I am so glad i kept my godzilla movies in vhs. whoever says vhs sucks must regret it. I agree with most people here, Biollante scared me as a kid for the how the monster looked disturbing rather then megalon. I think godzilla was closer to being defeated in this movie then the others ive seen so far.
I don't think this trailer advertises the film very well, I'm not surprised the movie flopped in Japan. It just doesn't capture the film's 'spirit' well, often good movies flop because of bad ad campaigns. Sometimes the studios seem to do this on purpose either because they don't understand what they're selling or as self sabotage or revenge because they fear originality.
For those who don't know, Osamu Tezuka (the godfather of manga) was on the board of judges for the script writing contest that approved this particular story to be used in this film. Thus, GODZILLA vs. BIOLLANTE is the only Godzilla film (that I'm aware of) based on a script approved by the Godfather of Manga himself.
I wasn't terribly surprised...the imaginative and emotional nature of the story (especially Shiragami's plight) would have probably been appealing to Tezuka. Biollante is a very unique, creative and poetic monster with a solid tragic background.
The best Heisei Godzilla film, in my opinion. Dark, gritty and with actual character development. Even though some people might cite Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah as the best, the campiness in that one (and those released thereafter) doesn't sit well with me. I dont know... I guess I like my Godzilla films to be serious. Anyone agree with me?
@kaiserscott No. You're right. This is one of the best Godzilla films in the entire series. Well developed characters over mindless action and ridiculous storylines. I found sympathy with everyone - even over the monster battles, I wanted to know what became of these characters. Very well written, and it saddens me that they degenerated back into the childish Showa-esque storylines with GvKG, even though I did enjoy the Heisei Godzilla vs. Mothra.
Commercial entertainment is what sells. Biollante didn't do too well at the box office so they had to make the series sillier and more formulaic to bring back in some of their old audience.
I have always envisioned that a true sequel to BIOLLANTE would continue right where this film left off with the same human characters present and Koichi Sugiyama composing the music again. The plot would concern Godzilla hibernating in the Bering Sea sick from the ANEB infection and Kuroki and his team would have to formulate and execute a final plan to destroy him once and for all. It would make an epic trilogy out of the first three Heisei films.
I was kind of hoping it would be somewhat close to what Kazuki Omori (the director and writer) might have envisioned had BIOLLANTE not been such a box office disappointment for Toho. Instead of continuing in the gritty nature of this film, they had to bring King Ghidora back for the 5th time and use a confusing time travel plot which harked back to some of the wackiness of the 60's films. That sold well...and the rest is history.
I was lucky enough to catch it on HBO as a child, Biolante scared the hell out of me when it became is second form, the rose part was pretty cool looking, but the crocodile head with giant tusk and fangs with a acidic pollen stream was just terrifying for an 8 year old. Plus the secret agent subplot was pretty cool. I'm lucky to have have a recording from its HBO premier(English dub), an official VHS copy(Japanese language) and a bootleg DVD, with both since there are no official release in USA
I feel you. Biollante actually traumatized me as a child. Both forms I found grotesque and utterly disturbing. The idea that it was three creatures at once competing with each other for control made it seem pitiful and revolting because it was so unnatural. It also just looked nasty with all those fangs and that belly full of acid. That wailing noise it made evoked images of a poor creature crying for help--desperate to be released from the misery of its existence.
@aznricekracker I found Biollante pretty freaky as a kid too. I was afraid to see the movie for a while from the (really quite impressive) poster/cover art. It's a great update of the Godzilla series for the 80s-90s and one of my favorite entries, it brings a nice edginess to the series I think.
I do. Too bad the elite Godzilla fan community has such contempt for these films. I don't know what their problem is. They are so hostile and overly critical towards the Heisei films, but applaud films like SON OF GODZILLA and SEA MONSTER for the virtue of being "good entertainment". Unfortunately these are the guys writing the books and all we hear is their opinion. But I think their snobby Showa-phile elitism is not helping the character's reputation in the West.
Hopefully, the creators of the 2012 film will see it fit to use films like THIS and the original movie as inspiration instead of getting hung up on the films like KING GHIDORA, MONSTER ZERO, SEA MONSTER and (God forbid) MEGALON. That's what the new BATMAN films are doing right...having only SOME fantasy elements, but not so much that the story loses its grounding or credibility in a somewhat realistic setting.
@aznricekracker Honestly, I don't have high hopes for the 2012 film. It would be wonderful if it turned out to be a great film, and used the darker Godzilla entries as its foundations. However, American films, as you might already know, have a tendency to be dumbed-down and CGI-laden messes. The '98 'Godzilla' film exemplifies this. And even if it sticks closely to its roots (despite the lack of suitamation), there's still the chance it'll aim for the campiness of the aforementioned films.
Actually you may be right. It would probably be too naive to assume anything else. Thanks in part to bad marketing and hardened Showa-phile elitism in the fan community, Godzilla's reputation in the West is practically cemented in the silly films of the 60's and 70's. Filmmakers, scholars, producers, etc. have a nostalgic fixation with the 60's and 70's which will be very difficult to get them to look around. For them, the silliness is one of the main draw of the series.
13 years ago, Emmerich and Devlin boasted that THEIR version would do the original 1954 film justice! Devlin claimed that their Godzilla film was (metaphorically) the "Tim Burton" BATMAN to the Adam West series.
THAT'S how loose Godzilla's reputation is in the West. For the filmmakers of this generation, the films like RETURNofG, BIOLLANTE, DESTROYER, and GMK don't even exist! Instead they fondly remember ASTRO MONSTER, SON OF, GHIDORA and MEGALON.
I on the other hand have ''high hopes'' for the American Reboot of Godzilla. Completely different studio to people who are fans of the franchise, an Gareth Edwards is a solid choice of director. He isn't a Micheal Bay, or Emmerich that require huge budgets an lack human characterization in there films.
So far there working hard on the script, which shows determination, an Thomas Tull CEO of Legendary is working close with Toho to make sure this is the Godzilla we all know an love
@kaiserscott Yes. I, too, like the darker Godzilla films: "Gojira," "Gojira" (1984-Japanese version)., "Godzilla vs. Biollante" (one of the best in the series, IMO), "Godzilla 2000 Millennium" (again, the Japanese version) and "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah:Giant Monsters All-Out Attack." My favorite sequels from the Showa G films are "Mothra vs. Godzilla" and "Godzilla Raids Again."
@kaiserscott Oh, come on. The originals? Of course they are in Japanese. They are the BEST!! They're the ORIGINALS!!!
The Japanese invented monster movies. The unstoppable monster that comes out of the sea and destroys everything in sight? Now, who does THAT sound like?
@Alzilla09 Unfortunately, different studios own the rights to the various G-films. Unless Toho itself releases a deluxe BluRay set (which is region free), it won't happen sadly.
@theoneJustinB as much as i agree, everytime they announce dvd releases they never get all of them because of the rights; King Kong vs. Godzilla I know is one of them
we need this movie on dvd, same with godzilla 1985 and rebirth fo mothra trilogy. there is no reason why we still dont have a dvd release of these rare films. no excuse to not release them for so very long. lets hope that someday an arrangement can be reach between companies. for all godzilla and kaiju fans out there , keep our fingers crossed and keep on praying until it may happen someday. man was the heisei series fun to watch. my favorite era of the godzilla films. ^-^
That was possibly my favorite "godzilla vs. " but you cant find it anywhere. Biolante was the scariest thing Godzilla ever fought, besides Destroyah and that was only bc Des. was twice his size
i am so mad right now every time i want to watch godzilla vs biollante a wesite that shows the movie and lets me watch it makes me have to create a stupid account screw it, i just want to watch godzilla vs biollante because i have nothing to do and why is it so hard to just watch a movie for free why god why did they make websites that show movies for free but end up screwing you because you have to make an account!?!?
It's on VHS (1992, HBO), DVD (in Asia and Europe, though no North American release) and Laserdisc (for all 15 people who own Laserdisc players). Your best bet would be to get the international DVD and play it on an all-region system, or the VHS.
hulu.com has a decent amount to start watching Godzilla movies for free, Unfortunately this movie isn't on there... I honestly can't find ''Godzilla vs Biollante'' or ''Godzilla 1985'' anywhere on the internet which is a shame because there my favorite Godzilla movies.

One of the best Heisei Godzilla movies, for sure! Love this one. Biollante is one of my favorite Godzilla enemies of them all, as well. Thanks for posting this!
1989.........ages ago now! It was the second in the Hensei series. Although it was supposed to continue directly from Godzilla 1985, it was unlike any other Godzilla movie ever made. Arguably the best movie since the first.
He is wrong user ''Godzilla370'' ive told this guy on many occasion's that it is not a 30 minute film an it is indeed an American Reboot of the Godzilla Franchise. The 2012 Reboot in under Legendary Pictures who did (The Dark Knight, 300, The Watchmen, Inception) Concept Art was released at Comic-Con 2010 showing the Japanese Godzilla with his blue Atomic Breath, So far there going in the right direction an will Godzilla the rightful Hollywood film he deserves.
the greatest godzilla film ever made. this shit kicked so much ass that it became the 2nd movie of the franchise to receive a theatrical release in america. and its the most popular godzilla film according to american fans. i just hope the 2012 reboot will be just as awesome.
"At last! I have created the ultimate lifeform! a giant plant/clone of godzilla!"
guy2: "Uhhh, what specimen did you substitute in with Godzilla's genetic code?"
"A flower...."
guy2" If you were going to choose a plant, you should of spliced him with cannabis, that way at least everyone in a 500 mi radius would get high when zilla torch's her ass....."
@SmokenAces really, uummm, thanks i guess, is engine magic time a website because you didn't say, but i'll check and until then i guess i'll chat at you later BYE. =)
I love it how army dude (brother of guy in SpaceGodzilla) just shoots a rocket in godzillas mouth and he's like "this is kinda spicy. can i have another?"
My favorite Godzilla movie. Shame they dont have it on youtube. Although the final battle between Godzilla and biollante is.
Shame they never gave this monster a second shot in a godzilla film. The most creative monster Toho ever created.. Well the idea was given by a dentist who was a fan i read lol.
Godzilla 1954, Godzilla 1985, Godzilla vs biollante are all great. Esp since there set in a more darker atmosphere and great music score.
they should do anothe rmovie with biollante in it, i cant understand why this character is only used in the video games - the only time it looked good in a game was in the SNES godzilla game, at least give the games a real storyline.
also the largest monster(body mass) in all seires. twice bigger than destroyah and 3 time larger than ghidorah in overoll. 8 time heavier than godzilla. though her power is really weak and lame.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tohokingdom isn't right about keizer ghidorah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cuz he is taller and larger than biollante, so how could he be 120 tons less than biollante?
king ghidorah in 91 was 1.5x taller than godzilla but only few thousand tons heavier. taller =\= body mass. like the bird, the flight monster like ghdorah/ roden/mothra are more lighter in mass density& lighter skeleton in order to fly in the air to against air resistance and gravity without using too much strength.
go wiki or toho kingdom for more information......even J.J abrams had admit that biollante was the largest monster before cloverfield is out. he never mention keizer!! and how tall is kaizer? 160m!! only 40m taller than biollente but much skinnier!! it doesnt matter of mutation and that stupid wing anymore. kaizer is way skinnier and that's it!
Eh, probably just denial on the part of the Japanese, what with the baddie basically being the wet dream of tentacle rape fetishists far and wide... maybe it struck just a little too close to home for a large part of the audience.
I am so glad i kept my godzilla movies in vhs. whoever says vhs sucks must regret it. 1989.........ages ago now! It was the second in the Hensei series. Although it was supposed to continue directly from Godzilla 1985, it was unlike any other Godzilla movie ever made. Arguably the best movie since the first.

Man, I haven't seen this movie since I was four. Yet, I'm too darn lazy to ask my Mom to rent it from Blockbuster.

metalhammer104 1 year ago
@metalhammer104
He is wrong user ''Godzilla370'' ive told this guy on many occasion's that it is not a 30 minute film an it is indeed an American Reboot of the Godzilla Franchise. The 2012 Reboot in under Legendary Pictures who did (The Dark Knight, 300, The Watchmen, Inception) Concept Art was released at Comic-Con 2010 showing the Japanese Godzilla with his blue Atomic Breath, So far there going in the right direction an will Godzilla the rightful Hollywood film he deserves.

the greatest godzilla film ever made. this shit kicked so much ass that it became the 2nd movie of the franchise to receive a theatrical release in america. and its the most popular godzilla film according to american fans. i just hope the 2012 reboot will be just as awesome.
metalhammer104 1 year ago
@metalhammer104 there is no 2012 reboot its a 30 minute film about godzilla rampaging through las vegas whilst fighting hedorah

guy2: "Uhhh, what specimen did you substitute in with Godzilla's genetic code?"
"A flower...."
guy2" If you were going to choose a plant, you should of spliced him with cannabis, that way at least everyone in a 500 mi radius would get high when zilla torch's her ass....."

Great movie. Huge budget for a G film. Godzilla himself looked awesome. The series got progressively sillier again after this film.

I felt ripped off when I saw this movie. In 1985, he died, i cried. Then 1989. I cried for nothing? Well at least he's back.
mechagodzilla290 2 years ago 3
they should do anothe rmovie with biollante in it, i cant understand why this character is only used in the video games - the only time it looked good in a game was in the SNES godzilla game, at least give the games a real storyline.

biolante to me was the scariest monsta ever
Viewmast3r 2 years ago
also the largest monster(body mass) in all seires. twice bigger than destroyah and 3 time larger than ghidorah in overoll. 8 time heavier than godzilla. though her power is really weak and lame.
hanrinch 2 years ago
well actually keizer ghidorah is larger than biollante in body mass and size
Cheesetoon 1 year ago
it's just taller that's all
hanrinch 1 year ago 3
well hes still larger
Cheesetoon 1 year ago
but kaizer is way lighter than biollente in weight and smaller in overoll body mass
hanrinch 1 year ago
get ur facts right bub!!!!!! keizer ghidorah isn't WAY lighter than biollante
Cheesetoon 1 year ago
100k vs 220k and you are telling me that is no difference?
hanrinch 1 year ago
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tohokingdom isn't right about keizer ghidorah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cuz he is taller and larger than biollante, so how could he be 120 tons less than biollante?
Cheesetoon 1 year ago
king ghidorah in 91 was 1.5x taller than godzilla but only few thousand tons heavier. taller =\= body mass. like the bird, the flight monster like ghdorah/ roden/mothra are more lighter in mass density& lighter skeleton in order to fly in the air to against air resistance and gravity without using too much strength.
hanrinch 1 year ago
@hanrinch dude! keizer ghidorah is too heavy to fly!!!!!!!!! the wings were just part of the mutation that monster x went through
Cheesetoon 1 year ago
it had been booked dude, toho admit that kazer is lighter than biollante
hanrinch 1 year ago
yea right. they didnt do that to prove keizer was lighter than biollante. IT WAS JUST A MUTATION
Cheesetoon 1 year ago
go wiki or toho kingdom for more information......even J.J abrams had admit that biollante was the largest monster before cloverfield is out. he never mention keizer!! and how tall is kaizer? 160m!! only 40m taller than biollente but much skinnier!! it doesnt matter of mutation and that stupid wing anymore. kaizer is way skinnier and that's it!
hanrinch 1 year ago
@hanrinch ya well all of his weight is in muscle
Cheesetoon 1 year ago
I loved this movie, but i never understood why it didn't appeal to the Japanese crowd...was it that it was Biollante and not a classic monsteR?
JustinThoj 2 years ago
Eh, probably just denial on the part of the Japanese, what with the baddie basically being the wet dream of tentacle rape fetishists far and wide... maybe it struck just a little too close to home for a large part of the audience.
