The song is powerful even though it could be about a personal relationship, it could also be a way to describe how they felt to say: "It's only goodbye" to the type of music they would prefer performing.
Nice song, well done. Even GG has acknowledged they were attempting to be commercial and losing their way musically. I saw and met them in the 70's when they were touring in or near NY at the height of their own style and creativity.
@RandomChance7 The later stuff didn't play bridges and interludes so that other members could scurry to transition over to using other instruments. And to switch from one beat to the other is so interesting to a live audience. If this band didn't market itself by just playing on the street as a quintet, it would have still stood out because of their interesting off beat arrangements, their fascinating interludes, and their masterful musicianship as multi-instrumentalists.
Not 100% atrocious taken on its own, but compare this to, say... "Think of Me With Kindness." There just isn't any comparison if we're looking for sincerity.
i agree with wolfeline to the point of them trying to be commertial it was a poor atempt with civilian gfad is ok but lets not start comparing it to in a glass house or free hand
This song is too a kind of Gentle Giant "goodbye". It has a wonderfull tune and a fine and fine, simple lyrics. Sooon would come the next and last album "Civilian" and the end of this band. They were already "decaying" and finnally ended. They, whom left us some of the best works on "pop music".
I don't believe GG ever "decayed". They merely tried to adapt in a rapidly changing music scene and suffered for it. I firmly believe that if the release of Civilian would have happened just two years later, after the advent of MTV, they could have had an influx of fortune and money which would have allowed them to continue in any way they desired as a band. Even being their weakest album, GFaD is still excellent from start to finish.

I really agree with you. They always made something different, at that peolple are interested in "normal" things.

Gentle Giant - It's Only Goodbye
1.
Strange though we made it, in those days that were bare
What pulled us through them, something was there
I can remember, drifting apart,
Thoughtless ways much stronger,
As the time grew longer

2.
One for one not always,
Then you said to me...
It's only goodbye, a smile and a cry, and suddenly over, when
I think of you know, in kindness allow. My memory lingers, then
It's only goodbye, my strength telling lies,
Just facing what had to be

3.
Mixed my reflections, did we think it was real
Was it forever, fear not, just feel
You had your troubles, yes I had mine
Weren't we both for sharing, No not really caring,
I would realize that, when you said to me...
