Yes, some of them were oppressors, but many did a lot for African development: they built schools and provided basic medication for their workers. To put it into practical perspective here are the names of main ethnic groups in Zimbabwe: Shona tribes: Zezuru, Korekore, Manyika, Rozwi, Karanga. Zulu tribes: Ndebele, Kalanga. I am familiar with quite a few books written by different authors, starting with Livingstone and ending up with Mugabe's history rewriters. Nothing gives better understanding of the past than reading about a same event from several authors having different perspectives: you can clearly see attempts to distort or withhold information and can filter it out. Currently I have no testimonies on whites using "divide and conquer" in Z; I have proofs (which I already quoted) of blacks using this method.
