@GCD89 only mod is acclumaters(sic) on the props allowing the engines to be restarted if needed from the feathered position, the Commander is stock otherwise!
@GCD89 According to him it is a stock aircraft. He said that it can perform almost any maneuver that a fighter can perform and it all depends on just how precise that the aircraft is flown. He never over stresses the airframe because he is totally aware of its limitations. And, as we all know, he can fly it more precisely than any pilot who ever lived. He is the absolute master of anything that he flys.
It took massive legal effort to get him his medical back - had NOTHING to do with gliding an old warbard down. In fact he passed Australia's medical and check rides and was able to perform there and after wards he was given his medical back without having to do a checkride.
The Aero Commander was the only twin engined plane thatw as certified for the President of the USA ( Ronald Reagen I think at the time ) was allowed to fly in due to its strucual rigidity
A few years back, the FAA revoked his commercial medical certificate basically for being too old. He fought it in court, and they cited an incident a few weeks earlier where he had blown an engine in a warbird 20 miles out over the Pacific and managed to glide it back to a safe landing. His certificate was reinstated.
It was actually a slow roll followed by a spin, to disorient the terrorist pointing the gun to his head. It worked out fine, and the pilot landed the 737.
Just defeat the GPWS with a push button on the panel. Have to do that all the time when flying into non-NOAA private airports. The GPS doesn't "know they're there" and will say "terrain ahead, terrain ahead...pull up, pull up!!!" Scares the passengers to death!
That Saberliner is now at Spartan College in Tulsa, OK. Students used to do run-ups on its engines at the airport. It's really cool to get to see her fly.
I got a chance to wrench on this bird by accident in 88'. The Ferry pilot shut down an engine due to a severe oil leak. When we started opening up the cowls, we also wiped down the oil mess on top of the wing. That was when we noticed a number of the loose, smoking and dished rivets up there from years of positive "g" airshow routines. While still within its design perameters, constant stress by airshow routines did indeed begin to take its toll on this glamerous bird.
That Shrike is one of the best built Twins ever made. If not the best. Try those maneuvers in your 421, Seneca, king air...bla bla bla & you'll be a smoking hole in the ground!

I wonder if it was Bob Hoover who flew the plane in a scene from the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" with Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett.

@billideaux
According to IMDB,
That would be Paul Mantz and Frank Tallman.

What kind of mods does his Aero Commander have? There's no way a stock Aero Commander 500 would be able to hold up to aerobatics
