I think you've got take things case by case with regards to 'golliwog'. I think the toys were meant to be inoffensive. I just read about this story ten minutes ago. I'm a black American, and have never heard of this word golliwog. When I did a web search, and saw the pictures of the doll, I could understand why black people in the U.K. would be offended by it. The fact that so many white people don't, is disturbing to say the least.

im with ukdotcom look at the way young people are today primarily due to the influence of black culture. White kids talking like black kids, acting like black kids, dressing like black kids, specifically gang culture. I'm no racist and i don't mean to generalize, but half the crime in the uk is caused by blacks.

Its wrong to say half of crime is committed by blacks. No you are not racist, but crime has a broad meaning. Individuals in America and the UK who caused the current harsh economic climate, committed Economic crimes. Paedophilia is a sex crime. There is no research in the UK to suggest that half of such crimes is committed by blacks. Environmental crimes and corporate manslaughter and accident are crimes too. So also is Shoplifting and kindred offences.

I understand the N word being offensive even though black people themsevles use it but Golliwog is no where near as bad... most black people laugh at that word, well most of my black friends do.
What i dont get is white people are allowed to be called "whitetrwash" and apparently thats okay. Also the P word IMo is bad but is it any different to people calling us Brits?? What else can the word Pakistani be shortened to?

Gael Monfils DOES look like a golliwog. He is black, always smiling and has a hairstyle which resembles a golliwog. She didn't make the remark about the Williams sisters or other black tennis players, just this one because he is always smiling and has "golly hair"

Exactly, referring a black person to a golliwog may be offensive but if it's not said with venom or hatred, that does not mean the person saying it should be sacked from their job.
A reprimand would do. CT did not use the 'n' word nor did she say golliwog with any hatred in her tone.
The only hatred came from the BBC and the idiots who wanted her sacked.

I think you've got take things case by case with regards to 'golliwog'. I think the toys were meant to be inoffensive. Whereas, in Noddy, they were obviously right to change characters, since the golliwogs were usually villains. And as for this, would you say it to a black person's face or call them wog? Could saying that someone looks like a golliwog ever be complimentary. If not, then it must be offensive to call a black tennis player a golliwog, right? That's just logic.

All I see happening now is endless issues developed from a highly detrimental form of 'Political Correctness'. Granted, we do need to avoid racism and rascist imagery but I'm continually annoyed that today, in the UK, our own culture is behind sidelined in favour of Muslim culture. I see it all the time. even recently, in nearby Livcerpool, two hoteliers have been arrested and will be tried for simply defending the Christian faith with a Muslim guest - a guest who began the issue herself.

@LimitedPassions How do you "defend the faith WITH someone", what an absurd sentence. no ones gonna get arrested for a discussion. An no muslim is gonna march into a hotel and start yelling about their faith in a christian owned hotel.
And all culture is shit anyway, In fact I'm annoyed by anyone who HAS a culture, we're INDIVIDUALS, culture is something that should be constantly changing as we become more globalised.

@LimitedPassions ...irritating when an opposing culture is transported IN BULK, shoved slap bang face to face with a different culture, the immigrants basically cordon off their own land, the native people are suddenly alienated in their own land.
This is obviously antagonistic.
Different cultures mean different moralities!
And you've got to suddenly deal with it.
This is done deliberately by the ruling classes so that they can live off the sparks generated.
Better if they come as individuals.
