POLTAIR..u are so very true. With my German background I know the same fate (or worse ) awaited anyone who did not answer the call up. Conscientious objectors were not allowed to join the likes of ARP, they simply 'disappeared' . It was a WORLD war and, with exception of the evil dictators and hench men, ALL the war dead should be remembered. Ps before anyone gets on their high horse, the other half of my family came from London and were bombed out in Apr 41 so I can speak for both sides ;-)
For every meter they advanced, 2 soldiers died, for every bunker secured, 4 soliders died, to secure France, more then 1million soldiers died, to secure our future, more then 10million soldiers died, THEY DISERVE RESPECT...
People tend to forget this movie was made for American audiences by American film makers. In the USA most movies are made FOR PROFIT and this one succeeded in that regard. I've watched Russian films as well as those made by the French and the English. They were all slanted to make their men seem the most heroic soldiers since Alexander the Great. Quite commonplace and certainly not worth an uproar.
Love this film. Growing up I watched it practically every day. My Navy veteran dad made sure his son got his daily dose of heroics. I'm 19 now, and go to Fort Benning, The Home of the Infantry, in February. God bless the men who fought and died to give us our freedom.
Hollywood, stop making silly movies like those of comic book icons. Make again these type of epic movies. Steven Speilberg, hope you are reading this.

@STFCstoneroses Yeah he is my hero. He was in the Royal Welch Fusiliers and if I remember right he was on the second wave of troops in. He said lots of the hard work had been done and as you would know we English had it easy to what the USA had. He went on into Europe where they fished out the loose German units. He didn't really talk to much about it but real soldiers don't do they ?. believe it or not it was the last time he left England. LOL
Americans lent great assistance in WW2, but by no means won the war. It's nice to see such patriotism, but it's better placed in situations where warranted.
Sorry to upset you tippy 4674, but you did not give the brits supplies before 1941.
Look up your history yourself. Typical US hyperbole and misinformation.
You SOLD the Brits supplies.
And you only joined in actively when you realised that your own security and trading position was being seriously threatened. Which is the same stance you adopt to this very day
All the best actors in this film.................................mind you my dad was in D.DAY and he said the yanks didnt give a crap they just kept pushing and pushing and they lost so many men and the beach.
Goes to show we make a great team.........................even if the rest of the world hate us.
Excuse me but by by the time America entered the war in 1941 Russia had been invaded, the Battle of Britain had ended with british victory, and was commencing proper night bombings of germany, El Alamein was about to take place and the battle of Stalingrad had begun, the turning point when Germany began being forced back. whether or not America had stepped in Germany could well have been defeated. Perhaps not as early and with a lot more men lost for the allies, but they would have beendefeated
and perhaps some literature from both sides to inform you more about the U.S. than easily biased current news. Unfortunately, following most of todays young people, you have fallen into the trend of listening to the most radical and flashy ideals than factual and unbiased.
because of uninformed jealousy and resentment that we couldnt come to your rescue earlier, but think about this: 1. We could have let you fall to Nazi Germany, foreseeing that we would have too many losses 2. We could have joined earlier, and since we had not had the time to mobilize our forces or research into better equipment, we could have fallen right alongside you. 3 We do what we did because it was the best choice. You see, maybe you should pay more attention to history books
Explain why yanks think they run the world? Lets face it, you just love claiming the glory. WWII started in 1939, you arseholes didn't join until 1941.
@angelfire1965 yeah, because we were attacked dipshit, and though we probably would have joined later, we put our sad trust in you to handle it.... well looked how that turned out. Another thing, do you not remember the lend lease agreement, we still helped, and dont give me shit about how we werent putting any of our own countrymen's lives at stake, the merchant marines suffered many casualties throughout the war. It seems to me that you are just another angry foreigner that hates the U.S.
@Myles0Harcourt ...All the military branches in the USA totalled 174,000 men in 1940. What do you expect? The US to go dashing off on a suicide mission just to put in a token appearance? It takes TIME to raise an army almost from scratch and produce all the equipment they need. Not only that but the USA supplied equipment to Russia, England, France and Australia in addition to what was needed by our troops.. I'd hardly call that "dithering about".
I will agree that lend-lease was invaluable (even though we did have to pay for it) and that once you finally entered you did get stuck in. You were selling off the equipment to us under lend lease, and as you were not fighting a war you didn't need it. America's industrial capacity was even then greater than that of the UK and yet we managed to build up an armed forces which were way behind those of Germany in 1937 to one which was almost even in 1939.
@angelfire1965 By your language, it appears that you are a "bloody brit", correct me if Im wrong. It seems that you were on your way to losing anyway, so never forget you were apart of that world whose asses we saved.
I don't think we could have launched an invasion of Europe alone. But I do think we could have quite easily held off an invasion of Britain in December 1941
The longest day is gone with World War II but not with America, which has been involved in literally all battles and war, big and small, even till today. When will peace come?
The theme sound was composed by Paul Anka and is used as one of the official Marches of the Canadian Armed Forces currently.
Some actors such as John Wayne and Richard Burton looked far too old compared to the actual front line soldiers who took part in the battle. They should be about 20 to 25 years old (about Paul Anka's age when the movie was made). Thus Paul Anka's role as a Ranger is correct, John Wayne's role as paratrooper looked unrealistic.
@barrhavener by the time that operation overlord was put into effect, they were taking from a much larger age group than a current military would draw from. Seeing soldiers in their 40's was not un-common, especially when they were senior officers (John Wayne being a colonel). Most workers at the time were also blue collar so they were in much better physical shape than the average 40 year old today.
@sastri0918 Amen. I loved Rod Steiger's line in the movie: "You remember it... You remember every bit of it, because we are on the eve of a day people are going to talk about long after we are dead and gone... you want to know something - it gives me goose pimples just to be part of it."
last year i decided to through in some movies when i was teaching american history, so many out there that i had to choose a select few, spanning different wars, civil war i showed glory and gettysburg, world war I, the red baron and joyeux noel, world war II, i showed the desert fox, the longest day, Patton and Downfall, when it came to vietnam conflict, i showed we were soldiers and hamburger hill, it was hard but i showed all the movies and all my students loved it take care
I had the absolute privilege and honor of meeting a gentleman at my work a few days ago who was at Normandy as a young private with the U.S. Army. Being a veteran myself, I was respectful and only asked the questions I knew I could ask. It was like talking to History itself. He told me that they were supposed to have landed on Utah Beach, but ended up on Omaha because of the rough tide. All he remembers is the Germans shooting and shooting non-stop. Took all day to get the ground on the bluffs.
Many soldiers, from Canada, England, the U.S., and many more countries died for YOUR FREEDOM to NOT have a nazi flag over your house today. Please give a moment of silence for those who died today, those brave airmen, sailors, army men, and marines. Even non-Americans can appreciate the thing these brave soldiers did, that day, on those blood-soaked beaches of Normandy. THANK U ALL VETERANS OF THIS BATTLE AND OF ALL WARS. God bless the USA. And for whatever ur country says, I say that too.
I think many non-Americans can appreciate it a whole lot more. A man was killed last week by a German bomb just 2 miles from my house. The war was on many countries who were fighting. For some of us the war is still here.
Hail to Britain!
Veterans from the whole world are remembered by this isle!
@leeham991 WOW a Brit that actually appreciates us. Most Brits i know hate America and all its done but im gglad there are people like you still around
The British government ruined this country. Propaganda education and constant lies have made a country full of people more concerned with getting pissed every weekend and having no opinion with actually having things go well. Americans, as our greatest allies, are having their reputation among Britons shattered because we are all supposed to hate those who don't have open ended immigration.
@USMCagnew Amen. I loved Rod Steiger's line in the movie: "You remember it... You remember every bit of it, because we are on the eve of a day people are going to talk about long after we are dead and gone... you want to know something - it gives me goose pimples just to be part of it."
I can appreciate your comment, I really do. But why don't you refer to the Sovjet soldier deads? Why don't you refer to the Polish, French, Dutch, Yugoslavian deads? Why don't you refer to the more then 12 million Russian soldiers who died during WW2? 1/12 of the Russian military casualties is equal to all the military deads of Canada, UK and USA together! Don't be blind and HONOUR ALL THE SOLDIERS WHO DIED, NOT JUST THE WESTERN ONES.
@WorldWar2Boy Why does he have too?Because you say so? Russians ?? Stalin Killed more people than Hitler during his rein you ass...and those heroic soldiers helped, and the ones that didn't were killed, and if all this man wants to remember is our own then so be it. The Russians can kiss my ass.
@WorldWar2Boy Even you're missing the German soldiers who died, yes, Hitler was evil, the Nazi's were evil, the SS, sure but the MAJORITY of the German military didn't share the ideals, they were soldiers too. Don't forget them.
@USMCagnew True, great Salute and R.I.P to all. But do you know something ?, that American bankers, and corporation like Rockefeller, Rothschild, Warburgs, Queen of Netherlands and many more were supporting ally side and Hitlers side. So in the end middle and poor class was and is dieing while global elite, no matter which side, are working together.
@Ultraevil88 Yeah I was told that by my dad. But if he was here he would tell you that he would do it all again. He told me that the candle of the wicked shell be put out. I did not know what what sides he was on about but I know what he saw over there never left him.
@frageater16 "Peaceful Germans?" My grandfather, who came to the US in 1925 and worked for Alcoa as an "Essential War Worker" during WW2 said there were no German victims of WW2 over the age of about 12. He said they ALL cheered Hitler in 1941 when they were winning, and only became "Peaceful Germans" when the war was over. He had no use for his brothers and nephew who fought for Nazi Germany. Germany may be our friend now, but they weren't innocent victims then.
@Cruiserfrank FUCKING AMERICAN IDIOT, do you really think EVERY SINGLE german unit was a nazi scumbag???? did you think every japanese soldier was crzazy and courageously????? do you think all scandinavian people are blond????? my grandfather was in ww2 as a child and SAW the germans marching in the streets singing songs etc. you stupid retarded american, u probaly dont know where europe is stupid ***************************
@frageater16 totaly agree... germans gave my grandma candy and oranges and played whit her... they never beat no one from my famely... but the traitors did... I think we should hate traitors more then our enemys...
@USMCagnew god bless even german soldiers, maybe you forgot to mention that lots of them were forced to fight for hitler. and the y had to ifthey wanted to survive. Peace to all...
:) i catch myself whistling this theme every now and again at random moments...
Great film and tribute (the extras on the dvd are quite poignant too with the director visiting the beaches and bridgeheads at the time of the film being made.)
66yrs to a day the night before the real 'Longest Day'....never to forget those brave men.

when are they going to release the colour version of the longest day and was d day just a showpiece instead going through italy and across...and if there had been no d day would the russians have marched all the way to the french coast...then the channel would have been the iron curtain
Very Good movie lots of real history action and other good stuff these are the best world war two movies now a lot them are just stupid love drama war movies Great Quote " There Are two kinds of people on this beach those who are dead and those who are gonna die! " Good Quote
@MrRolex96: yeah man, that was a hell motivating quote. But I think it was like: "Two kinds of people will remain on this beach", and if we are totally involved in the movie, we can feel the powerful emotional turmoil after hearing those words.
wait until u see the new series coming out this year from steven spielburg and tom hanks. Its called the Pacfic and is a 10 part tv series for HBO based on the true stories just like band of brothers was.
I just wish the world would remember WHY this battle was fought. The music is great I love the movie. But I am still worried that the world still has their collective heads in the ground.

@sastri0918 Amen. I loved Rod Steiger's line in the movie: "You remember it... You remember every bit of it, because we are on the eve of a day people are going to talk about long after we are dead and gone... you want to know something - it gives me goose pimples just to be part of it."

@sastri0918 both movies are dead on accurate...another one is "The Battle of Britain"

A great war movie, and I honor those brave Men who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The WW2 Museum in New Orleans is a must take in for anyone whose family served so valiantly.
A great score befitting a great movie with a great cast of great actors.

USMCagnew 1 year ago 57
@USMCagnew
I think many non-Americans can appreciate it a whole lot more. A man was killed last week by a German bomb just 2 miles from my house. The war was on many countries who were fighting. For some of us the war is still here.
Hail to Britain!
Veterans from the whole world are remembered by this isle!
leeham991 1 year ago
@leeham991 WOW a Brit that actually appreciates us. Most Brits i know hate America and all its done but im gglad there are people like you still around
Snako85 1 year ago
@Snako85
Thats the short version anyway.
leeham991 1 year ago
@Snako85 we do not all hate the stats some of us hate how some of you keep going on about saving our ass In WW2.

Godspeed to everyone who died during WW2!

Trashcansam123 1 month ago

Ultraevil88 8 months ago
@Ultraevil88 Yeah I was told that by my dad. But if he was here he would tell you that he would do it all again. He told me that the candle of the wicked shell be put out. I did not know what what sides he was on about but I know what he saw over there never left him.

@USMCagnew or those who were forced to fight for nazi germany who actually are peacefull germans.
frageater16 7 months ago
@frageater16 "Peaceful Germans?" My grandfather, who came to the US in 1925 and worked for Alcoa as an "Essential War Worker" during WW2 said there were no German victims of WW2 over the age of about 12. He said they ALL cheered Hitler in 1941 when they were winning, and only became "Peaceful Germans" when the war was over. He had no use for his brothers and nephew who fought for Nazi Germany. Germany may be our friend now, but they weren't innocent victims then.
Cruiserfrank 6 months ago
@Cruiserfrank FUCKING AMERICAN IDIOT, do you really think EVERY SINGLE german unit was a nazi scumbag???? did you think every japanese soldier was crzazy and courageously????? do you think all scandinavian people are blond????? my grandfather was in ww2 as a child and SAW the germans marching in the streets singing songs etc. you stupid retarded american, u probaly dont know where europe is stupid ***************************

Great film and tribute (the extras on the dvd are quite poignant too with the director visiting the beaches and bridgeheads at the time of the film being made.)

Very Good movie lots of real history action and other good stuff these are the best world war two movies now a lot them are just stupid love drama war movies Great Quote " There Are two kinds of people on this beach those who are dead and those who are gonna die! " Good Quote
MrRolex96 2 years ago 2
@MrRolex96: yeah man, that was a hell motivating quote. But I think it was like: "Two kinds of people will remain on this beach", and if we are totally involved in the movie, we can feel the powerful emotional turmoil after hearing those words.
