Your (or my) distaste for drugs does not justify a system that imprisons users and non-violent "criminals". What ruins more lives, drugs or the laws intended to keep people from using them? I agree with O'Donnell's main point most emphatically. When the State's prohibition of a substance causes more harm than the prohibited substance, that prohibition should be reconsidered. This is not just a moral issue, but rather a policy issue. The State's retraction of a ban does not imply endorsement. If heroin or cocaine were legal, I would not choose to use them. The State's most legitimate course of action here is to provide accurate information and therapy programs for addicts.

For me, drug legalization is a moral issue. In a free society, we have the sovereign right over our bodies and minds. People are free to object to this (my moral compass directs me to support others' rights to express themselves) but I do not feel the State should be permitted to interfere with my right to pollute myself. In this case, this is a matter of what the State should prohibit (violence, theft, breach of contract, etc) versus matters that should be left to the individual.

I agree with O'Donnell's main point most emphatically. When the State's prohibition of a substance causes more harm than the prohibited substance, that prohibition should be reconsidered. This is not just a moral issue, but rather a policy issue. The State's retraction of a ban does not imply endorsement. If heroin or cocaine were legal, I would not choose to use them. The State's most legitimate course of action here is to provide accurate information and therapy programs for addicts.

For me, drug legalization is a moral issue. In a free society, we have the sovereign right over our bodies and minds. People are free to object to this (my moral compass directs me to support others' rights to express themselves) but I do not feel the State should be permitted to interfere with my right to pollute myself. In this case, this is a matter of what the State should prohibit (violence, theft, breach of contract, etc) versus matters that should be left to the individual.

@lrdazure pot were legal; I never smoked it, nobody ever offered it to me or anything, and I was a teen in the 70s! I wasn't religious back then and was not a big anti-drug activist. Same for my husband. Then we got the Internet in my 40's and I was SHOCKED at all the pot smokers I saw online! I thought I'd help them understand why we shouldn't use drugs to get high, legal or not! Surely they would understand and thank me for taking time out of my busy day to talk some sense into them. HA!!!
