when you have one of those dreams that you are falling and right before you fall, you wake up. thats because you have a limb of your body off of your bed. the unstability of a part of your body makes you feel alarmed and your response is negative. ive never had another one of those dreams since i was 13 because i always made sure that i had all of my limbs on my bed. lol luv ya onision

Once I had a terrifying dream, and when you feel that pain in your chest, it was in the dream, but the dream continued, and I kept feeling that shock to my heart because I would have multiple terrors, it was absolutely horrific, both in emotion, and in actual pain.
I've fallen from a really tall building in one of my dreams, landed on my face/chest in the dream and I instantly woke up with intense chest pain. Wasn't fun at all.
If you hit the ground in your dream and died, then anyone who DID hit the ground and died would never live to pass on the warning, therefore making this superstition false.

I had a dream I was in a tree trying to get down but the tree was growing faster than I could climb down. My sister also has dreams where she dies. And she follows to the bitter end, so to speak.

Realized it was a dream.
If I kept freaking out, my heart eventually wouldn't be able to take it - so I force myself to relax.

@OnisionSpeaks there are a lot of different explanations for different dreams. My vote is to keep a dream journal, and possibly get a dream dictionary. With the dream journal, keep it next to your bed with a pen or marker w/e and as soon as you wake up and still have the dream in mind write evrything down. Later on reflect on the journal and you might make connections between the dream world and what you've been experiencing. Actually! Call ur mom on her site it says she know a lot about dreams
I've heard that when you dream of being in a house, you are dreaming of yourself metaphorically. If I had to guess, based on the above, there is a small place inside yourself that scares you or there are feelings or thoughts that scare you. Perhaps it's an irrational fear your subconcious is trying to make you face. Or maybe you're just gay! Lol jk :D

i fall off cliffs and hitting the ground doesnt kill me in real life. i have been murdered in dreams and the dream continues on. when i am about to die in a dream or i do die i often just start over and try again like it's a video game. i die a lot in my dreams. often i feel trapped in a dream because it's like a horror video game and u have to do a certain thing to beat the villain.
It's not as interesting as some of the other ideas, but I expect maybe it just becomes part of the plot of the dream. Dreams seem weird partly because we don't plan them out before we start dreaming, anyway. Once upon a time, I had these odd dreams that were unsettling but made me really curious. I would wake up and try to go back to sleep to see how the story ended. The times it worked, there were just more things that happened. You will wake up sometime.
When I was about 6-7 I had a recurring dream that a man in a trenchcoat would come into my room while I was sleeping. He sat on my bed and he put his hand near my forehead. He had long, sharp claws and he'd lift my head up while I was still asleep, then he put one of his claws on the top of my forehead and slowly moved it down, cutting my forehead. I just found this fact interesting: apparently when we sleep and are dreaming, our brains signal special hormones to release in our bodies that paralyze us in a way so we aren't able to act out what we are dreaming in real life.
I think sometimes we have nightmares and need that shock at the end of a dream to wake us up and stop our bodies from releasing the chemical. and some people are still "paralyzed" for a minute or two immediately after they are shocked awake.
Well, not really. I always fall, jump, or get pushed off cliffs or tall buildings. I've also died in car crashes, animal attacks, murders, torture, blah,blah,blah. I was sleeping over at my friends house, and he was having a nightmare and I didn't know. He was making this sound like someone was kidnapping (yeh Im a kid) him and he was trying to say help me but they were covering his mouth. This freaked me out so I froze.
Then he stopped for a while and later it started again. I thought he was just mucking around by then so I told him to stop it.

i screamed as loud as i could. and i looked up and the ceiling looked fogy. i squinted and could just bairly make out my fiances face. outside of my dream he had come from working on his truck to check on me. I have been stuck in a dream cycle( correct term? Not sure.) What happened is I would 'wake up' in my dream, something crazy would happen, such as being trapped by and strangled by my sheets, then i wake up again, then something else happens. Recently something like that happened to me, but it was in real life, not a dream. I was exploring this old church with my youth group, and we had turned all of the lights off and I ended up in a room all alone without any lights and I could SWEAR I saw somthing move, but instead of leaving the room, I huddled in the corner and ust started crying because I felt like I was dying.

you don't need to worry about dying from holding your breath. it is physically impossible to do so (unless there's a brain issue like brain damage or a psychological issue or something that could make it possible) because when you hold your breath for to long your body will subconsciously take over and force you to breathe. if you're sleeping while you do it you'll 1. likely wake up like you did 2. whether you wake up or not you will start gasping for air
Well I personally have had quite a few death dreams but so far I'm still breathing. In one nightmare I was shot and my spirit separated from my body and I took revenge on the killer in order to save my family and my (now ex) boyfriend and when I woke up my torso hurt really bad but nothing horrible happened. i think if u die n a dream you could die in real life because you're mind believes that you are dead. During REM sleep your body is functioning as though you are awake, such as breathing rate and heart rate. This makes dreams seem real, so death in a dream may feel like death in real life and your mind could go blank.
I've fallen from buildings and landed without waking up. It hurt and then I just sort of went to sleep in my dream. I then transitioned into a completely different dream. You don't die lol.
Usually if you die in your sleep it can be from reaccuring nightmares and it just gives you such a fright that you have a heart attack and you just die. I saw this happen in 1000 ways to die... well a reenactment. It doesn't exactly have a timing, one small thing can happen that shocks you so badly that it gives you a bad enough heart attack that you die. There are a lot of other ways that you can die in your dreams, but this is the one that i know the most on.
As a nursing stand point: it's said that if you die in your dreams, that you die in real life, because your mind believes it's dead, and stops the normal body functions : respiration, heart beat, etc. As for not waking up in a dream, I would assume the same. But you can be "scared to death" and die in real life

@OnisionSpeaks, I remember reading about people who supposedly have heart attacks, potentially fatal ones, with dreams such as these. I think the reason for that is with the cardiac system being controlled by the brain, though not by our obvious control. I'm not a doctor. That's what I've heard. This is actually tough to exactly know what happens since some people don't remember the dream and if they do pass away we'll never know! I hate to be so pessimistic. Hope that helps!
It is a proven fact that when you die in your dream (like falling off a building and die) cuz everyone1 knows that wen your about to die in a dream you wake up. Ive had a shocking moment where I jumped and should have woken up..but i didnt. it was like a ghost stabbing me in the spine, and I felt this crazy, tickling...painful feeling..and I panicked in my dream, which in turn woke me up, and I was having a panic attack when I woke up..and it felt awful cause I was still in that sleepy state and I didnt know what was happening.

the falling thing is definitely not true. i've hit the ground before and felt the pain and not died. i've also had dreams inside of dreams. i'll fall asleep in one dream, have a completely unrelated dream, then wake up into the first dream again. my friends and i speculated that you could die if you have so many dreams inside of dreams that you can't wake back up out of them.
I had a nightmare where I was walking around a cold hospital. I felt the breeze and the cold, bloody water between my toes. This hospital was completely deserted. Nothing but weird, "Silent Hill-type" things and I. I was just walking around but I couldn't control my own body for some reason while those... THINGS were slowly following me. when you die in a dream you wake up but sometimes that can be a slow process... when i was ten i dremt i was fighting in a mediavel war and got stabbed. it tokk me half an hour to die... not pretty. also death in a dream singifies that change is coming in your life. its one of the greatest metaphores. death is not always literal. it can be the death of an idea or belief, the change from one stage of your life to the next. and if you watch alice in wonderland, just pich yourself and youll wake up
most of my dreams are of me dying.. but i come back to life... like i start over new. but i dont mind these dreams because the setting is always beautiful, and it looks like its been shot like a movie :P so i tend to enjoy teh dreams, even though they are nightmares.

I never died when i hit the ground. i would jump off and land on the ground perfectly fine.. however i have been slashed with a knife in a dream and woke up with a cut the same spot. it's all in the mind. if you were to die that night, your dream can interpret this to you before you wake up, is what i believe anyways. just like how i was mysteriously cut.. i think my brain had a way of sending me signals saying "Hey, you got cut" .... that's my input anyways..

I read somewhere that your dreams are your 'emergency control system'. Which basically means: When you sleep your brain goes through all of the 'what-ifs', planning what you would do, etc. Say, you have a dream of being kidnapped (I have them all the time, it's my biggest fear), its your brain preparing you, so you know what you would do in that situation.

I heard that the falling sensation is supposed to be you being sucked back into your body(out of body experiences).
Once, I had the comforter up over the bridge of my nose(cold) and was almost asleep, when I felt this great, paralyzing terror. There was a lot of shaking. I was too afraid to move or move the blanket to look. I was stuck like that for a while before I lost consciousness.

I had a dream I was in a tree trying to get down but the tree was growing faster than I could climb down. My sister also has dreams where she dies. And she follows to the bitter end, so to speak.
She was pushed in front of a train and she was hit by it. She told me she'd never felt so much pain in her life, that she could FEEL and Hear her bones being crushed etc etc.
When I fall in my dreams, I wake up.

@KaioruChan The few times I Have been at the brink of death in my dreams, I have first freaked the hell out. But then I've calmed myself down, relaxed.
Realized it was a dream.
If I kept freaking out, my heart eventually wouldn't be able to take it - so I force myself to relax.
Im not saying I belive if you die in your dream, you die in reality - my sister is living proof of that..

@OnisionSpeaks there are a lot of different explanations for different dreams. My vote is to keep a dream journal, and possibly get a dream dictionary. With the dream journal, keep it next to your bed with a pen or marker w/e and as soon as you wake up and still have the dream in mind write evrything down. Later on reflect on the journal and you might make connections between the dream world and what you've been experiencing. Actually! Call ur mom on her site it says she know a lot about dreams

I've heard that when you dream of being in a house, you are dreaming of yourself metaphorically. If I had to guess, based on the above, there is a small place inside yourself that scares you or there are feelings or thoughts that scare you. It's not as interesting as some of the other ideas, but I expect maybe it just becomes part of the plot of the dream. Dreams seem weird partly because we don't plan them out before we start dreaming, anyway. Once upon a time, I had these odd dreams that were unsettling but made me really curious. I would wake up and try to go back to sleep to see how the story ended. The times it worked, there were just more things that happened. You will wake up sometime.

When I was about 6-7 I had a recurring dream that a man in a trenchcoat would come into my room while I was sleeping. He sat on my bed and he put his hand near my forehead. He had long, sharp claws and he'd lift my head up while I was still asleep, then he put one of his claws on the top of my forehead and slowly moved it down, cutting my forehead. When he got down to my nose, I woke up. Scared the shit outta me

I just found this fact interesting: apparently when we sleep and are dreaming, our brains signal special hormones to release in our bodies that paralyze us in a way so we aren't able to act out what we are dreaming in real life.
I think sometimes we have nightmares and need that shock at the end of a dream to wake us up and stop our bodies from releasing the chemical. and some people are still "paralyzed" for a minute or two immediately after they are shocked awake.

I always have the same nightmare, once in a while it's different. I do remember that when I die in a dream, I wake up. But what's scary is I can't move for a few seconds. I try, and I also try and scream, nothing happens. This all happens after I am awake. I can see, and feel, but I can't move. Then, it stops, and I scream and move again.

I was sleeping over at my friends house, and he was having a nightmare and I didn't know. He was making this sound like someone was kidnapping (yeh Im a kid) him and he was trying to say help me but they were covering his mouth. This freaked me out so I froze.
Then he stopped for a while and later it started again. I thought he was just mucking around by then so I told him to stop it.

I have been stuck in a dream cycle( correct term? Not sure.) What happened is I would 'wake up' in my dream, something crazy would happen, such as being trapped by and strangled by my sheets, then i wake up again, then something else happens. Recently something like that happened to me, but it was in real life, not a dream. I was exploring this old church with my youth group, and we had turned all of the lights off and I ended up in a room all alone without any lights and I could SWEAR I saw somthing move, but instead of leaving the room, I huddled in the corner and ust started crying because I felt like I was dying.

you don't need to worry about dying from holding your breath. it is physically impossible to do so (unless there's a brain issue like brain damage or a psychological issue or something that could make it possible) because when you hold your breath for to long your body will subconsciously take over and force you to breathe. if you're sleeping while you do it you'll 1. likely wake up like you did 2. whether you wake up or not you will start gasping for air

Well I personally have had quite a few death dreams but so far I'm still breathing. In one nightmare I was shot and my spirit separated from my body and I took revenge on the killer in order to save my family and my (now ex) boyfriend and when I woke up my torso hurt really bad but nothing horrible happened. i think if u die n a dream you could die in real life because you're mind believes that you are dead. During REM sleep your body is functioning as though you are awake, such as breathing rate and heart rate. This makes dreams seem real, so death in a dream may feel like death in real life and your mind could go blank.

Usually if you die in your sleep it can be from reaccuring nightmares and it just gives you such a fright that you have a heart attack and you just die. I saw this happen in 1000 ways to die... well a reenactment. It doesn't exactly have a timing, one small thing can happen that shocks you so badly that it gives you a bad enough heart attack that you die. There are a lot of other ways that you can die in your dreams, but this is the one that i know the most on.

As a nursing stand point: it's said that if you die in your dreams, that you die in real life, because your mind believes it's dead, and stops the normal body functions : respiration, heart beat, etc. As for not waking up in a dream, I would assume the same. They say if you have a nightmare or a random moment in your sleep when you fall in a black whole or falling off balcony or falling from something and you feel it it's meant to mean your stressed and your thinking of to many things but i have had that once where i fell into a black whole and i actually hit the ground it was horrible D:

its soooo weird ! i always go into this state where im, kind of, half asleep half awake and i always fall and the my body completely jolts and it is the scariest thing ever and i always have wondered how a mental image can have such an impact on your body!?

you probably wont see this comment but if the shock is significant enough you have a heart attack. I saw it on a thousand ways to die i forget the name at which they have given a death such as this but if you want to find out look up that episode of a thousand ways to die

@OnisionSpeaks, I remember reading about people who supposedly have heart attacks, potentially fatal ones, with dreams such as these. I think the reason for that is with the cardiac system being controlled by the brain, though not by our obvious control. I'm not a doctor. That's what I've heard. This is actually tough to exactly know what happens since some people don't remember the dream and if they do pass away we'll never know! I hate to be so pessimistic. Hope that helps!

It is a proven fact that when you die in your dream (like falling off a building and die) cuz everyone1 knows that wen your about to die in a dream you wake up. But if you dont and you dream/see yourself die...you actullay die, in your sleep. I hope you feel better Greg. I love and support you! ~emma

That pain in your chest might be a sign of heart problems you might really want to check that out with a doctor, it might be a serious problem that you have there. And I dont want you to die, so please do something about it!!
And about what you asked, I dont really know, but I think that you wake up so you wont die of fright, like have a heart attack out of panic or something. I'm not sure though, you should google it.

I actually had this weird dream that I fell 3 times between a gorge.I suffer from nightmares,sometimes I have 3 nightmares every night.It is very frustrating but since I got used to it I don't really care that much,but sometimes it just ruins my whole sleep.

That's a complicated question, and i don't think it can be answered if someone don't try it, but also then it's complicated, 'cause if they die, who will tell then, and if they don't, that wouldn't really answer your question either. Hm. But what if your nerves or heart stop in the same moment you fall from that building, mounain etc. in your dream, and it's your nerves who react the same way they would have reacted in real life? WhAt? I don't know. Hm.

Thats a hard question to answer seeing as a lot of people wake up right before they die in a dream. I guess it was almost a week ago I had a dream I was being shot at by some random guy who killed my whole family and I woke up to a feeling like a fever and couldn't help but wonder this same thing.

I've hit the ground in my dreams and couldn't wake up from the dream and just saw my body on the ground as i floated up then finally woke up ... and im still here... but even when something happens in a dream like someone attacks you or murders you. you apparently are suposed to die then too.... the worst expiernce i had in a dream was when i was 6? and i couldnt wake up and i could see myself sleeping on the coach (which i was) and i didnt wake up til 4pm even with ppl shaking me. If you die in your dream you will not die for real, but the reason people would say that you will die if you die in your dream is cause you got scaird to a point where your heart may have skip a beat or you got so scaird that your heart stop this has nothing to do with the soul. even if you got as scaird as you were in your dream the pain may come back it has happened to me too.

i had a dream once i was like 9 that i was at primary school and my class was lining up to go in to the art room at the end of recess and i started chocking and i couldnt breath and i was pale and i fainted... when i woke up my alarm was going off, i sat up and my mouth was dry, my face was cold and i looked really pale (acording to mum), i ended up drinking about 20L of water and spent the day home cause it freaked my mum out when i told her the dream i had??????

Ive had a shocking moment where I jumped and should have woken up..but i didnt. it was like a ghost stabbing me in the spine, and I felt this crazy, tickling...painful feeling..and I panicked in my dream, which in turn woke me up, and I was having a panic attack when I woke up..and it felt awful cause I was still in that sleepy state and I didnt know what was happening.

the falling thing is definitely not true. i've hit the ground before and felt the pain and not died. i've also had dreams inside of dreams. i'll fall asleep in one dream, have a completely unrelated dream, then wake up into the first dream again. my friends and i speculated that you could die if you have so many dreams inside of dreams that you can't wake back up out of them.

I had a nightmare where I was walking around a cold hospital. I felt the breeze and the cold, bloody water between my toes. This hospital was completely deserted. Nothing but weird, "Silent Hill-type" things and I. I was just walking around but I couldn't control my own body for some reason while those... THINGS were slowly following me. And there were at least one in every room I walked by. I couldn't wake up until I jumped out the window and killed myself. I felt everything. Very real, indeed.

probably true in some cases. the mind is powerful. if it believes in the nightmare so fully, it will shut your body down after your percieved death. and you will die. call it shock if you like.
nightmares tend to be our most realistic dreams, the ones we have the hardest time distinguishing from reality.

when you die in a dream you wake up but sometimes that can be a slow process... when i was ten i dremt i was fighting in a mediavel war and got stabbed. it tokk me half an hour to die... not pretty. also death in a dream singifies that change is coming in your life. its one of the greatest metaphores. death is not always literal. it can be the death of an idea or belief, the change from one stage of your life to the next. and if you watch alice in wonderland, just pich yourself and youll wake up

most of my dreams are of me dying.. but i come back to life... like i start over new. but i dont mind these dreams because the setting is always beautiful, and it looks like its been shot like a movie :P so i tend to enjoy teh dreams, even though they are nightmares.
