  • 3:15 must be dangerous to take footage at this angle, even if blanks are used.

  • They built stills because whiskey was currency. You could trade it for anything; put your kids through college, etc. The Ulster men at the racetrack (in episode 3?) sounded just like my grandfather! (a western Kentucky farmer, never travelled farther than Dollywood in his life! LOL)

  • Northern Kentuckians say "please" instead of "beg pardon" when they didn't quite hear what you said. It's basically the English translation of the German usage of "bitte".

  • I lived in Knoxville, Tennessee (near the Appalachians) for 14 years and I heard the Appalachian speech even there. People said 'flare' for flower, 'aire' for hour, etc. It was an education!

  • We see that all the time when an American news team does an article in the UK and they interview the local people. Often they will put in subtitles where as to me, they are not necessary. Depends on your background.

  • Am I the only one who doesn't think the subtitles for the Appalachian folks weren't necessary?

    yup. My dad's family is from West Pennsylvania, but I don't have the accent, and I understood it perfectly.
