GFR was iconic in their time. many ppl don't know that one of the reasons the never received their due notoriety was because of the fact that they were a "straight" band that didnt use drugs. unheard of in that era as it was, it cost them a large following because they weren't "cool". Mark Farner and the rest of the railroad had more untaped talent than most of today's musicians can muster.

One of my all-time favorites cuts off of a very important album from my formative years of music "education." As teens, we absolutely wore this vinyl disc out playing it on dad's over-stressed stereo equipment. I don't imagine his speakers were ever the same! The thundering bass lines throughout were as driving as they were melodic. The final statement of the main theme at 8:45 is a perfect climax to simple but infectious early hard-rock classic. Brilliant!
When this music came out it was great to listen to. I don't know if was the times we were in, or the other music that was out, but it sounded good then, & still does! Why compare??? Turn it up on a big set of speakers until the bass vibrates your chest, & than compare. 2 speakers-in stereo.

Always liked GFR. Had Farner stuck to vocals and rhythm, and hired a real lead guitarist instead of adding keyboards, the haters might would have let up. The concerts were powerful, the songs were good, Brewer and Schacher held their own, but damn, these 'solos' are brutal. And yes, I can play lead quite well. Even non-guitarists recognise Farner's inabilities.
@kdx220a Yeah Mark wasn't the best lead player in the world, but I think his solos fit Grand Funk very well. He did tend to favor straight rock and roll, and the minor pentatonic for his solos. They also tend to be fairly easy to play. Look at GFR now. I like Bruce Kulick and all, but it just ain't Mark

One of my all-time favorites cuts off of a very important album from my formative years of music "education." As teens, we absolutely wore this vinyl disc out playing it on dad's over-stressed stereo equipment. I don't imagine his speakers were ever the same! The thundering bass lines throughout were as driving as they were melodic. The final statement of the main theme at 8:45 is a perfect climax to simple but infectious early hard-rock classic. Brilliant!

When this music came out it was great to listen to. I don't know if was the times we were in, or the other music that was out, but it sounded good then, & still does! Why compare??? Turn it up on a big set of speakers until the bass vibrates your chest, & than compare. 2 speakers-in stereo.

Always liked GFR. Had Farner stuck to vocals and rhythm, and hired a real lead guitarist instead of adding keyboards, the haters might would have let up. The concerts were powerful, the songs were good, Brewer and Schacher held their own, but damn, these 'solos' are brutal. And yes, I can play lead quite well. Even non-guitarists recognise Farner's inabilities.

@kdx220a Yeah Mark wasn't the best lead player in the world, but I think his solos fit Grand Funk very well. He did tend to favor straight rock and roll, and the minor pentatonic for his solos. They also tend to be fairly easy to play. Look at GFR now. I like Bruce Kulick and all, but it just ain't Mark
