modern F1 have. On a real racetrack an indycar is as fast as a gp2 car (both made by Dallara I think).
aMUSEing90 7 months ago
what a dumbass! did he just go into the corner too hot?

wow!!! What an interesting day in all of the races.

Half a percent watch F1 here and its on speed channel which no one gets and it plays at 4am!
gahloot 7 months ago
Indy cars still looks so basic, as the f1's o mid 90's, still fun to watch no doubt about it.
Joescuderia 7 months ago
arguing about this is pointless, boys. F1 and indy are 2 different things, and not only for the nature of the tracks.. an F1 car is a completely different thing from an indycar. stop talking about this shit and comment about this poor guy xD
darkspugna92 7 months ago
Its funny how people are arguing about Indy Cars and F1, not even related to the video. LOL!

In a simulated 70-lap race, F1 wins by over 6 minutes.
iwcham1979 8 months ago
@gahloot Let me get this right. Are you implying that Indycar engines are more sophisticated/more modern than F1 engines?! Indycars are OBSOLETE man. 880HP and 1350lbs driven by super alien hi-tech vs an ancient 650 HP and 1650lbs. 500 million dolar vs 20 milion dolar budget teams?! Indy is a piss weak series compared to F1. That's a fact. Now, you may continue living in your dream land, you may wake up. It's up to you.
iwcham1979 8 months ago

@TBKJi1 Te m8. At Boneville it hit 413km/h :)
iwcham1979 8 months ago
It is also stupid to compare top speeds of F1 and Indy. F1 has similar top speed to indycar, a bit faster, BUT, bear in mind the top speed is measured with the car set up for road course. Imagine what the difference would be if the mechanics just tweaked the car for an oval by lifting all the downforce required for a street course?! Then imagine if they were given 1 day to tweak the engine.... :)
iwcham1979 8 months ago
Indy is not serious. Letting Milka Dunno and alike drive?!!!! And this newly introduced system of lottery at the last race. It's CIRCUS! Comparing Indy to F1 is not even funny guys. I mean, i watch it for fun, since i am not interested in any other sport apart from onroad open-wheel moto sport, therefore not much to choose from :) I would realy realy love to see Will Power in F1. That man has talent. :)
