Here's how I think of it. For all we know, Matt was wearing a bullet proof vest with blood packets and he got back up when the coast was clear. Takada in her fear spelled Mello's name wrong but he pretended to be dead and escaped at the last minute. L made a deal with Rem that if she pretended to kill him Misa would be safe and Light would eventually be punished. Explanations for everything!
