Watched a documentary today called the Dark Side of Chocolate. A must see opened my eyes to Nestle :( It looks at the amount of child trafficking that goes on in the ivory coast to harvest cocoa beans, 230 Euros to buy a child and ship them across the boarder! and the child is yours forever to work as a slave. Use to work for a Nestle' handheld foods division. Very pitiful sanitation standards, poor work conditions, and they diminished the quality of the product that the company they bought out created. Women can chose to breastfeed IN ADDITION to giving them formula. Babies drinking formula don't get somehow "hooked" and all of a sudden can't drink breast milk. If you want to blame someone for lack of breastfeeding, blame the do-gooders who went in and TOLD women not to breastfeed their babies because of the AIDS epidemic. Years later, they see that all sorts of other diseases kill babies who don't have the immune boost that breastfeeding gives.
@newguy33X Actually, everytime a baby is given formula instead of breastmilk, the mothers body responds by not making as much milk. It'a all supply and demand. The less the baby is demanding, the less milk the mothers body makes. So yeah, if the baby is given formula in the hospital and not sucking for milk, the mothers body reacts by not making milk. And it's not about getting hooked to formula, it's about being used to the artificial nipple, and yes, babies can refuse the mothers nipple.

@mondohartford The solution is to only use formula when absolutely necessary. If Nestle won't control themselves, the hospitals should do so, and should try to tell people about the dangers of bottle feeding before they decide what to do.
The point of the free formula is not to be generous, but rather so that babies are less able to suck, and mothers less capable of producing milk forcing them to continue using (and start buying) formula after leaving the hospital.

Have a search for 'Baby Milk Action' and find out why the very thing that you think is positive is actually increasing the mortality rates of infants in developing countries. I don't dispute that formula can be a good thing, and there are regulations in place, but nestle continues to violate these. this isn't the only thing they have done. Read outside the scandalous formula behaviour and see what else they have done...it's quite shocking and very upsetting to read. They have a complete disregard of humans and all for maximum profit.

I'm in a business ethic's class right now and this is a case study that we are doing a project on. What all happened from what we read was that they were giving it to mother's in hospitals and they were wearing all white which gave the illusion that they were nurses. Also, JenJuvenile is right, a big part of the problem was that the families couldn't afford it so they started to dilute the formula in order to stretch it out. Obviously the water was a big issue, but so were other aspects.
People can feel incredibly noble, fighting for such an emotive and important cause such as this, dying babies, doesn't get much worse than that, does it.
The problem is, they haven't got their facts right, what-so-ever.
Everybody needs a cause don't they; can get so hung up on being noble, that they hear only what they want to hear, staunchly refusing to give up on their cause, even if it means refusing the facts.
This was certainly very questionable, so I'm glad it was brought into question in the 70s.
But this does not happen today.
Babymilkaction are obsessed with this now, but seem to mix up their facts and refuse to actually listen to anything but their own ideas. This is clearly an extremely emotive and heart-wrenching claim, and it's easy to get anger watching this. But the fact is, Nestle does not behave like this. Go to Africa, you'll see.

Water is only part of the problem. Has it occured to you that, oh gee these families CAN'T AFFORD FORMULA!!? So they dilute. Which in turn starves their children. Plus, they aren't able to properly sanitize. Nestle as well as other companies, will donate some formula until their breastmilk supply has depleted. So then they have no choice but to buy formula. They also falsely advertise (like, formula will make your baby smarter). So no, this is not solely a water issue.

The point is that it is not logical or ethical for a company to market or donate formula to countries taht do not have the means to use it properly. Did you know that Nestle donated recalled formula in North America to African countries?
Sorry to say but babies DO die from formula. Around 14% of all formula is contaminated with salmonella and e.sakazakii. The latter has a fatality rate of 40-80%.

P.S. I will never give my children formula. How could I ever give them such a thing after knowing what it causes and it's disgusting ingredients (formaldehyde, hexane, mercury, MSG, COW'S MILK). So, I will think better of formula when I do have children? I don't think so. If anything I'll be filled with a deeper rage for formula companies. Me being a mom will not make formula more acceptable to me. So I don't know what you're trying to get at.
OH MY GOD! Not evereyone wants to breastfeed and believe it or not, not everyone CAN! The way nestle promotes their products in the 3rd world, where they do more harm than good, is obviously not right. But calling all formulas 'baby killer' is a little too much. The percentage of women who physically can't is small. Unfortunately the ingredients in formula leaves much to be desired... And yes, there are poisons in formula. I wish we had thriving milk banks so the women who truly can't breastfeed could use them instead of a subpar product like formula.

I'm not saying they don't exist or that they should feel bad for not being able to breastfeed. :).. I don't judge people for not breastfeeding. I know it's mostly down to people not being educated. I don't think anyone who researches formula would feed it to their child. But as a society we don't really research, we just accept what's in front of us. :(

nestle actually do not sell formula to mothers. they sell it to local healthcare professionals who sell it to mothers (along with providing health care advice on fromula for babies). how is this "aggressively marketing formula" and surely its the healthcare professionals who should shape up if they are hooking babies on formula in hospitals. whats stopping the hospitals from letting the mum breastfeed from the start?

Watched a documentary today called the Dark Side of Chocolate. A must see opened my eyes to Nestle :( It looks at the amount of child trafficking that goes on in the ivory coast to harvest cocoa beans, 230 Euros to buy a child and ship them across the boarder! and the child is yours forever to work as a slave. NESTLE buys their beans from there did not want to know anything about the doco or evidence in there. Other well known companies to SHAME ON U NESTLE BOYCOTT!!

Use to work for a Nestle' handheld foods division. Very pitiful sanitation standards, poor work conditions, and they diminished the quality of the product that the company they bought out created. I myself will not purchase products made by Nestle' or their subsidiaries. They make the very best by treating their workers like the very worst.

Women can chose to breastfeed IN ADDITION to giving them formula. Babies drinking formula don't get somehow "hooked" and all of a sudden can't drink breast milk. If you want to blame someone for lack of breastfeeding, blame the do-gooders who went in and TOLD women not to breastfeed their babies because of the AIDS epidemic. Years later, they see that all sorts of other diseases kill babies who don't have the immune boost that breastfeeding gives.

@newguy33X Actually, everytime a baby is given formula instead of breastmilk, the mothers body responds by not making as much milk. It'a all supply and demand. The less the baby is demanding, the less milk the mothers body makes. So yeah, if the baby is given formula in the hospital and not sucking for milk, the mothers body reacts by not making milk. And it's not about getting hooked to formula, it's about being used to the artificial nipple, and yes, babies can refuse the mothers nipple.

@mondohartford The solution is to only use formula when absolutely necessary. If Nestle won't control themselves, the hospitals should do so, and should try to tell people about the dangers of bottle feeding before they decide what to do.
The point of the free formula is not to be generous, but rather so that babies are less able to suck, and mothers less capable of producing milk forcing them to continue using (and start buying) formula after leaving the hospital.

Have a search for 'Baby Milk Action' and find out why the very thing that you think is positive is actually increasing the mortality rates of infants in developing countries. I don't dispute that formula can be a good thing, and there are regulations in place, but nestle continues to violate these. this isn't the only thing they have done. Read outside the scandalous formula behaviour and see what else they have done...it's quite shocking and very upsetting to read. They have a complete disregard of humans and all for maximum profit.

Its the fact that Nestle hard sell, and I mean HARD SELL to stop breast feeding and use their formula. Their sales reps dress up as nurses to help persuade the mothers to change.
The babies die because nearly all the water that is used to mix the formula is contaminated.
Their activities got so bad in the 70's and 80's that the WHO put an embargo on them.
Its the truth. Don't get me started on what the drug companies do!

I'm in a business ethic's class right now and this is a case study that we are doing a project on. What all happened from what we read was that they were giving it to mother's in hospitals and they were wearing all white which gave the illusion that they were nurses. Also, JenJuvenile is right, a big part of the problem was that the families couldn't afford it so they started to dilute the formula in order to stretch it out. Obviously the water was a big issue, but so were other aspects.

But this does not happen today.
Babymilkaction are obsessed with this now, but seem to mix up their facts and refuse to actually listen to anything but their own ideas. This is clearly an extremely emotive and heart-wrenching claim, and it's easy to get anger watching this. But the fact is, Nestle does not behave like this. Go to Africa, you'll see.

why do you think regulations for selling formula had to be brought in in the first place, because of nestle. other than that, read up on the other things nestle have done, fair enough, babymilkaction is a bit extreme, but other than formula they do other things that are very disagreeable. and as for people feeling "noble", don't be such a cynic, some people just care...

Water is only part of the problem. Has it occured to you that, oh gee these families CAN'T AFFORD FORMULA!!? So they dilute. Which in turn starves their children. Plus, they aren't able to properly sanitize. Nestle as well as other companies, will donate some formula until their breastmilk supply has depleted. So then they have no choice but to buy formula. They also falsely advertise (like, formula will make your baby smarter). So no, this is not solely a water issue.

The formula was introduced to HIV positive moms, since HIV is passed to a baby through breast milk! A fact you have somewhere left out.

The point is that it is not logical or ethical for a company to market or donate formula to countries taht do not have the means to use it properly. Did you know that Nestle donated recalled formula in North America to African countries?
Sorry to say but babies DO die from formula. Around 14% of all formula is contaminated with salmonella and e.sakazakii. The latter has a fatality rate of 40-80%.

P.S. I will never give my children formula. How could I ever give them such a thing after knowing what it causes and it's disgusting ingredients (formaldehyde, hexane, mercury, MSG, COW'S MILK). So, I will think better of formula when I do have children? I don't think so. If anything I'll be filled with a deeper rage for formula companies. Me being a mom will not make formula more acceptable to me. So I don't know what you're trying to get at.

OH MY GOD! Not evereyone wants to breastfeed and believe it or not, not everyone CAN! The way nestle promotes their products in the 3rd world, where they do more harm than good, is obviously not right. But calling all formulas 'baby killer' is a little too much. In the Western world, a child can thrive being bottle fed.

The percentage of women who physically can't is small. Unfortunately the ingredients in formula leaves much to be desired... And yes, there are poisons in formula. I wish we had thriving milk banks so the women who truly can't breastfeed could use them instead of a subpar product like formula.

I'm not saying they don't exist or that they should feel bad for not being able to breastfeed. :).. I don't judge people for not breastfeeding. I know it's mostly down to people not being educated. I don't think anyone who researches formula would feed it to their child. But as a society we don't really research, we just accept what's in front of us. :(

How can I give up HOT POCKETS®, JUICY JUICE®, DREYERS ice cream, TOLL HOUSE® cookies, STOUFFER'S® lasagna and coffee mate creamers?
Maybe you should put the same effort into getting a modern water well and sanitation system put into their villages.
The problem is they bath, drink, clean in the same water that poop and pee goes into.
Malnourished moms may produce little of no breast milk and need formula. Why not start a boil your formula's water campaign?

C'est triste de voir l'acharnement de certaines personnes contre une firme mondialement connue pour la qualité de ses produits qui nourrit des centaines de milliers d'enfants. Tout le monde sait que les formules pour bébés ne concurencent pas le lait maternel mais bien le lait de vache, trop riche en protéines et trop faible en fer pour un nourisson.Ces images chocantes me donnent une piètre idée de ceux qui les publient.
