  • Hey girl, I just wanted to say I like your video a lot. I didn't realize there were so few HOH people that made vids about their own experiences, so your video in turn inspired me to finally make my own vid about being HOH! Anyway, thank you for posting it!

  • @SakuraCassandra I'm proud. Thank you for taking your time to watch this video. I'm glad that my video is getting many attention and it continues to inspire others like yourself. Congrats w/ your video and it is making a difference.

  • i always was trying 2 explain 2 people that im hoh. You know what happened once? i was trying 2 explain to a girl at the camp that im hoh, she said 'i understand' and later the same day, she said to another girl that im 'DEAF and nothing less.'i was right next to her, she really thought i couldnt hear her. i explained her again, she said 'theres no difference'... in my mind I gave her a punch and nobody couldn't stop me.

believe me, she really was a bitch and snob. there was a fire in my heart!

  • @mariab0609 that's exactly what some people do, they don't get it and your example is just a perfect example. Ahh it's annoying but not many people would understand what you meant. I feel you. I feel your frustrations. Thanks for sharing your story here. Commenting as well.. :)

  • Nice vid! Was looking for some people part of HoH culture. I recently became HoH almost a year ago, i'm 18. I have a pretty bad case of tinnitus and Severe hearing loss in left ear and moderate-moderate severe in right, mostly to higher pitches. I've been learning to sign for the past 2 years as well, and have really embraced it, a lot of the time I prefer to sign over speak, even though my friends tell me I still sound just like a hearing person most of the time. Glad to find this topic! Ty!

  • Okay, Im not deaf but I see what you are saying. I seen that happened allot when person comes in to contact with a hard of hearing or deaf person. But thanks for clearing that up. Even though I kinda knew what the difference was you just helped me more. :)

  • YOU DID A GOOD JOB WITH THOSE VIDEO THO.

  • Hi Sweetlikez,

While looking for some materials for my lesson in special education, I came across your video. Thank you for letting us know more about your own thoughts. It is sad that some people have some discrimination treating people with disabilities, but there are also a lot of people who are ready to be their friends and to to treat them well. And a lot of people dared not show their own weakness. You are an exception, I think. Hope to know more about you. Can we become friends?

  • @gemini8403 Thank you!!! Glad you understood what I meant! I don't know why your comment is listed and flagged as a spam when you're not saying anything that is wrong.

  • iim hard of hearing and i do talk and asl that also.

  • I know how you feel it's been hard that we in different worlds and people didnt understand that at all. thank for explain to them make sure them are understand that.

  • @HOTRUCA You're very welcome! :)

  • that is the truth because i am hard of hearing i talk and sign

  • @369dramaqueen yay!!! thanks for watching and commenting :)

  • this is the truth because i am hard of hearing and do sign dont get it mixed up please

  • I'm curious. Do you find it insulting that others assume you are Deaf or use sign language? It seems that way because of how you present yourself here. Like you're insulted if someone thinks you know sign language.

  • @Banerika hey! thanks for watching this video!! I was nervous when i was doing this.. but it is kind of is insulting when I really don't know or use ASL regularly. When I get people approaching to me assuming that I do know ASL and when I tell them no, they would ask me "why?" or "how come?" just out of curiosity. I mean it's good sometimes, but when I get asked constantly, its just a stereotype and I'm trying to break that stereotype.

  • sweetlikez @Banerika and also, I think ASL is amazing. I'm not insulted by that language. I don't feel the need to use it when I'm fine with speaking and lip reading. Every HOH person is different. I may seem like I'm insulted in this video, but it is only because I've lived that life & still am, it's personal issue and I know how exhausting it can be to repeat my story to those who don't know and people I barely know (aka strangers) pretty much everyday of my life. Great question by the way!

  • @sweetlikez, I've got several HOH friends, and you're right, everyone is different. They all have had different educational backgrounds, different training with some having "oral" training and others a combination of lipreading/speaking and sign. Some can hear quite a bit, others not so much. They also differ on whether they identify themselves as culturally Deaf (capital D) or hard of hearing. Often that depends on how much exposure they have had to Deaf culture and sign language.

  • And, I might add, there is also a great range among those people I know you are Deaf as well, in terms of how they communicate. Some prefer me to sign and speak at the same time, which is very hard for me to do, but I do that because that makes it easier to have a conversation!

  • @Banerika Oh I know :) I mentioned that in this video. I know b/c I have Hard of Hearing friends who sign and speak and they have no problem w/ that. I also have HOH friends who just don't sign at all and they speak and they're comfortable speaking w/o using ASL to communicate. So, I know that. Like I said, in the video there's so many range of Hard of Hearing people in this world. Some HOH rather not do both and speak instead. However, I get where you're coming from.

  • @sweetlikez, I know you know ... just thought some other people watching your video may not realize that what you are saying about HoH people also applies to Deaf people as well: that there is a great range of language and communication styles/educational backgrounds, regardless.

  • @Banerika true, true! :)

  • @Banerika that's true too!! At the end of the day, like you said, it "depends on how much exposure they have had to Deaf culture and sign language" yep!

  • I don't see what is so difficult to understand. I do know HH people who have told me they are deaf but I see hearing aids and I know you can aid hearing you don't have. It's just easier for them to say they are deaf. I say give hearing people some credit.

It could be, if a deaf person comes up to you and signs, it's because THEY are more comfortable with sign and they assume, because you are, at the time, among the deaf community that you sign. You are right, they should not assume.

  • @kerryoke68 Yeah and part of the reason why many HH say that they're deaf may be personal a reason. HH ppl have a whole range of hearing loss and depending on their hearing loss, they call themselves deaf. Or some HH ppl call themselves deaf b/c it's an easier term for them to use to tell ppl about their hearing loss identity. Nobody is not going to get what HH is, they say either I'm deaf instead, b/c it's a quicker and better term for ppl to understand.

  • I really like your videos :-)

  • @MsFrizzyHair thank you :)

  • I hadn't even thought of it that way. But you're right. You can't assume that because someone is HOH that they know sign language, or even that because some one is deaf that they know sign language. I've been known to assume such too.

So I'm sorry, on behalf of people like me, that assume that HOH know sign.

  • @Catwalksymphony thank you for watching and thanks for saying that. :)

  • @Catwalksymphony, I definitely envy those who are fluent in sign language. It's so cool to be fully bilingual like that (signing AND reading/writing English or whatever their country's native language is). Think of how incredible it is that people can cross cultures (Deaf culture is different from hearing culture) too, with that ability to sign fluently. It is one of my goals! It may take years of study, but it will definitely be worth it. It's awesome that sweetlikez is learning!

  • @Banerika I can tell you from my learning of another language that the work is worth it. It's an amazing experience to be able to be the person that allows others to cross those culture boundaries at times when it's needed. It's been amazing to learn about deaf culture, and not to mention I find the language beautiful. I've seen you on here, it seems we watch the same videos, and I wish you luck!

  • When i was 15 i got diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma. I lost my hearing from the chemo. i have 70% loss in my left ear and 90% in my right. i have to wear a hearing aid. It is difficult and frustrating to be able to understand simple conversations. I stayed in public school. My teachers and friends were so understanding. Thanks for posting this video. I am now 18 and in my freshman yr of college

  • Hey, I liked this video. I think all hoh people have experienced at least once weird reactions to you once they find out your hoh. I don't like to tell people (unless I really can't make them out or there my friend) cause of the reactions I have had in the pass. Some lady told this man I was hoh so when I went to speak to him and ask him if the book was good he looked at me, moved his lips but didn't make a noise and gave me the thumbs up and pointed to his book, hahaha crazy!!

  • Thank you for watching it. I know what you mean, when you get another reaction once folks find out you're HOH... because all that does it leads you to the pity-world. I get you completely. LMAO.. Thx for your comments.

  • I am hard of hearing and I have been since I was born. and I was premature when I was born, I weighted 1 pound, 6 ounces. I wear hearing aids and I love your video because it teaches other people about our life.

  • Thank you for saying that. I'm glad it helped you and I hope it helps the rest as well. :) Thanks for watching too.

  • Very good points made. I am hearing impaired and wear power hearing aids and I am also a musician of 20 years. I use sign language in difficult situations where its hard to understand speech and other times I dont sign and just try to understand others with my hearing aids. I also am visually impaired and have some remaining vision and I do not call myself blind, just low vision (20/1600). Its good to know sign language and braille foe times when my vision and hearing fail in situations.

    peace

  • i'm hard of hearing too:] but, I tell people that i'm 'deaf' because my friends don't understand. I shall have to tell them. :]

  • that's sooo true!! lol.. cuz ppl don't know what hard of hearing is... so it's easier to just say u're deaf. lmao.

  • i'm hard of hearing myself, and i've got to say u made a great point about the difference btwn hoh and deaf. so many people i meet nowadays who don't realize i'm hoh until they see my hearing aid just automatically assume, or ask if i sign. It's all in communication (face to face people).

  • Thank you soo much for watching and for seeing this. I'm glad you got what I meant. thanks :)

  • im hard of hearing myself, im fixing to make a video, i think its going to have to be a picture slideshow because my computer is a well a long story. lets be friends?

  • are u rly hard of hearing?

  • yes, i am I just showed you my hearing aids lol

  • noooo she bought 4000 dollar hearings to make a video.

  • shut the fuck up...

  • i was being sarcastic dude, that was a stupid question. so dont tell me to shut the fuck up.

  • no cuz i knew her and i saw she was watching vids of kids that are hard of hearing and i thought she was making a video to support the people of hard of hearing...sorry for my mistake

  • well im glad someone saw that i was being sarcastic.

  • @MsTwainSwift what you mean ''shut the fuck up'' ? you shut up, ass !!!!!

  • Yup, you are so right. Even with the signing community some HOH people will correct someone if they are called Deaf.

  • thank you. I'm glad somebody sees the situation.

  • I put how great your video was... also, what company made your hearing aids and have you always worn them made by this company, and whether there has been a time when you've not covered them with your hair, and what made you decide to do so now.

  • Hey! Thx 4 re-replying your post.

    To answer ur questions.

    (a) If you google Starkey Destiny hearing aids, that's where I got mines from. It's been about 3 yrs now. It's good.

    (b) Most of the time i do wear my hair up. Just only sometimes I wear my hair down, for no particular reasons, though. :)

  • Great idea, great job! :)

  • thanks for your comment & for watching! :)

  • You are amazing in everyway. You seem to have this certain light about you. I watched the videos and I swear to gosh, I smiled the whole way through, you are beautiful both inside and out and hope to watch some more of your videos. Please keep uploading!!!!

    Your good friend

    SpYkExBoI!!
