  • hey man your records were among my favourites with Virgil Fox and Tomita back when i was in high school. so very nice to see that you have a u-toob account and use it.

  • I have been trying to teach myself this wonderful piece of music by Bach for over a year, but it is very difficult, but I shall continue practicing and maybe someday it will sound like this amazing rendition, which is perfect in my eyes.

  • Not the best of performances...to say the least!.

  • I like the exuberance oi the performance! Great acoustical environment to complement.

  • awesome preform :)

my teacher promissed that she will give this prelude and fugue to me to play and I hope that I will be able to play it at least as half as good as you play it. :D

  • where can i buy the cd! wonderful.....

    thank you for posting.

    fred

  • This is great!, I want to learn this piece

  • I have not heard a better interpretation than this. Brilliant! I enjoyed it immensely.

  • Very interesting interpretation. Thats what I love about Baroque in general, there is no one correct way to play Bach's music.

  • Vibrant performance on a beautiful instrument. Bravo, sir!

  • Actually, this is a perfect composition. However, the timbre of harpsichord is too dry. A bit noisy. I prefer to use piano instead because it can clearly show the voice parts.

  • Truly amazing :O

  • AWESOME!

  • This is so cool! I love the harpsichord sounds! Where do you even get a harpsichord??:/

  • Themes well delineated despite what I would presume a slower responding instrument than the modern piano. Really enoyed it.

  • oh my god, how much for a fucking harpsichord? That's one of the most badass things i've ever seen in a house. It's like a pimp awesome thing you never see on MTV cribs, because money can't buy sophistication.

  • hmm sounds noisy to mee, i think i prefer the traditional piano :)

  • @karenandian1

The pianoforte was invented after the harpsichord ;)

  • I've not heard this fugue with the coupling used here... I think I like it, but I'm not sure.

  • @mmtrebuchet coupling makes the sound more thick, 2 sets of strings sounds better than 1, its the 3 foot that adds the octave, you dont hear that untill the fugue, so that makes 3 sets of strings, .. they are used for contrast

  • If anyone wants to hear just the fugue, FF to 1:47.

  • His CD of Domenico Scarlatti is absolutely incredible. Don't waste your time hearing anybody else play it but Newman. Just real real powerful and strong stuff!!!! Anthony, I see you're reading the comments. Just let me say I think you are awesome.

  • I've been a fan of Anthony Newman since the 80's since I heard his performance of the goldberg variations on the radio. After it was over I had to find out who the performer was. I like real "hot and heavy" playing of Bach.

  • OMRLPdedicate, you are mistaking your own preferences for objective truth. People like to listen to Bach played on the harpsichord for historical reasons (Bach didn't have modern grand pianos), or because they just like the sound of the harpsichord (even if you don't). Bach instructed the player which keyboard to use for loud and soft passages (try that on a piano; they do dynamics differently).

The sound would have been better if the microphone were closer to the instrument.

  • Why do some people still play Bach on the harpsichord? The piano is superior in every respect. This sounds dull and unimaginative; compare Angela Hewitt's recordings on the piano.

  • Superb as always. I saw you give a J.S. Bach organ recital at Stonybrook, Long Island, NY back in 1987. It's concert I'll never forget; it made a deep, deep impression upon me. People were weeping in the audience during the great Passacaglia and Fugue.

  • Many many thanks for your comment. Where are u?

  • You do such a great job playng Anthony!!!

  • Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed the cadenza in the fugue. Very well played.

  • Bravo, Maestro!

  • Wow, you play extremely well, and that is an excellent instrument.

  • Bravo Mr Newman

This shows that Bach music must be played with the heart, slowing here and there.

    Thanks Mr Newman

  • Great performance! What sort of harpsichord is this? Looks like it was built in the German style.
