Let's see here...it falls about four feet onto a concrete floor that's covered with tons of blood, water and goo ... and then it needs mom to knock it into life? Big surprise there.
What I see here, is that quite possibly, a newborn baby elephant was knocked unconscious at birth because the staff arranged for the mother to birth over a concrete floor, causing the baby to come into the world by falling on its head onto concrete. In desperation, the mother finally succeeds in getting the baby breathing and on its feet. Would we let a woman give birth by letting her baby free-fall onto its head onto concrete? The hard ground is far softer than concrete.
@barbhuning Of course there are no concrete floors in nature, but I understood that the fall a baby elephant (or zebra or giraffe or...) makes at birth should actually help to make them start breathing. Just like a doctor would pat a newborn baby on the butt.
I am concerned to see that this elephant is giving birth onto a concrete floor. This should be happening on soft ground with a nest of soft plants. I'm really upset about this oversight. He even says "The baby's hit the floor and at this stage isn't moving." There seems to be absolutely no awareness that a newborn baby falling a foot onto concrete is a totally unnecessary shock, hardship and danger. I'm so glad the baby lived but I am really upset about this.
I know this is just biology and it's a part of being a mammal and it's natural and healthy and all of that but... and I am pro-elephant birth, don't get me wrong! I just wouldn't recommend eating and watching at the 1:53 mark.
@toeztocy2003 It would have made a mess, and been very unsanitary. Hy nearly always has asper spores in it, which may have harmed or killed the baby. Imagine pieces of straw sticking to the baby, perhaps poking it in the eye, etc.
Elephants give birth on plains nearly as hard as that floor. They did right to leave the straw out. Not sure if any sort of a softer mat would hold up to an elephant's footsteps anyway.:)
I cant see what im typing cause my eyes are completely flooded, but still... i wanna leave this comment as this is the most beautiful thing i've seen.... god bless them and I wish this adorable family ALL THE BEST! LOOVE ELEPHANTS!!!
Beautiful video but what the hell...making her give birth on what appears to be concrete! I'm sure that makes it even harder for the baby to get up and take those first steps, it looked extremely slick to me.
When I was a zoo keeper we used straw for birthing mothers not concrete that babies fall onto at birth causing crippling injuries brain damage & death, Maybe you could make that park environment a little more animal friendly as in natural settings.
How about getting the birthing mother to an area that isn't on a cement floor for crying out loud. Maybe get slammed on the head into a cement floor stunned the poor baby.
... hope the baby isnt dead .... come on baby ... baby? ... baby?D: ... BABY ! D'x OH ITS BREATHING ! :'DD Im so proud of you mama elephant <3 awwwh its walking <3
thanks for this amazing video, I felt like I was right there with you watching nicki delivering riski. mother elephant knew exactly what to do to make riski come around. It was great!
Put some hay down for that baby, people. Landing on concrete is a hell of way to enter th world. Chances are she has brain damage from all that time wihtout O2. and then she can't stand because of the slippery floor. There's a huge stack of hay bales behind them. Idiots.
How precious! To all you people who think that animals have no intelligence or emotions, watch this video and try to tell me that elephant wasn't worried about her baby!
This is beautiful, but I can't help thinking how much better it would be for both mother and baby if they were in the wild with sisters and aunts and her own mother helping out. The baby would drop onto the earth instead of onto a concrete floor, which would certainly be safer.\
If this is not possible, at least a more natural environment could be provided.
I don't know if the keepers go into the exhibit/enclosure with these elephants, but I'm surprised there weren't several bales of straw spread around on the floor to absorb the fluids and give the calf better traction for its first steps.
How smart of her to know how to get him to start breathing, A mother will do anything when her child is in danger, I cant care if she's human, animal, or a friggin bug, Us momma's make the world go round! ;)
@amberder7 what about the women that cant have children due to genetic issues? do we not make the world go round? ultimatly any human that has children.. ultimatly takes more land away from animals.. so its doubtful that human mothers can make the world go round
@MrsTakumi I didnt mean we actually made the world go round..srry if u dont understand it,most ppl did..basically saying mothers go threw alot just to give birth. mothers do extraordinary things for love-(Children). Love is a tremendous force in the world. Love makes the world go round.LOVE is when I think of being a MOM so there for that is why I said us mothers make the world go round. u dont have to give birth to be a mother! ppl have their own sayings, like money makes the world go round.etc
@MrsPopcorn9119 Yes, that "cry of desperation" sent chills down my spine and tears down my cheeks. I wasn't sure I liked the video at first, I don't personally find the birthing process a beautiful thing, but watching that elephant momma basically forcing life into her baby really changed my mind. She's magnificent.
didnt like watching the kicking but after watching the rest good job mom her cry upset me such awe inspiring creatures glad baby survived
