  • Sweet vibrato!

  • Boy, after commenting on his bad performance in the Hamburger Concerto live performance, I watch this and Jan's performance is so smooth and flawless I can say that 33 years have been good to him. Can't believe it is the same guy! I am still wondering about the ax...is it really a modified Les Paul Personal/Professional or something entirely different? He played this instrument when I saw him play in Nov. 1973 but now with three pick ups and a whammy. His technique in this is outstanding!

  • @DonDandee I too have been intrigued by this g'tar. Yes it is the same top of the range in 1969/70 ebony Les Paul Personal instrument seen in the film of Le Clochard in the Castle. Jan basically dumped the slanted pick ups and had the top re done with diff P.ups over the years. He plays this g'tar because he loves the neck in particular.

  • @deepindercheema and @DonDandee

If I'm not mistaken, this is a Les Paul custom 1959 reissue with an extra pickup added. But then again I could be completely wrong, becouse you never know with Jan. He has so manny g'tars, an virtually non in original setup. One thing is certain: this is not his Personal.

What ever guitar it is, his play is briljant.

  • @skamiel I have to agree with you his playing is brilliant. You are incorrect about the guitar being a 1959 Reissue. No 1959 guitar would have slanted fingerboard at last fret. This came in 1969. The reason why I am certain is that I bought a 1969 Personal and compared my g'tar with Jan's when last he came to UK. I was always interested in his claim about the neck he said mine felt no as good as his. When I saw his close up it had the same 2 big plates in the back of the body as mine.

  • The master himself.

    Speechless!!!

  • He had his original LP Personal highly modified as it appears in the earlier Focus video clips (read the May 1975 article in Guitar Player magazine). All the stock LP Personal controls have been removed, along with some major body resurfacing. Yes, he modifies virtually every guitar he plays.

  • i love that guy

  • Go Jan ! He was shreddin when Van Shmalen & manglestine were babes in the manger!

although they grew up to be pretty good , but this guy is one of the alltime greats!

  • This man is a total GUITAR BEAST!!!

    Chops for everyone too...

    Nice post...

  • Akkerman kicks ass!

  • Love this DVD and I am a huge JA fan. However, this is not a 'true' live clip. Look at around 34 secs. Jan turns to adjust an amp setting and the playing carries on. This occurs quite a few times (4:41 onwards) and the timing looks out all the way through. The video and the audio tracks are not from the same show and have been patched together.

I have no issue with that if it was for tecnnical reasons or even if Jan just made a few mistakes. But it should have been mentioned on the DVD

  • @hulldanfan

If you listen to House of the king from the same occasion there is a lot of annoying hum and noise from JAs guitarr. Could it be that is the reason? Is only the guitar dubbed? (No reason not to mention it though.)

  • @musikintresserad

I have watched carefully and its definitely a different audio track all the way through and there are very few close-ups. It would be almost impossible to mix a live guitar track from one show with the audio and video of 3 other musicians from another live show. Its possible that it was done for technical reasons, but why not say ??

  • @hulldanfan I will ask Jan when I see him.

  • @schaaapje123

Cool - let me know what he says (you can also ask him about when we are getting a new studio album and whether he will do any UK dates this year)
