  • so much better than Whip It nonsense

  • the best devo song... and a lot of fun top play.

  • Great piece of history!

  • Best song ever.

  • love this song since grade 7

  • I missed this tune back in the day. Heard it on the Life Aquatic soundtrack. Trust Wes Anderson to turn you on to at least one good song on each of his films!

  • My favourite Devo track. Superb !!!

  • Our Boys

  • the best version

  • Awesome!

  • 5:19

  • Oh shit... DEVO is... and always was... off the HINGES!!!

  • this is why Avril lavigne was never a punk

  • Something about the way you taste/Makes me wanna clear my throat. Sounds like my first girlfriend.

  • @LeeB9999 At least she swallowed

  • @SouthernCross33 Indeed. DEVO always had this slightly hidden sexual intent to their lyrics like 'little girls with the 4 red lips'. Good stuff.

  • @LeeB9999

    What about Pink Pussycat !!!!!!!!

  • @nickarch1

I'm not familiar with that one.

  • @LeeB9999

    'those boys ' !

If you have not heard it You have a treat in store !!!

This song was off the 2nd album and someone has made a trubute Video really cool !!

So thanks to you I got to check it out !!

    Ciao

  • Is that Thurston Moore playing air drums up front?

  • Thanks for uploading this! YOUTUBE - it works!

  • they kinda lost it at the end of gut feeling but wow the energy these guys had..almost too much for those unsuspecting NYC punkers! lol

  • Always sounds fresh and new to me, Love it!

  • Im 14 and love DEVO!!!

  • And now look at what music has de-evolved to...a bunch of guys screaming their own name for 3 minutes and no instruments.

  • wow... I was 13yo... awesome

  • I think Todd Rungren produced this song. Can anyone confirm?

  • @gapedhok Gut Feeling (From - Are Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!) was produced by Brian Eno.

  • @trangressions Thank you. I stand corrected.

  • @gapedhok no, it was Brian Eno. First record only.

  • @glomag at least they realized Eno was an opportunist. David Byrne fell in love with Eno and Talking Heads were fuct.

  • Just fucking listen to Jerry's proto-bass madness at the start. It's fucking beautiful.

  • This is spudriffic! Turn the volume all the way up on this one!

  • BRILLIANT!!! Thanks for putting this up!!!

  • I think it is funny that DEVO test-marketed their latest album while they made it. They had long forgotten how to be cool! LOL

  • How is DEVO not cool? Because they use synths? Because they wear glasses and matching outfits? So what! Nay-sayers only know them for Whip-It and think they're a joke...well listen to this early stuff, it's fantastic!

  • Maybe My favorite Devo song.

  • @fraink7

yeah, I saw them play it live in 1988 ("now it can be told" era) it was amazing, same stage moves!

  • I love that it get so noisy toward the end of Gut Feeling that someone in the audience visibly covers her ears (5:21).

  • the ONLY band that ever got close was the B52s and to this day both bands are STILL unique m50

  • absolute raw perfection

when they toured with all the treadmills robotic lights and newer costumes they still took the time to turn off the technology strip back to their original form and play this under plain lights.

    brought tears to the eyes

  • @dimmwitness my friend was at one of the treadmill concert, then we see ok go do it for a video in their own way. More cowbell nothing, more treadmill!

  • alain, you continue to amaze. merci beacoup!!!!!

  • They were such a tight band! I remember people saying to me, "How can you like that? They can't play their instruments!" I always wondered what the hell they were hearing, DEVO always sounded amazing to me!

  • Simply awesome! I'm at a loss for words. Waaaayy ahead of their time!

  • The guy who keeps on standing up in the audience seat must've been a big fan

  • Devo was the first concert I ever went to, Christchurch, New Zealand, 1980. When they sang "We are DEVO" it was the greatest thing ever. This old concert footage is musical perfection! Like Robert Capa's D-Day landing photos, their technical imperfection defines what we experience. DEVO defines my generation!

  • @acrabb Best first concert ever! Warms my heart

  • Wow , these guys are great, who are they ?

I'd go see them again !

They said they're from Wisconsin ?

Even though the guitar player always seems to unplug himself during the noise solo....

  • the drums at the beginning of Slap Your Mammy are so raw! excellent!

  • the shape of mark's glasses make him look like he's scowling

  • is that the wisky?

  • Is this song about Lebron? How in the hell did they know?

  • Changed my life!

  • Devo's playing tonight and I'm watching them on youtube since I missed my ride... I hate life.

  • @newbeachinvasion Damn dude that does suck!

  • Hey- why can't he just stand still @ 6:17? Too confusing...

  • @ArtsPatron2008

TOO CONFISTING???? YOU DONT FUCKING GET IT

  • @MrHuntry It's a joke, Blinky...

  • @ArtsPatron2008 ahahahaa i know!

  • It's definitely 1977. Not long before this, they weren't this kind of band with this line-up. I don't think Alan was in the band a whole year by this point.

  • the crummy black and white video makes it BETTER

  • Wow, great find - thanks!

  • Where is the LURV button???

  • Youtube must remove the dislike click on this video !

  • @alainfromfrance Best ... song .... ever.

  • @alainfromfrance Kind of gets my goat!

  • saw them at the wisky with darby and blondie 77

  • I do not care how much my kids laugh at me, DEVO will always be cool and I will always play it loud ! Spud forever.

  • @123strotz -----same here !!!!

  • @123strotz My kids don't laugh at me, we all watch DEVO together!

  • my 5 year old son loves DEVO! It's one of the only bands he knows the name of.

  • @123strotz damn right. you think i ever made fun of my dad cause he listened to jackie wilson and frankie lymon?? whatever the generation, dudes are dudes.

  • @123strotz Heh....music these days, and yer kids laugh at you?! Lol!!

    Laugh back.

  • @123strotz I am 21 and love Devo!

  • @123strotz You're joking, my kids think my musical taste is wild, if anyone laughs at anyone in my house at ppl's musical taste it's me at them. The kids today are such square heads, lady gag gag etc lol

  • why do punk rock fans trollthe pages of DEVO one of the progressive punk bands of old...?

  • Great song Love it! LOVE DEVO. let's go for the DEVOLUTION!!!

  • This is so punk rock.

  • sure can't be 1972...Alan Myers was not recruited as a drummer before 1976, and you can see him clearly in the video ..

  • Epic intro

  • 1977, what a year - Elvis died, Led Zeppelin played their last U.S concert, and

The Cars sign a contract with Elektra Records

Devo signs a contract with Warner Bros.

The Police sign a contract with A&M Records

Van Halen signs a contract with Warner Bros.

The B-52's make their debut at a party in Athens, Georgia

... and I got out of high school!

  • @cmurphy999 the year that punk broke!

  • @cmurphy999 ~ ....And that was just in America! England was exploding in '77! A great year, indeed!

  • LOL 5:04 Bob 1 spins a dervish and unplugs his [coiled] cord, has to plug it back in, and unroll himself! Spectacular!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song makes me wanna go skate so badly. The part when Mark drops to his knees when during the song transition is so rad. Such an incredible stage presence from the start.

  • This is so rockin, I wish this song got more credit. 16,788 views, 112 likes and 0 dislikes. Thats pretty damn good though.

  • @kamikazeekemler er,..one person doesn't like it-must be a 'disco' fan..

    love fom a spud-boy

  • thank you sir who found this great footage and put it up,

  • .......Yeah......something 'bout the way you taste, makes me wanna clear my throat.....

    DEVO are Gods!!!!!!!!!

  • I could only imagine what these people in the audience were thinking when they heard songs like these, and the performance to back it up. I wish there was more music like this today.

  • 77 is much for likely that 72. I can't say for sure 77, but not 72.

  • It is unlikely that they would be playing this classic Devo song a full year before they even formed as a group. Clever as they are, I am not sure time travel was one they had perfected by this time. All that aside, I am going to insist that this was made in 1953, altho it was in fact much closer to 1959 when the Russians had sputnik in orbit, No doubt about it from the mics they are using and the guitars were not available before 1953. I did not see any new cars in the clip either.

  • One of my DEVO favorites...

If you have the original analogue tapes, this footage would really benefit from timebase correction.

  • @unseenwires, naw dude, I just listened to some P&P vids here on youtube, and they're just run of the mill indie ho hum, with current trendy style of beards of the young set. No where near a match of the excellent trailblazing of the late 70's to early 80's.

  • @RockSalami: You can't have listened to them properly, or you're just not on the wavelength. It's not indie, they're all in their mid to late 30's and far from young trendies and I didn't put them in competition with Devo - music isn't a competition! I just thought in these dried up days of music, people might like to listen to something honest and different, that hasn't been written to make money. Sorry I fucking spoke!

  • had just about all i can take ...i cant take it no more... superb !!

  • I love the autistic pacing! awesome shyt!

  • Comment removed

  • Woah! Those are some crazy moves when moving into Slap Yer Mammy!

And is it just me or was SYM a tad slower?

  • see kids? that's called BAND.....

  • love the fuckin' bass......

  • @mcul2112 - There stuff was so much better when they used a real bass. They eventually switched to almost exclusively synth bass because they thought it sounded better... but it didn't!

  • Hmm, the last minute or so sounds like the Misfits' "20 Eyes",,,wonder if Glenn was listening to Devo at all when he formed the Misfits?

  • This is without doubt the best version of this I have ever heard...

  • The world needed Devo.

  • This is my work out tape I play it over and over. It helps me lose weight through vomiting and seizures. By the fifth playing your quantum strings are vibrating fast enough so you're no longer to be in contact with our puny dimensions. I do have abs of steel though I don’t know how that happened really? A man is real not made of steel.

  • more old right not 77 good judge spenders

  • Music history! Thanks for the upload, Alain. ♫♫♫

  • nice alain!

  • What beauty there is in the world.

  • was this at Max's?

  • @jazztrancer July 8, 1977 at Max's Kansas City.

  • i got a gut feeling this may be the best ever

  • These July '77 videos are great, I love how slow some of the songs are compared to how they ended up on the first two albums.

  • @punkaktion : first videos of Devo are from 1977, only one or two little things before this year, but no "gut feeling" before 1977 , I was not there , but I'm sure !

  • @alainfromfrance you are right. I dont think devo was a thing in 1972. plus most songs are played 1 year before the album

  • @punkaktion a year before the band formed? Man I know that enlightened ignorance is a tenet of the punk mindset, but you can't forget about the ENLIGHTENED part.

  • @punkaktion it's not even possible to have that many short-haired people in 72, especially in the US ;D

  • @punkaktion Looks like 74 to me

  • @punkaktion devo wasen't even arround in '72

  • Mark's dance at 6:20 is HUGE. The ultimate white-guy weirdo dance!

  • BEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN. the poor video quality looks cool as shit. Devo at their best. True visionaries.

  • wow this rocks!

  • thnks! for lifetime!!!

  • Slap your Mammy!!! we're all DEVO!

  • very good

  • Fantastic stuff, I loved this so much - I watched it 3 times back to back. Thanks Alain!!

  • Fantastic stuff, I loved this so much - I watched it 3 times back to back. Thanks Alain!!

  • Yet more proof that Alan was as integral a part of Devo as any.

  • @stapler942

One of the best rock drummers in history.

  • @Toestubber not to mention the whole band. vocals are killer. everything.

  • man i\d love every gut feeling to have an intro like this

  • formidable Mr. france

  • man, you see footage this raw, it's like...
