Wow. I can't believe I haven't heard this until now. Simply sensational. The prelude is so chromatic, I love it. And so open to interpretation. She makes it swirl. This is the best prelude I've heard out of the last 20 I've heard. And wow, what a beastly fugue. I think I'm going to learn this one.
First time I'm really impressed by Hewitt. She's making sense, even with the horrible acoustics of the place. The prelude as always doesn't match the fugue in the least. And the fugue really hit home for me.
Actually, this whole video made me cringe - the absolutely affected speech and then the completely twee playing. No guts, no angst, no depth and a big fat zero in terms of musical journey. Shameful, really.
@vandral1234 That's the way she talks. Too make fun of her speaking voice, ignoring her tremendous insights into the music says more about you than her. Bach doesn't need angst. And there is depth, you are just shallow, and therefore, can't take that journey.
@Shanktorsion Lolz. I was joking. I found it funny you would leave a comment criticizing someone's opinion full of grammatical and word usage errors. I drew the conclusion that English must not be your native tongue. I must reconsider now; your reply to me shows much improvement. <- (also a joke)
Let us be honest. Ms. Hewitt's introduction/analysis is in vein. The only thing I learned from the beginning of this video is Angela Hewitt likes to hear herself talk.
I was the same way. Initially Chopin was my favorite. Now I listen to more Bach. I still love Chopin but I think for some people, Bach takes a while longer to be truly appreciated. BTW Chopin (as well as Beethoven, & Schumann) revered Bach and required his students to study Bach religiously. Chopin's Preludes are dedicated to Bach and were based on the WTC cycle.
This is WONDERFUL!!! The fugue is extraordinary but I think the prelude can have a more reflective nature than she gives it. It can be meditated upon rather than danced to, and I disagree that all of his works "ultimately" are dances. Many, including I think this prelude, are deeply spiritual reflections.
I have never known what I felt about Bach until watching Angela play the WTC II and now I love him! I still prefer Chopin to any other composer (his Nocturnes are truly amazing) but Bach has definitely moved up on my list
Bach and Mozart were among Chopin's favourite composers so he was undoubtedly influenced by these two masters. I have found that many people who like Chopin also have an appreciation of Bach.
I like Angela's work, but sometimes I find it could be more firey. I still give it a well deserved 5 stars.
beautiful performance of an amazing work!

One historic fact: The first four notes on the fugue are supposed to be related to the hammering of nails in a crucifixion! Wow.

no one has surpassed Glend Gould's interpretation of the WTC

@bluesyboypete
Sure, Angela Hewitt has surpassed Gould's staccato hammering.

Perfect tempo for the fugue!
The prelude is kind of dull
(fortunately
we get to watch computer-generated columns fly by ...
it makes it so much more interesting ...
NOT).

Exemplary performance, except fugue is excessively rapid.
MusicalClassics 2 years ago
@MusicalClassics I dont think so, the fugue is suited for a faster tempo and I think in this regard Hewitt captured the atmosphere thereof well.
