@HeroOfTime121 Isn't it easier to simply buy a bobbed hammer and replace it? They can't be that expensive and you wouldn't have to damage the existing hammer to do it.
@jpcs302 I realize Mr. Potterfield has all the money and gun parts any of us kids could want. Why cut it off when you can buy one already done and not ruin the value of the model on hand
@jpcs302 Yep that's a better solution. I have the utmost respect for the Larry Potterfield and his family for their work in the industry with the NRA. He is well knowledged in weapons. The tips he demo's are accurate and simple to follow. and very helpful to most of us that come to these videos. Personally I finding bobbing the hammer wrong when it gives me the excuse to buy a hammerless model.
I recently bobbed a hammer using this video. Since I had the tools to do it, I polished the surface to a mirror like finish before applying the cold blue. It came out GREAT. Never again will my hammer snag on winter clothing :)
To make it DAO. There are lawyers that jump all over people who defend themselves with a revolver that has a hammer. The lawyers say the defender used it in single action mode and so meant to kill. Supposedly the defender had time to cock and aim the pistol, hence he's a killer!!!
@baconator490 isn't the trigger pull shorter and lighter after you kill cock the hammer before firing, improving acuracy? plus if you're aiming at someone to get him to do something , cocking it reminds the client once again that you mean business...
@yesrdevries its a little bit lighter of a pull but not longer and accuracy isnt that great with handguns anyways. And i doubt cocking it in front of him would really get the person more motivated that happens in movies.
@yesrdevries Although you are somewhat correct on cocking the gun to show you mean business, in the eyes of the law and anti-gun lawyers it also shows you had way more time on your hands to escape or try to take another plan of action. Also if you do cock the gun it makes the trigger pull very light and more prone to accidental discharges. I don't want to fight about this matter, but if you do, just read some columns from Massad Ayoob before contacting me.
Larry, you forgot to stone the single action notch on the hammer. Once you bob a hammer you lose the ability to lower the hammer safely back. That's why if you bob the hammer you should render it DAO.
Now the pretty revolver looks castrated...

@thedarkinhell Less chance to snag on clothing. Not really a big disadvantage either because in self defense you wouldn't shoot it in single action.

@LRooster4Prez Yep thats kinda what I thought, BUT whatever floats your boat...
But personally it may be for concealed carry purposes so the hammer doesnt snag on your clothes...

What the hell?? Why would anyone do that?
Shinerbop 2 years ago
The one thing I don't understand is why would someone do that?
Sneak174 2 years ago
To prevent the spur from snagging when you carry the revolver.
flxsptzr 2 years ago
@flxsptzr Ok; think you.
Sneak174 2 years ago
lol just make sure you have a double action revolver before doing this
baconator490 2 years ago 24
Hahahaha! That would be pretty hilarioius if someone did that to a single action.
Shinerbop 2 years ago 27
@baconator490
S&W doesn't make a single action revolver.

It's because hammer-spurs snag like none other in the case of concealed-carry...
Then again, who conceal-carries a 4 inch revolver...

why would someone even trying to kill cock the hammer before firing? pulling the trigger is faster and easier

Cool, but what is the point?
Phantomrig 3 years ago
@Phantomrig so the hammer doesnt get caught up on something and gives the gun a smaller profile
