I missed this tune back in the day. Heard it on the Life Aquatic soundtrack. Trust Wes Anderson to turn you on to at least one good song on each of his films!
How is DEVO not cool? Because they use synths? Because they wear glasses and matching outfits? So what! Nay-sayers only know them for Whip-It and think they're a joke...well listen to this early stuff, it's fantastic!
……. "Slap your mammy on, slap your mammy on the goat!" … I … was … THERE! … This is the long defunct but still revered Max's Kansas City … Beautiful Mutants Unite! … Happy to see that they're still goin' strong ~ (•8-D
when they toured with all the treadmills robotic lights and newer costumes they still took the time to turn off the technology strip back to their original form and play this under plain lights.
@dimmwitness my friend was at one of the treadmill concert, then we see ok go do it for a video in their own way. More cowbell nothing, more treadmill!
They were such a tight band! I remember people saying to me, "How can you like that? They can't play their instruments!" I always wondered what the hell they were hearing, DEVO always sounded amazing to me!
Devo was the first concert I ever went to, Christchurch, New Zealand, 1980. When they sang "We are DEVO" it was the greatest thing ever. This old concert footage is musical perfection! Like Robert Capa's D-Day landing photos, their technical imperfection defines what we experience. DEVO defines my generation!
It's definitely 1977. Not long before this, they weren't this kind of band with this line-up. I don't think Alan was in the band a whole year by this point.
@123strotz damn right. you think i ever made fun of my dad cause he listened to jackie wilson and frankie lymon?? whatever the generation, dudes are dudes.
@123strotz You're joking, my kids think my musical taste is wild, if anyone laughs at anyone in my house at ppl's musical taste it's me at them. The kids today are such square heads, lady gag gag etc lol
This song makes me wanna go skate so badly. The part when Mark drops to his knees when during the song transition is so rad. Such an incredible stage presence from the start.
I could only imagine what these people in the audience were thinking when they heard songs like these, and the performance to back it up. I wish there was more music like this today.
It is unlikely that they would be playing this classic Devo song a full year before they even formed as a group. Clever as they are, I am not sure time travel was one they had perfected by this time. All that aside, I am going to insist that this was made in 1953, altho it was in fact much closer to 1959 when the Russians had sputnik in orbit, No doubt about it from the mics they are using and the guitars were not available before 1953. I did not see any new cars in the clip either.
I know it's naughty to do this but SERIOUSLY!!! Check out Plush & Plastix on myspace, soundcloud and on dannyofthedead's youtube channel. They're about as experimental as you could possibly get in an era where everything has already been done. @unseenwires, naw dude, I just listened to some P&P vids here on youtube, and they're just run of the mill indie ho hum, with current trendy style of beards of the young set. No where near a match of the excellent trailblazing of the late 70's to early 80's.
@RockSalami: You can't have listened to them properly, or you're just not on the wavelength. It's not indie, they're all in their mid to late 30's and far from young trendies and I didn't put them in competition with Devo - music isn't a competition! I just thought in these dried up days of music, people might like to listen to something honest and different, that hasn't been written to make money. Sorry I fucking spoke!
@mcul2112 - There stuff was so much better when they used a real bass. They eventually switched to almost exclusively synth bass because they thought it sounded better... but it didn't!
