If you want a real grip strength buy Captain of Crush Trainer and #-1 for beginners.I use them coz i have a jellyfish handsake and loose the bar when i deadlift :)

It's usually just a bit of a time saver - simply adding a few plates vs. taking a few off and then adding another big one. I usually change it out though because when you have the 45's on there you look like you're doing some serious work.
